Mastoid
The bone behind the ear that carries much of the stress of lifting sutures in face and neck lifts
Question: what is the bluish color in the mastoid process? Identify the particular sign when there is bluish color in the mastoid process. What is it?
Answer: The mastoid process is a conical prominence projecting from the undersurface of the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. It is located just behind the external acoustic meatus, and lateral to the styloid process. Its size and form vary somewhat; it is larger in the male than in the female.
This process serves for the attachment of the Digastric, Sternocleidomastoid, Splenius capitis, and Longissimus capitis muscles.
The word is derived from the Greek 'masto-', alluding to its resemblance to the breast.
Question: What type of tissue makes up the mastoid process? What type of tissue is found in the mastoid process?
Answer: Osseous tissue (cortical and spongy bone) and marrow in the lower part of the mastoid air cells
Question: My ear infection has worsened and my mastoid is so sore? I gave the mastoid area near one of my infected ears a scratch this morning and it stung like a bee sting. Hours later I'm getting a sick stomach and headache. Is this normal for an ear infection? Am I just being a sook? I'm on day three of oral and in-ear antibiotics but get worse every day.
Thanks Tammah, I'll see him again Monday if he can squeeze me in.
Answer: Please go to the doctor. I had mastoiditis a few months ago and the pain was excruciating. There was an abcess inside the bone that had spread from an ear infection. I also took antibiotics for the ear infection, but for some reason they didn't work. I ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics and painkillers for 5 days. Not something to mess with
Question: Can anyone suggest a holistic or naturopathic treatment or remedy for a longstanding mastoid infection? In particular I am intersested in treatments utilizing homeopathy, neti pot, colloidal silver, hydrogen peroxide, herbs, essential oils, sinus irrigation, chiropractic, or other non-invasive procedures, plus any feedback from people who have had surgery for mastoid infections...also I'm interested in funding the causative factors for mastoid infections.
Answer: Homeopathic Treatment for Mastoid :-
NUX VOMICA in 1M potency one dose every week. HEKLA LAVA(Hecla Lava) and SULFUR in 30 three times a day half an hour before meals.
This is a tried tested and well verified prescription. Surgery will not cure it as far as I know because have treated and cured many after their surgery failed with exactly these remedies with 100% results.
Avoid Chocolates, Mints, Coffee, Red Meat, Alcoholic and Carbonated drinks, Spicy Rich Food while taking any Homeopathic remedies, and keep the medicines away from direct sunlight, heat strong smells and perfumes and do not store them in the fridge.
Curing without any side effects or Complications Thats the Beauty of Homeopathic Medicine .
Take Care and God Bless you !
Question: I have Diabetic Mastoid what kind of medicine can be used other than Insulin? I have been on Insulin for more than 30 yrs and I have Diabetic Mastpathy. So what other kind of medicine I can use for my diebetes
Answer: Your mastoid is not due to insulin use, it's believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction to hyperglycemia. There is no substitute for insulin, it is a necessary hormone you need to stay alive. Oral meds only work if you still produce adequate insulin, and if you've been on insulin for 30 years I highly doubt you produce much anymore, if any. Maybe this article will help. At least it's a benign condition.

Question: What are the reasons for mastoid bone pneumatization?
Answer: The pneumatization of 141 "normal" temporal bones on computed tomography (CT) was evaluated in 100 patients (age range, 6-85 years). Because of the controversy surrounding the sclerotic squamomastoid (mastoid), temporal bones with this finding were discarded. A CT index of pneumatization was based on the pneumatized area and the number of cells seen within a representative scanning section. Results suggest that squamomastoid pneumatization follows the classic normal distribution and does not correlate with age, gender, or laterality. A high degree of symmetry was found in 41 patients who had both ears examined. In 35% of all temporal bones, the petrous apex was pneumatized, concordant with the findings of other investigators. Pneumatization extending into other regions of the temporal bone corresponded linearly with squamomastoid pneumatization. Air-cell configuration was variable. Air-cell size tended to increase progressively from the mastoid antrum. The scutum "pseudotumor" appearance caused by incomplete pneumatization was seen frequently, and should not be mistaken for mastoiditis or an osteoma. Thick sections producing partial-volume effect may also produce this spurious finding. Therefore, when searching for mucosal thickening due to mastoiditis, large air cells should preferably be analyzed.
Question: what is the cause of a mastoid? sometimes i get a mastoid when iam stressed or run down, why? it seems to be a recurring problem. no i dont want to keep going to the docs, anyone a nurse that can give me info on this annoying and yucky condition?
Answer: I am not sure what you mean by you get a mastoid, could you further describe your problem.
You can get mastoiditis an inflammation of the mastoid process, behind your ear.
Let me know a little more and I might be able to help.
Question: A person canot hear vibrations of a fork, but can hear it if its kept on his mastoid antrum , this indicates? Please explain your answer. The cause of the problem.
Answer: This shows that the persons ossicular conduction and air conduction are at fault and that bone conduction is good. The vibrations are transmitted through the bones of the skullto the fluid of the inner ear
Question: How do I make my Sterno Cleido Mastoid (neck muscles) bigger?

