Sebaceous Gland
Oil producing gland of the skin
Question: Is there a molecule that binds androgens to the sebaceous gland? i know that androgens causes the seabceous gland to enlarge, but i also know that there are androgen receptors at the sebaceous gland that cause the gland to overproduce sebum (if im correct on this one). well, what causes these androgens to bind to the sebaceous gland? is it some molecule or something?
Answer: Androgens simply activate the sebaceous glands by hormonal communication. Sebaceous glands are classified as Holocrine glands. Holocrine secretions are produced within the cell followed by the rupture of the plasma membrane, thus releasing the cellular contents into the lumen.
Examples of holocrine glands include the sebaceous glands of the skin and the meibomian glands of the eyelid. The sebaceous gland is an example of a holocrine gland, because its product of secretion (sebum) is released with remnants of dead cells.
Question: Are the holocrine glands an eccrine sweat gland, apocrine sweat gland, or a sebaceous gland? Are the holocrine glands an eccrine sweat gland, apocrine sweat gland, or a sebaceous gland?
Answer: Sebaceous gland.
Question: What Can I do about a Vaginal Sebaceous Gland? I have a small bump on the inner side of my labia, which was diagnosed by an OB/GYN as a sebaceous cyst. It's pretty small, but I'd like to get rid of it somehow. My OB/GYN said that they sometimes go away on their own, but if they're become larger or irritated/infected, that they are removed. Is there some way to quicken the disappearance of sebaceous cysts? Would a warm/hot washcloth help? How can I prevent them in the future? I don't understand how I got it in the first place, I'm a very clean person; I shower every morning, and take a long, warm bath at least once or twice a week.
Answer: A sebaceous cyst is just a blocked oil gland, much like a pimple elsewhere on the body. Using warm packs may help them drain sooner by softening the plug. Just be careful not to burn yourself. Using warm sitz baths may help as well.
It's also possible that you are describing an Bartholin's cyst, which is a gland near the entroitus (entrance) of the vagina. This provides natural lubrication to the area, but occasionally becomes inflamed or infected. Sometimes antibiotics and local treatment with heat will resolve this, but they can become very large and painful and may need to be opened and even need a drain inserted. Some women may have one flare up in a lifetime and others have repeated problems that require surgical removal. (This is a fairly minor procedure, but has to be carefully done to prevent a relapse.)
Getting one of these doesn't mean you aren't hygienic, but good hygiene may mean they heal sooner. Overactive oil production is the culprit here and that just goes along with having hormones.
Question: where is the sebaceous gland located and what is their function? also what fluid do they produce?
Answer: (1) Most sebaceous glands are associated with hair, wherever it is present on the body, and secrete SEBUM, an oily fluid.
(2) Some sebaceous glands are present in non-hairy (glabrous) skin, and secrete sebum into sweat (see below for locations).
(3) Sebaceous glands called Fordyce's granules, present in 80% of the population adjacent to the lips and cheeks, do not produce any secretory fluid.
(4) Meimobian glands, a specialized sebaceous gland located at the rim of eyelids, secrete sebum into tears.
A branched type of acinar gland, sebaceous glands exist in humans throughout the skin except in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
Sebaceous glands can usually be found in hair-covered areas, where they are connected to hair follicles. The glands deposit sebum on the hairs, and bring it to the skin surface along the hair shaft. The structure consisting of hair, hair follicle, arrector pili muscle, and sebaceous gland is known as a pilosebaceous unit.
Sebaceous glands are also found in non-haired areas (glabrous skin) of eyelids, penis, labia minora, and nipples. Here, the sebum traverses ducts which terminate in sweat pores on the surface of the skin. Pores range in size from 50 to 80 μm on average.
The inner surface of the lip and the buccal surface of the cheek can potentially contain ectopic sebaceous glands commonly known as Fordyce's spots or Fordyce granules. These occur as yellowish circular dots that form clusters. 80 percent of the population have Fordyce granules and these sebaceous glands are asymptomatic.
At the rim of the eyelids, meibomian glands are a specialized form of sebaceous gland. They secrete sebum into the tears coating the eye, to slow evaporation.
Question: How to control the sebaceous gland so that it doesnt produce too much oils? is there any way to control(at least abit) the production of excess oils by the sebaceous glands...
Answer: Try using Toner or Astringent - Proactiv is great too! Good luck:)
Question: I have sebaceous gland on foreskin any home treatment? I went to a doctor but he said it was nothing, but it really hurts so im askin is there any home treatment for it to go away, pls help.
thanks in advance
Answer: Can't you just pop it like you would do with a zit?
And then put neosporine on it to prevent infections.

Question: how does the sebaceous gland synthesize sebum? i know it contains things like triglycerides and cholesterol but i really would like to know how much is pulled from the blood stream and could the triglycerides be from ldl or vldl cholesterol?
or any relation ship with serum cholesterol at all?
