Microdermabrasion
A technique using sand crystals and a vacuum to remove superficial skin cells and improve minor skin imperfections
Question: microdermabrasion? I saw on an answer someone suggested a at home microdermabrasion. I was a natural one using Honey and Baking soda. Does anyone know how much to use of each? It listed SunflowerNaturals as a reference but I can't find it on that site.
Answer: can't get you the direct answer to that, but I can suggest the following:
1. after a ling hot shower or bath, when your skin is relaxed, clean and humid, you can take a mixture of honey with corn flour (prepared about an hour or half hour before, with the proportion of 1:1) and gently massage your skin. The effect is amazing, as the flour is performing microdermabrasion, while honey gives the skin the needed vitamins. This can be applied for the whole body. The best application is during or immediately after sauna.
2. if you're looking to whiten your skin - you can add fresh lemon juice - not too much, about 1/3 of a tea spoon at 1 spoon of Honey.
3. there is Neutrogena Microdermabrasion Pads - I would recommend them, if you don't like to get Honey dirty :)
Question: MicroDermabrasion.....? I'm treating my face acne and I'm already using some creams recommended by doctor and I'm thinking to try microdermabrasion as there are still a few spots/signs on the side of my eyes.
I've read Youthful Essence is one of the best kits and can use it several times for the same price as one visit to salon. I'm wondering if I visit a beauty salon I would get a better treatment ?!
Answer: Youthful essence is a cheap product. Do not buy it. Its not even close to microdermabrasion. Its more like exfoliation. You can get similar results using St Ives Apricot Scrub as you can with Youthful Essence.
Real microdermabrasion at a doctor's office involves using microscopic crystals to gently brush over your skin removing dead skin cells and stimulating collagen. You need 8 - 10 treatments before you see significant results. This works for acne, and hyperpigmentation but not for deep acne scars or melasma.

Question: What is a good home microdermabrasion product? I have heard really good things about microdermabrasion, but I cannot afford to go to a spa to have it done. Has anyone tried a home microdermabrasion product that they have liked?
Answer: I have been using at home microderma kits for about two years now... But you should know that the professional treatment is more effective than at home kits.
i understand you dont have the money... you have to find the right home kit. best products come from Neutrogena, Susan Lucci, dermanew and L'oreal, but there are hundreds of others that might work on you. my advice is to try and obtain some free samples online or from gift bags and try them on your face and than decide what to buy, because many kits may work on others but to you may cause irritations and breakouts.
hope this helps.
Question: Do home microdermabrasion kits really work and what is the best one? Do home microdermabrasion kits really work and what is the best one?
Answer: I have the Neutrogena one and it seems to be doing good. I think you could get faster/better results at a salon/plastic surgeon/whatever...but for $30 bucks I figured the Neutrogena one was worth a try.
Question: How good are microdermabrasion and photofacials? I am 42 years old and have been recommended microdermabrasion followed by photofacials (5 sittings each, 1 month apart) to remove pigmentation and rejeuvenate the skin. But the treatment costs a pretty packet and I want to know if its really effective. If yes, for how long? Are there any home remedies for pigmented patches? I live in a tropical region.
PS I have a normal to dry skin (in winters) and have never had a problem with acne at all.
Answer: I am male, close to your age, and live in a humid, semi-tropical climate (US Gulf Coast). I get microderms on a fairly regular basis; I love how smooth it makes my skin, and it also helps calm the redness of my mild rosacea. I can also tell it has help some old acne scars and it really helped to get rid of some stubborn blackheads (yuck).
Is that 1 month between treatments, or 1 month for all 5? If the latter, that sounds a bit rushed to me.
Not too sure about the photofacial, but if that's the same as IPL, you certainly want to spread it out some, as mine (for broken blood vessels, a common side-effect of rosacea) tends to be somewhat uncomfortable. In fact, before they got a different machine, it was downright painful, but perhaps for your application, they would tone it down a few notches...
I suspect that the photofacial does use IPL, so that is probably where the big expense is coming from. I think I would try two microderms only (no IPL) about 3 weeks apart and see how that does. In my area, one microderm runs about $65...
