Question: metronidazole????? can metronidazole give me a yeast infection? my doctor prescribed me metronidazole and now im paranoid that its giving me a yeast infection. if so what do i do because i have 4 more days left on this medication.
Answer: Yes. all antibiotics can cause a yeast infection. Yeast is normally present in the vagina of a healthy woman relative to the quantity of normal bacteria. When antibiotics disrupt the flora and kill the normal bacteria, it disproportionally offsets the amount of yeast: causing a yeast infection.
Question: How much Metronidazole should a pup take? I have a 11 week old chihuahua pup that weighs about 2 lbs. She had Giardia and Coccidia before I got her. When I found out I treated her with .25cc of Metronidazole and Albon for 5 days. A week later had her examined again. She came back positive for Giardia again. Now I am told to treat her again with .25cc of Metronidazole for two weeks. Does anyone know if this .25cc amount is right? When I read about it I hear different amounts. Obviously it didnt get rid of it the first time? Please help.
Answer: If the veterinarian told you .25cc then it's the right amount.
Sometimes parasites are very stubborn and need to have an extra dose of medication to get rid of them. Once sometimes isn't enough.
We need 2 stools samples to be NEOP (no evidence of parasites) in order to say that they are clear of parasites. It may be different in at your vets practice.
If you're unsure of the doseage, call them and confirm. It'll be easy enough for the receptionist or vet tech to look up the informationon the computer.
Question: How long after going off metronidazole is it ok to take prilosec again? I was on metronidazole for over a week, but I've been off of it for 4 days now. Is it ok to start taking prilosec, or should I wait a few mroe days?
Answer: why not skip the pills for now? make some diet changes instead -avoid processed foods, caffeine, and cow's milk products. increase your intake of fiber & probiotics. drink plenty of water, keep a food diary, and follow up with your GI doctor.
Question: I was just prescribed the antibiotic Metronidazole for BV. Is it ok to take Acidophilus? I normally take Acidophilus daily but have heard that it can cancel out the bacteria that the Metronidazole is trying to get rid of. Should I stop taking it until I am finished with the 7 days of antibiotics?
Answer: wow you got a nasty bacteria in you if you are taking Metronidazole. It's really strong, so I would avoid taking anything else until you finish the Metronidazole.
Question: How long does Flagyl (Metronidazole antibiotic) take to be out of your system? How long does one Flagyl (Metronidazole) pill take to be out of your system? I am taking 3 a day, so does that mean 8 hours?
Answer: Yes, if you are told to take 3 tablets a day, ideally take it every 8 hours with food.
It takes 5.5 half lives for a drug to be out of your system. The elimination half-life of metronidazole is 7-8 hours, therefore it would take 44 hours (5.5 x 8 hours) or approximately 2 days before metronidazole is out of your system. So alcohol should be avoided during and for 48 hours after stopping therapy.
Question: Can i take metronidazole the day after a night of drinking? Ive been given metronidazole by my dentist. I am planing to have a big night tomorrow night with lots of drinking. I know that drinking after taking metronidazole will do you no good, but what if i start taking it the day after a night of drinking?
Answer: I asked my doctor about it because I'm on the same medication and she cautioned against it.
I would probably wait a few days before taking metronizadole. Just to be sure that the alcohol is completely flushed out of you.
Question: How long does it take Metronidazole to work? My partner took Metronidazole for trich yesterday. How long does it take for the infection to go away? When can we resume intercourse? If he took 1/2 dose 2 pills, will that work instead of all 4 pills? He didn't want to take them all because they are bitter. He is not showing symptoms so he thinks it is ok.
Answer: He needs to finish the medicine and you guys should probably wait a week or so before you resume intercourse (although you should ask the doc to make sure, I'm surprised they didn't tell him at his appt) to make sure all the infection is gone. They prescribe that number of pills for a reason, that's what it takes to get rid of it. Just because he's feeling better doesn't mean all the infection is gone. Good luck!