Question: Has anyone on here had 'inflammation of the mastoid bone'? I had an MRI recently and I am told I have inflamation of the mastoid bone (which is behind the ear next to the Brain) I now have to have a CT. I know from reading that this is mostly caused by an untreated ear infection which spreads into the head (this doesn't apply to me as my ears are fine) I wondered if any user on here has had the same and can share their experience?
No dumb answers please - there can be serious causes of this so I don't need any stupid answers!
Answer: Actually, the mastoid bone is not solid bone. It is a kind of sinus, filled with air pockets, just like the sinuses behind your facial bones.

An infection in the mastoids can be serious because they are so close to the brain. Keep up with your doctor on how he wants to treat it. With a little luck, you may be able to handle it with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
Question: Mastoid tumors that become Acoustic Neuromas? Have you ever heard of a mastoid tumor that becomes a acoutic neuroma and after surgery of removing all the mastoid air cells and most of the bone behind the ear, after 2yrs the thing where only 10% was left now has grown to dbl the size they first took out?
Surgeon feels that it is aggressively growing again, wouldn't it be much better to just remove it, even thou paralysis of the face would be most the biggest thing to conquer and loss of hearing in that side?
Answer: Yes, I have heard of a mastoid tumor being related to an acoustic neuroma.
What is concerning about your question is that your surgeon feels that yours is aggressively growing and that you have had surgery before.
Below are two excellent links to relevant information regarding acoustic neuromas. The discussion is beyond the scope of answer that can responsibly be given in this format, but is covered at the Hopkins web site.
I would strongly suggest pursuit of a second opinion. Maybe from one of the doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Question: Can you feel your mastoid bone? The mastoid bone is a bone that rests right below your ear, almost tucked behind it, but more below. I can feel what i think is my mastoid on the left side of my head, but it's hollow on the right. and my grandma is hollow on both sides.
Can you feel yours? is it something i should be worried about. If you can't feel it, is it normal that i can?
i just need some answers please.
Answer: I am a nurse and mr medic has it right on......I checked his sites and he is right.
You can alway discuss this with your family doctor the next time you see him.
Here is some more info:
Its outer surface is rough, and gives attachment to the Occipitalis and Auricularis posterior. It is perforated by numerous foramina; one of these, of large size, situated near the posterior border, is termed the mastoid foramen; it transmits a vein to the transverse sinus and a small branch of the occipital artery to the dura mater.
The position and size of this foramen are very variable; it is not always present; sometimes it is situated in the occipital bone, or in the suture between the temporal and the occipital.
The mastoid portion is continued below into a conical projection, the mastoid process, the size and form of which vary somewhat; it is larger in the male than in the female.
This process serves for the attachment of the Sternocleidomastoid, Splenius capitis, and Longissimus capitis.
On the medial side of the process is a deep groove, the mastoid notch (digastric fossa), for the attachment of the Digastricus; medial to this is a shallow furrow, the occipital groove, which lodges the occipital artery.
The inner surface of the mastoid portion presents a deep, curved groove, the sigmoid sulcus, which lodges part of the transverse sinus; in it may be seen the opening of the mastoid foramen.
The groove for the transverse sinus is separated from the innermost of the mastoid air cells by a very thin lamina of bone, and even this may be partly deficient.
Some good pics are at this site as well.

Question: Can a CFS leak cause fluid in mastoid cells? NEED URGENT ANSWER PLEASE
BEST ANSWER GETS 10 POINTS!!!!!!!!!!
Answer: NOPE.
classically CSF leaks occur in places like ..ie nose in anterior cranial fossa fractures, or ears in middle cranial fossa fractures.
the mastoid cells are spaces in the bone, behind the ears, they can get inflammed with some chronic ear infections. but There are no case reports of CSF in mastoid cells.
Mastoiditis, is fluid/infection of the mastoid cells and needs urgent treatment, but that's not CSF.
Question: I have shooting pain, the top of my jaw bone, behind my left ear. Point just below my mastoid process bone.?
