Capsular Contracture
Shrinkage of the scar tissue around an implant that causes hardenss, distortion, and sometime pain
Question: What is the cost for capsular contracture correction for one breast? One of my implants is firm and sits a little higher then the other. I'm trying to find out the cost to fix that one breast. Please do not answer if, well if you don't have the answer.
Answer: Varies widely from state and Dr. Have your surgeon give you an estimate. Most plastic surgeons offer free consults.
Question: What Can Be Done About Capsular Contracture Once You Develop It?
Essentially, capsular contracture is excessive scar tissue that forms around a breast implant. With almost any foreign item placed in the body, from a splinter to an artificial joint, the body’s natural reaction is to either try to get rid of it or form scar tissue around it to wall it off from the rest of the body. The formation of some scar tissue around a breast implant is normal and natural.
Answer: debridement.
Question: Capsular contracture after a breast augmentation? Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I had asymetrical breast and had an implant put in my left breast to correct the problem. I had my augmentation done in May of 2003 and had a second surgery in March of 2004 to correct the "CC". I believe I have it again.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had "CC" after augmentation and what you did for it? How many times did you have it?
Answer: sorry, i never got it, but i feel for you. I am sorry that you are having this re-occuring problem. I believe you should contact your surgeon and have him check it out. As you know, this is nothing to play with. Good luck!
Question: Can anyone give me more inforamtion about capsular contracture? I had a breast enhancment in March. My right? breast is soft and natural, my left one seems harder. I don't know why I just noticed this or I don't know if it's turning into capsular contracture. Also, is it something you can live w/. So far no pain, just feels strange. It looks fine too, like the other one. Just didn't know if it was something that I could live with. I've been massaging like crazy trying to help. Any info? I can't afford to go to the doctor right now.
Answer: give us a picture
Question: capsular contracture on the nhs??? does anyone know if caspular correction can be done on the nhs and how long the waiting list is approximately???
Answer: casper is a very good animation! Why would you want to change it?
Question: Should I still get surgery even though there are many risks? I have thought about getting breast implants for quite awhile. Two reasons are because: a) I have gotten many rude comments about them in the past because of them being small (I'm an A). b) I think it will help my self-esteem. I know that the cost of surgery is high. I also know that there are many risks such as capsular contracture, uneven results, leaking and/or breaking, excessive bleeding & swelling, severe infections, scars, pain, etc. Even though there are these risks and the cost of surgery is expensive should I still get implants?
Answer: If you feel like you really need them and want to take the risk then I would do it..but do it for yourself! Don't let peoples comment make or break you. I'm sure there is someone out there who will love you for what you have. Just work with what you have & show confidence.
Question: how to get rid of scar tissue around chin implants? I have been trying without success at multiple doctors to get rid of "capsular contracture" around my chin implants. They were put in 15 years ago. Is there any solution??
Answer: I am not sure specifically about scar tissue around chin implants but for scar tissue in general it is good to massage out the effected area. I know this may sound weird but if your place the tissue between your thumb and pointer finger and apply mild pressure and move in a circular pattern you may be able to break down some of the scar tissue and reduce it however this may not get rid of it completely. If you are having issues with the scar itself I have heard that applying scar tissue to the effected area reduces redness and swelling.
Question: breast implants with pain and swelling in right breast.? I'm 26 and I have 4 year old submuscular silicone implants and I have been experiencing pain and swelling in my right breast. Its been going on for a week now and the pain has moved to my underarm and chest. My chest gets tight on the right side and its hard to breath. My right breast is slightly firmer than my left one. Is this cancer? My grandmother died from breast cancer and my sister has noncancerous cysts. Or could this be capsular contracture? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
Answer: The rapid and acute appearance of your symptoms suggests that you may be experiencing ruputure or infection and not cancer.
Get to a doctor immediately rather than wasting time on YA. If you have an infection, it could spread and cause you major damage.
No one can see you so it is impossible to give an accurate assessment.
This is one of the many reasons that I despise implants.
Question: I have a question about breast augmentation revision surgery?? Help please!!!? I had breast augmentation surgery done last year in Feb and due to capsular contracture I am undergoing another surgery next week. Do you know if the sensitivity will decrease/ increase after second time? Will I experience permanent numbness of nipples?
I am really scared. The first time I lost some part of sensation around nipples I am not sure if by every surgery the risk of loosing more sensation will increase?
Have you had any similar experience?
Answer: Id say the sensitivity will decrease and numbness of nipples increase?