Good luck.
Question: how many sessions of microdermabrasion will work mild acne scarring? I'm 19 years old and I'm planning to go through microdermabrasion. Will I see results with 5 sessions? or will it take 10 sessions though? I have mild acne and acne scarring, oil skin and red spots due to acne.
Answer: This usually depends on the product you are using for microdermabrasion. I had experienced good results for my acne scars with just 3 sessions of Zenmed's renewing microdermabrasion complex.
In fact as you say, that you have mild acne, acne scarring, oily skin and red spots due to acne, then why do you want to have microdermabrasion sessions. These sessions at a spa are expensive and would only give you relief from scarring and your oily skin problem.
I would suggest you use Zenmed's derma cleanse acne system. It is a powerful system comprising of products that helps in getting rid of acne from its roots, stop its early re-occurrence, minimize the scarring and redness, unclog pores and provide a clean, clear and smooth skin. This would cost you just one-fourth of what you would end up paying at a spa and also save you alot of time. I would advise you to go for this stuff for a permanent solution to your skin problems.
I would also offer you to use my discount code "zen4less" to avail a price off, in case if you make up your mind to buy this product.
Question: How much does real medical microdermabrasion help to reduce enlarged pores? What about microdermabrasion combined with an acid peel? How much of a change in my pores could I expect after one treatment? How much pain or "down time" is there after treatment? Have any of you gotten this done for enlarged pores and had good results? (remember, at home mdb is not the same thing) Thanks :)
Answer: I've had this done before professionaly ( a series of treatments) and it is so worth it. It does help a lot to minimize the size of your pores but what it really does is takes off the first layer of your skin so your face wash will penetrate deeper in your pores. An acid peel will burn a bit after if you use it. Oh and it isn't very painful. the person doing it has different levels they can put the machine on depending on the sensitivity of your skin. Just make sure you ask them for a sunscreen that wont clog your pores to use after the treatment because your face will be more prone to sunburn. Hope that helped!
Question: What is the difference between physical scrubbing and microdermabrasion? I mean...really, you're still scrubbing..right? So why is microdermabrasion better? And also, say you have thicker skin, wouldn't you be better off with physical scrubbing? As in with a loufa or something?
Answer: microdermabration is more of an exact science, while scrubbing is just sloughing off dead skin and i=making it red, microdermabration get more into the pores to help clean them out. although i do admit that advertising for skin products uses the term way to loosly, because i find the products dont always do microdermabration (but thats advertising for you)
Question: What are 10 important things to know about microdermabrasion? i am doing a report on the 10 things people should know about microdermabrasion.
Answer: As I don't want to plagerize, I will just list the site where I have found much important information on Microdermabrasion.
http://cosmeticdermatologist.riopellemdmedispa.com/Microdermabrasion.html
Just look through the site. At the bottom of the page I have listed there are big black headings, look under those and you'll find way more than 10 things you should know.
Question: How much is microdermabrasion and does it work? which is better? to buy your own microdermabrasion kit or go to dermatoligist and have it done?
Answer: Hi there,
Professional microderma (in a doctor's office or in a beauty salon) is definitely more effective than using an at home kit, because the device used by a professional is more precise and had a greater exfoliation powers. I have tried them both and my results were definitely better after professional microderma. It is also more expensive, a session varies between $80 and $200, but it's well worth the money. At home kits are alot cheaper ($10-100), some work, others don't.
If you have the money, try the professional type. After 6-8 sessions. you will have good results.
Hope this help.
Question: Is it ok Microdermabrasion and facial waxing on the same day? I am planning a spa day and I need to know if I can I get Microdermabrasion plus mini facial and get my face waxed on the same day?
Answer: I would wait at least 24 hours between the 2 procedures, because both can irritate your skin. You could end up with a really red, raw, blotchy face if you do both on the same day. Give your skin time to heal between proedures definitely.