Question: Does any one know what Metronidazole does and its role in curing pancreatitus in puppies? I have been advised to give my new adopted puppy 125mg of Metronidazole to help with his bout of pancreatitus. Harley and I are going to the vet on Saturday morning to get a check up and to see why his pancreatitus has returned. I was told that it could be due to stress of a new owner, a new home, new food. I haven't fed him anything out of the ordinary. Any one know about this drug and how it works?
Harley is 1 year and 11 months old. He is up to date on all shots and treatments. He has also been vaccinated against Parvo. Thanks for all of the feedback so far!
Answer: If a vet did not reccommend this, I wouldnt do it.. its an antibiotic.
Basic Information
Metronidazole is an antibiotic which is commonly used to treat protozoal infections and anaerobic bacterial infections. It also has anti-inflammatory effects in the bowel. Metronidazole is bactericidal; it kills bacterial microorganisms by disrupting their DNA. It is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract, metabolized by the liver and excreted in the urine and the feces. Because metronidazole only has activity against anaerobic bacteria, it is commonly used with other antibiotics when it is used to treat mixed bacterial infections. It is compatible with many other antibiotics including penicillin antibiotics, aminoglycosides, and some cephalosporins.
Dogs and Cats
Metronidazole is used to treat protozoal infections in cats and dogs including Giardia, Entamoeba, Trichomonas, and Balantidium. It is also used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections. Metronidazole has immune modulating activity and may be prescribed to treat inflammatory bowel disease. It may be used to treat colitis caused by other antibiotics, periodontal disease (especially in cats), Clostridium perfringens enterotoxemia, tetanus, diarrhea of undetermined cause, pancreatic insufficiency (with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), and complications of severe liver disease. Metronidazole may be used with corticosteroids in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, or gum disease (gingivitis/stomatitis) in cats. Topical metronidazole gel is used in the treatment of skin infections, such as feline chin acne.
Metronidazole is usually tolerated better if given with food and there are a wide variety of flavors and preparations made by compounding pharmacies in order to deal with the problems associated with the bitter taste. Because of the variety of uses for this drug, dose amount, frequency and duration of treatment vary widely.
Question: How much metronidazole should I take? I am in China. I bought a bottle of 200 mg tablets of metronidazole because I know I have a vaginal infection. I have had it before and it's bacterial. I know this is the right medicine but how much should I take? Thanks for the help.
Answer: Also known as Flagyl, commonly used for anaerobic infections. Average dosing is 500mg twice a day, but can vary.
Question: Can I drink alcohol while taking metronidazole antibiotics? I am currently on my 5th day of taking 250mg of metronidazole to treat an infection I have. I hear that there are some side effects if you drink alcohol while on it. Has anyone ever drank while on it? And if so, what happened? Should I risk it? I won't be drinking a lot. Just one or two drinks.
Answer: NO.
=
NO Alcohol consumption while taking any antibiotics.
-Alchohol & metronidazole can cause vomiting == Embarrassing!
=
- "Consumption of alcohol should be avoided by patients during systemic metronidazole therapy and for at least 48 hours after completion of treatment."
Question: What will happen if i drink alcohol one day after taking metronidazole? i'be been taking it for a week and finished my course of metronidazole last night...
I've got a party to go tonight and just wonder what would happen if i drink alcohol???
please help
Answer: Well there are a few known side affects: nausea, flushing of skin, vomiting, accelerated heart rate, shortness of breath... But there is no concrete evidences to say that these effects actually happen. Experts advise that alcohol should be avoided for at least 2 to 3 days after completion of the metronidazole. But it's up to you.
Question: How long does Metronidazole take to work? Hi, I've been on Metronidazole for 3 days now for a bacteria infection. How long does it take to work? I'm very uncomfortable around my vagina. It hurts to go to the bathroom and wipe when I'm done. I just want some relief down there and nothing is helping right now. What can I do???