Answer: The sebaceous glands are glands found in the skin of mammals.
Sebum
Sebaceous glands secrete an oily substance called sebum (Latin, meaning fat or tallow) that is made of fat (lipids) and the debris of dead fat-producing cells. In the glands, sebum is produced within specialized cells and is released as these cells burst; sebaceous glands are thus classified as holocrine glands.
Sebum is odorless, but its bacterial breakdown can produce odors. Sebum is the cause of some people experiencing "oily" hair if it is not washed for several days. Earwax is partly sebum.
Function
Sebum acts to protect and waterproof hair and skin, and keep them from becoming dry, brittle, and cracked. It can also inhibit the growth of microorganisms on skin.
Composition
The composition of sebum varies from species to species; in humans, the lipid content is as follows:
Percent composition Substance
25% wax monoesters
41% triglycerides
16% free fatty acids
12% squalene
Locations of glands
A branched type of acinar gland, these glands exist in humans throughout the skin except in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
Sebaceous glands can usually be found in hair-covered areas where they are connected to hair follicles to deposit sebum on the hairs, and bring it to the skin surface along the hair shaft. The structure consisting of hair, hair follicle and sebaceous gland is known as pilosebaceous unit.
Sebaceous glands are also found in non haired areas of lips, eyelids, penis, labia minora and nipples; here the sebum reaches the surface through ducts. At the rim of the eyelids, meibomian glands are a specialized form of sebaceous gland that secrete sebum into the tears coating the eye to prevent evaporation.
LDL and VLDL are apoprotein complex with lipids which play important roles in lipid metabolism. from intestinal cells to muscle or adipocyte for storage or liver for metabolisation to occur.
The fats contents of sebum is due to the sebaceous glands itself(its cell contents).
Question: What is a better option for a lump (caused by blocked sebaceous gland) on the back, surgery or ointment?
Answer: ointment wont help. I had one on my neck and had to get surgery to remove it. It flaired up on holiday and the doc drained it but had to get it removed when I came home. I was terrified but never felt a thing.
Question: Is there anyway to get rid of Sebaceous gland bumps? i have lots and lots of these little tiny pin tipped sized bumps around the skin of my eye diagnosed to be Sebaceous glands, the doc said there was NO WAY to get rid of them. so is this true or was she not really sure? i want smooth skin but these things just stick out and make me look older and sleepy all the time and i am only 18 lol
yea yea cysts! my bad lol i said milia but the doc said sebaceous but idk i am so confused lol
Answer: You mean sebaceous cysts?
Sebaceous cysts can be removed through extraction using a syringe or surgery depending on size.
I had one before. It disappeared after taking required dosages of amoxicillin described by the physician.. no extraction required..
or If you mean Milia..
These can be cauterized.
Question: i don't have acne but my sebaceous gland are very sore and inflamed, why? what caused painful sebaceous gland on lips?
Answer: IT IS NOT TRUE THAT SEBACEOUS GLANDS ARE NOT PRESENT AS SAID BY PERSON ABOVE ME PL. NOTE............ Fordyce granules are sebaceous glands that are located in the vermilion zone of the lips and the oral mucosa. Historically, these sebaceous glands have been considered ectopic[MEANING: they don't belong there]; however, because they are such a common clinical finding in the oral cavity, Fordyce granules should be regarded as a variation of normal anatomy.
Question: Sebaceous gland bumps? I have sebaceous gland bumps on my inner labia, they're very small and white and they're in clusters closer to the opening and they're quite noticeable if you're looking at it clearly. I've never had sex, it is NOT an std, but I can understand why a guy would think that it might be since guys really know nothing about the vagina unless they're a doctor, lol. but should I be worried that a guy would think there's something wrong? I don't want to have to explain, but I wouldn't want him to think I had an std. I just don't want to be self conscious about it.. vaginas just aren't THAT attractive to most guys in the first place unless it's the tiniest, most perfect labia ever that barely even looks like a vagina, but there are so many women who don't have that, it's frustrating. haha. : /
Answer: I don't think any guy is gonna care about it to be honest. Just don't say anything and continue as normal, only explain if questions are asked.
And btw all vaginas look very attractive, I can assure you of that =)
Question: how to stop the Sebaceous gland producing sebum >? please ! i know that its complex but i need help
Answer: Isotretionoin is the drug of choice. But consult doctor.
Question: any scientific people outhtere? what damage can the sun do to the Sebaceous glands? is it damage caused to the Sebaceous gland that causes the skin to dry out?