Question: Is there any way to do a home microdermabrasion or skin-peeling without visiting a dermatologist? I have a few acne-scars on my back and have read that microdermabrasion (resurfacing the skin) or chemical skin-peeling are both popular ways to remove the outer layer of skin / get rid of the scars. Are there any "home" kits for performing this or alternative ways of performing it without a visit to a dermatologist? The closest one to me is about 2 hours away.
Answer: I've recently tried Neutrogena's VisblyEven Skin Polishing Enzyme Treatment. And I like it.
This product will save you Time and Money; AND it's safe for use on Darker skin tones and on Sensitive Skin.
1 Tube ($12) will literally provide head-to-toe exfoliation. That's a bargain! The enzymes work to dissolve dead skin.
I have used it twice head-to-toe-to-back-to-fingertips(including the underarms). That's a mani-pedi, a facial, a back treatment and "specialty area" twice for about $25.00 total. Total time for both treatments:30-40 minutes total.
My routine: Shower, paint/slather thin coating onto, damp skin, wait 10 minutes, rub off of dry areas, then shower and use a buff puff to remove the rest. Cleanse and moisturize skin as usual. I recommend following up with a SheaButter moisturizer for the body afterwords.
Enzyme peels are the only peels I use as a professional, this is great over-the-counter product.
"Enzyme products work entirely on the surface of the skin to exfoliate, and do not penetrate a couple of layers of skin like the Glycolic Acid does.
Fruit Enzyme Products can accomplish the following:
Exfoliates dead skin cells
Stimulates new cell growth and new collagen
Improves skin tone and texture
Improves the appearance of fine lines and crepiness
Improve blotchiness and pigmentation irregularities
Safe for any skin type, including sensitive skin
Question: What are the best microdermabrasion kits? I have had 6 done professionally and I enjoyed the results, but they are very expensive. If I could afford it, I would continue to go to the dermatologist for touch up procedures. I am looking for opinions on home microdermabrasion kits you can pick up in stores. Any info would be great! Thanks!

Question: What exactly is a microdermabrasion treatment? Im 20, and I have this coupon for a skin care place for a free 15 minute microdermabrasion.. what exactly does the microderm. do?
Answer: Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a cosmetic procedure popular in day spas, doctors' practices, and medical spas in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. Different methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals, fine organic particles, or a roughened surface. Particles are removed off through the wand/handpiece through which the abrasive particles come [1] The term dermabrasion itself refers to the more severe medical procedure carried out under general or light anesthesia.
Microdermabrasion is used to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. The procedure is not very painful and requires no anaesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. There is very little, if any, evidence that microdermabrasion stimulates collagen formation. Microdermabrasion can also be used for treatment of acne, but must be repeated periodically to be effective. Microdermabrasion should not be used on patients who have taken the medication Accutane (Isotretinion) in the previous twelve months.
In the past, microdermabrasion was carried out using abrasive crystals. However, in the last decade, it has become more common to use a wand with a roughened surface. This procedure requires no medical oversight and is commonly used in conjunction with facial spa treatments. These days there are a multiplicity of machines available for microdermabrasion.
The growth of the microdermabrasion treatment industry has led to innovations and there are currently a few different microdermabrasion systems available. In terms of professional microdermabrasion systems there are two choices:
1. Crystal microdermabrasion Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the traditional treatment of choice and rely on tiny crystals that are blasted onto the skin to perform the exfoliating process. Although the crystal microdermabrasion system is still widely used, the introduction of alternatives has led to a trend away from this treatment system.
2. Diamond microdermabrasion Diamond microdermabrasion systems operate without the need for crystals. The exfoliation process occurs when a diamond tipped head makes contact with the skin and abrades against it. In both crystals and diamond microdermabrasion systems the dead skin cells are sucked away from the face.
3. Home Microdermabrasion Home microdermabrasion systems are an increasingly popular alternative to professional treatments. These are cheap and very easy to perform, and although not as powerful as professional systems, can produce good results over time. There is a great deal of competition in the home microdermabrasion systems market with most of the big cosmetics and skin care brands launching their own home systems.