Answer: I'd give it another day and go back to the doc's and check that there's nothing else going on. Did they take swabs? Also worth remembering that antibiotics can kill off good bacteria as well and allow yeast to grow, which means you could end up with thrush, and your symptoms are very similar to thrush. Try some plain, bio yoghut, and a little salt in a warm bath, and wash with water after going to the loo. also try drinking some cranberry juice. DO NOT drink any alcohol as metrondiazole and alcohol have serious interactions, and abstain for 48hours after, best of luck
Question: Can I try to get pregnant right after I finish using Metronidazole vaginal gel? I've just done my last dose of Metronidazole vaginal gel. I like to know if I should I wait till my next period to start trying to get pregnant. If anyone knows, please help.
Answer: Wait till your next period! There's more chance of getting pregnant, trust me I should know! I know this because of experience! Good luck.
Question: I took Metronidazole 500mg tablets 3 times a day for 2 months, how long till it leaves my system? I had a brain abscess and they just took me off my medications. How long till Metronidazole is completely out of my system?
Answer: Just a few days after you stopped.
Question: Is it ok to give Metronidazole to my puppy? I brought my 8 month old puppy to the vet because he was vomiting and had diarrhea. He prescribed Metronidazole to my puppy. 14 tablets 50mg each. Two a day. When I looked up the side effects (which included nausea and diarrhea itself!) it suggested not giving this to puppies or pregnant dogs. Is this ok? He also seems very tired when taking this.
Answer: My vet prescribed metronidazole when my dog had diarrhea and it cleared up after one dose. So, give it to him because the vet said it's ok. As with any drug, the benefits of the medication greatly outweigh the risks or side effects. They have to report it as a side effect even if it happens to only one person. Odds are... it will help more than it will hurt.
Question: Can you have sex while taking metronidazole? I got prescribed metronidazole for a bacterial infection, and was wondering if I could have sex. I only have one partner so that is not a concern, just wondering if it would make the infection worse, or if it would decrease my chances of getting rid of the infection. Thanks.
Answer: Your correct to be concerned but for the wrong reasons. If you have an infection which is bacterial, you should hold off on sex because there's a possibility you could spread it to your partner. The take the medication, get rid of the infection and then let your guy infect you all night long.
Question: what is the use of metronidazole in pilinidal sinus desiese? i get operated last eight months back for pilinidal sinus, know i am suffering from same disease
again. doctor suggested metronidazole 500mg tablets for 10 days. i want to know that what is
the use of this tablet regarding this disease?
Answer: Because of the location of the cyst, the most likely organisms that would cause an infected pilonidal cyst is either anaerobes or Gram negative rods. That being said, we'd give flagyl for it because flagyl is good for anaerobic bacterial infections of the cyst.
Question: if someone has been prescribed Metronidazole for a bacteria in the vagina is it a STD? Hi i realy need some help on this if a person has been perscribed Metronidazole for a bacteria in there vagina and in pretty sure the bacteria is Trichomoniasis is this caught only threw sexual intercourse ie is it a STD or can it occur naturaly ?
Answer: Metronidazole is prescribed for various infections (Trichomoniasis, Bacterial Vaginosis, and possibly in the treatment of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease depending on the cause).
If it is for an infection present in the vagina, chances are it is either Bacterial Vaginosis or Trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis is not technically considered to be a sexually transmitted infection, but Trich is. You can get Trich from unprotected sexual activity, including mutual masturbation and sharing of sex toys.
The parasite Trichomonas vaginalis that causes Trich does not occur naturally, you must acquire it. 50% of women infected do not have ANY symptoms, those that do typically present with off-white or yellowish-green frothy vaginal discharge, a sore or itchy vagina, and/or pain during intercourse or urination.
Question: Will Metronidazole show up on a drug test or make a false positive? The last time I took Metronidazole was on September 13 and I just had a drug test on October 4 for a job.