Answer: sebaceous gland , gland in the skin of mammals that secretes an oily substance called sebum. In humans, sebaceous glands are primarily found in association with hair follicles but also occur in hairless areas of the skin, except for the palms of the hand and soles of the feet. Sebum is a mixture of fat and the debris of dead fat-producing cells. These cells are constantly replaced by new growth at the base of the glands. Generally the sebum is deposited on the hairs inside the follicles and is brought up to the surface of the skin along the hair shaft. In hairless areas, the sebum surfaces through ducts. Sebum lubricates and protects the hair and skin and prevents drying and irritation of membranes. Sebum may collect excessively as a result of poor hygiene, a diet rich in fats, or accelerated glandular activity, especially during adolescence. Excessive secretions of sebum may be related to acne , certain forms of baldness , and other skin disorders. the suns damage to sebaceous glands are: NB: Not ranging in order
1) unsual spots
2) many spots
3) a severe form of acne
4) certain forms of baldness (even if you're a child!)
5) skin disorders
6) skin cancer
7) sebaceous cyst
that's all i can think of....
hope i helped!
p.s i spent ages researching this. i hope all the hard work and effort goes to good worth.
Question: what do the sebaceous gland, nerves and dermis do to help keep us warm in cold conditions? for science project.
serious anwsers only.
Answer: A LOT!
First, nerves. they conduct the feeling of cold to the brain(where else?) the blood capileries near the skin constrict and those near the muscles dialate. next the shivering, produces heat to warm the blood.
Sebecious glands release sebum(a kind of oil or fat, same stuff in pimples) that is an insulator and prevents heat loss.
The skin muscles controlling the hair contract, hair rises and traps the warm air, also air is an insulator.
Adverse conditions, all blood supply to the appendages is reduced, ears and the nose get cold(due to lack of warm blood) warm blood gets concentrated in the chest abdomen and head to warm the vital organs.
Question: wat is sebaceous gland? say me about sebaceous glands and steps to be taken to overcome the problems caused by those glands.. Does it do any harm to our health?
Answer: Sebaceous gland produces oily substance called sebum which makes the skin smooth
It also protects the skin against bacteria and the body against rapid evaporation of water
Sebum is secreted at the base of each hair follicle
Question: What's the difference between sebaceous glands and sweat glands? Whats the difference between sebaceous glands and sweat glands?
Answer: Sebaceous glands are connected to hair folicals, which produce sebum, which then can form spots if alot is produced, it'll surface the skin
Sweat glands are under your arm pits and most other parts of the body
Question: What is the difference between sebaceous glands and fordyce spots? Ive got these bumps down south and im a fifteen year old male virgin. From what i can tell from the internet is that its either sebaceous glands or fordyce spots. I think one website said one causes the other? If anyone could help me out and explain the difference it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Answer: sebaceous glands is medical for sweat glands. google it!
Question: wats sebaceous gland? say me about sebaceous glands and steps to be taken to overcome the problems caused by those glands.. Does it do any harm to our health?
Answer: Sebaceaus glands are present in our skin. They secretes oily secretion. There are plenty on nose, that why nose becomes so oily.
They are normal part of our body. Nothing to worry or do with them.
But those glands can be site of acne, specially during teen-ages. Only then you need treatment.
To reduce chance of acne, it is better to use a face-wash/ a mild soap (I personally use soap) to keep your skin clean.
Try to eat some fresh vegetables/fruits everyday. That is helpful for many functions of your body as well skin.
Question: I think I have a Sebaceous Gland? I have a small bump that looks like a bubble it doesnt hurt or itch and is located right next to my cliteris whats could this be?? It is soft when i press on it.... By the way I have been tested and I do not have herpes or any other std
Answer: A sebaceous gland is a fancy way of saying sweat gland. I wouldn't worry. They are common and usually form on the face. If it doesn't change color or get infected I'd just ignore it.
Question: How can I make my scalps produce more sebum from the sebaceous glands? I'm from Yemen and unlike my brother's, my hair is dry more or less like short afro hair. I want to make my hair permanently soother and soft and less importantly straighter?
I did a little research that people with smooth, soft hair produce more sebum from the sebaceous glands. Is there something to make mine do the same?
PLEASE NOTE: I am not asking for common topical hair products. This would probably be an oral supplement that effects the root cause.
Answer: Hot, humid climates which may stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Testosterone (an androgen hormone) targets the skin and sebaceous glands where sebum is produced. Testosterone combines with the enzyme, 5alpha-reductase, to produce dihydrotestosterone, which stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce increased volumes of sebum.
Jojoba oil, an excellent oil that can imitate sebum in your hair and penetrate the cuticles. Use only a few drops and spread it throughout the tips and dry parts of your hair (the scalp doesn’t need more oil!). You can also adjust your diet. Is it a surprise that a diet high in oily food and grease will result in a scalp filled with sebum? Cause and consequence, my friends! Drinking more water, eating more fruits and veggies, and consuming fewer alcoholic beverages can all reduce the amount of sebum your scalp produces, helping to solve half of your combination hair problem. What’s more, the extra water you drink will help to heal that dry hair at the same time.