Microdermabrasion is a procedure where tiny particles "sand" or "polish" the skin and gradually remove scarred or discolored epidermal tissue. When you use a home microdermbrasion system the surface skin cell turnover will be enhanced and the skin will be visibly fresher. Home microdermabrasion creams with active ingredients, are focused on skin renewal and accelerate rebuilding of healthy collagen skin cells after microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing or harsh peels. For depressed scars, such as pitted acne scars, subcision with needles is often used by estheticians to break up the deeply buried scar tissue, and a home microdermabrision system then speeds up new healthy skin remodeling: the orderly process of laying out new collagen and elastin fibers.
Question: Is one session of Microdermabrasion going to be effective or do I need to go more then once? I am turning 42 on Saturday and bought a package through a local spa. The 1st treatment is Microdermabrasion. I am just wondering if one treatment will be effective.
Answer: one treatment should show an improvement, but any skin care regimen will need maintenance for lasting results..
advance happy bday! :-)
Question: how well do microdermabrasion at home kits work? i have some scars from acne and was wondering how well the at home microdermabrasion kits work. i was particualrly wondering if they work well on removing acne scars, most of the kits i've looked at dont say they do but the articles i've read on microdermabrasion say that it does. i was considering the neutrogena or avon kits. i'd really appreciate your feedback, thanks.
Answer: I find them good in the sense that they are rather like an effective facial scrub but they wont help with acen scarring- you would need a course of professional microdermabrasion facials for it to start to hav an effect on scarring. Worth it though- make the skin feel wonderfully clean and fresh
Question: Where can I get a microdermabrasion cloth? I'm plagued with stretch marks on my thighs, and want to try the cloths out. I don't want to get a microdermabrasion cloth off of ebay or any other internet site, so does anyone know of an actual store that sells these cloths? If not, is there a substitute that I can use that will do the same job? I'm looking for something that will remove the top skin layers gradually until I see improvement. Thanks!
Thanks for all the answers guys. And
nltinstl, I didn't make the term up if you thought I was referring to "microdermabrasion" incorrectly - there are many vendors that are selling these "microdermabrasion cloth" items online, and that is what they call them.
But thanks for your help. I bought some Mederma yesterday.
Thanks everyone for your help!
Answer: The problem is the stretchmarks are a tear in the skin and go further then the first layer. You cannot get rid of them with microderm abrasion, they're too deep. You need to cream them and its right, Dr. RX and other creams available in the drug store are actually working ok. Palmer has cream out for stretch marks and Nuvectin (not the right spelling, I think) also works fine, they even tried it with scars but its expensive.
Question: Whats the difference between a microdermabrasion scrub and a regular one? Why are the microdermabrasion scrub so expensive compare to regular ones?
Answer: unlike regular scrubs, microderma creams contain micro crystals that gently abrade the skin due to their irregular surfaces. these crystals are a bit more expensive, that's why the final product is also more expensive than regular scrubs.
the good part is that microderma scrubs usually work better than regular scrubs, so if you are interested, give it a try, i'd say it's well worth it.
Question: How Long Does It Take To See Results After Getting a Microdermabrasion? After one Microdermabrasion do you see results? Do you see reults right after you get it done or overnight? Please answer!
Answer: These links might answer all of your questions.
Question: Does microdermabrasion treat current acne and what is the cost? I have some deep pimples that have resurfaced several times and I never seem to be able to remove them completely. I also have red marks from old acne. Does microdermabrasion remove blackheads and whiteheads and pustules? What is the price? I am referring to the treatments they do in spas. Please no answers recommending other things like rubbing fruit on your face...
Answer: I have microderm instead of normal facials. I use good products and put a mask on once a week so I don't need a facial to do those simple things. That's why I have microderm instead. It is a great deep cleanse that you cannot do yourself at home properly.
For acne like you are talking about, I would try IPL or VPL - the variable pulse light treatments. Make sure you go to a reputable salon and discuss it with them before you even think about doing it.
It is expensive and by god it hurts - but the results are absolutely fantastic. This is what celebs have done weeks before a big event and why their skin glows.