It's you're choice honey :) But I say let 'em be natural :)
Question: If a cosmetic surgeon performed a procedure wrong should he incur all costs to correct it? I had breast implants put in about two years ago. The doctor had initially said that if they didn't turn out how I liked (size etc) or there were complications (capsular contracture etc) then it would only cost me about $500 for anesthesia and no surgeon fee to correct it.
It turned out the doctor placed one of the implants higher than the other, not by much but still noticeable. I voiced this concern from the first appointment after surgery and was told to give it time to settle. Two years later, the implant is still too high and I had to convince him to correct it. He agreed to waive a surgeon fee but is still charging me around $500 for anesthesia and also $600 for an "operating room fee".
My concern is this. If I paid over $7,000 to have a surgeon preform a procedure, and it was preformed incorrectly, why on earth am I now paying him 1,100 more to have it fixed? The office has told me this is industry standard. Does anybody have any experiences with this or know if this sounds accurate?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Answer: there is no reason for the dr to pay for the anesthesia and operating room costs. he stood by his word and is waiving his fees to correct his mistake he can't help that the anesthesia and OR have an additional cost.
i under stand that most insurance companies don't pay for cosmetic surgery but since this is no longer something you want but more of a need since the surgeon screwed up your insurance company MAY cover the cost of anesthesia and the OR. you should call them and at least ask. otherwise i feel that YOU are the one responsible for the additional costs.
Question: Nipple Placement in Breast Lift/Augmentation? I'm thinking about getting a lift or augmentation. I was wondering if a plastic surgeon could move nipples or place and implant in a position to where my nipples will be more in the middle instead of being off to the side without having cut my nipple off? Also what's the best way to get a breast implant inserted (ie above the muscle, behind the muscle, through the armpit, ect) when you go from a C cup to a D or DD cup? Also I read that ultrasonic therapy can help prevent Capsular Contracture. Is that true? What are some health problems that would make you a bad candidate for breast implants? Also is it better to lost weight (if you are overweight) before you have the surgery? If I got implants behind the muscle (and since I'm a C cup), would my breasts feel natural? Is it possible that sleeping on your stomach could rupture implants or will just severe injury cause this? Please post info. Thanks.
Also my nipples mostly point straight down and are probably considered to be on the underside of my breasts. Also my breasts sag because they're very heavy.
Also are smooth implants the best or another kind? I'm getting saline implants.
Also which feels more natural: Smooth implants or textured ones?
Is there a way to lift my breasts without having cut my nipple off and have large scars?
Which is better: round or teardrop?
It's not that I want implants in my body. I'd just actually like to have nice looking breasts. I was put on steriods and I lost a 100 pounds (my breasts sagged horribly before that but now they're worse). If I wanted to have a horrible body, I would never have bothered to lose the weight.
I don't have cable.
Answer: Usually I would field some of you questions - I'm an operating room nurse and have assisted with augmentations for breast cancer patients - but you just have too many questions. Go see a plastic surgeon and bring in a written list of questions.
One recommendation - do not - absolutely DO NOT - just go to the cheapest surgeon! Any person who has gone through a surgical residency can call themselves a plastic surgeon. Make sure that the person you are seeing has done a fellowship in plastic surgery and is in good standing with the national association of plastic surgeons. Ask to see photos of their past work - they should have quite a few for you to look at. You will be spending alot of money to have your surgery - so spend it wisely. Cheaper is definitely not better when it comes to stuff like this. Make appointments with a few doctors and talk to them all about what you want done.
Good luck!
Question: My mom had complications with her breast implants. does this mean I will have compications if I get them done? She had a capsular contracture in both of her breasts two years after she got them done. Which is basically where scar tissue forms inside of your breasts where the incision was and her scar tissue kept growing and made her breasts extremely hard and felt alot of pressure on them. It was a very uncomfortable and feeling and made her boobs hurt. She had to get them either removed or replaced or the implant would have popped, so she decided to get them taken out completely. I told her that I wanted to get mine done and she got really mad at me. Am I at a greater risk of this happening to me because it happened to my mom?
Answer: Yes but wrong area for this question, sunshine.
Question: Lump In My Breast!? I had a breast augmentation nearly a year ago and have had no problems what so ever but the other day when I was checking myself I noticed in one of them I have a large lump in the top of my breast and anther smaller one sort of under my arm (only just noticed that one!). Has anyone had a similar problem, I know of capsular contracture and read up on it, my breast isn't very firm or anything apart from these lumps, my other breast is normal. They both look normal in the mirror too. I am due on any time now so I am waiting untill I come on to see if it is hormonal or something plus I can't get a dr's appointment because they are all booked up at this time of year so I was just after some advise really. I will see the dr later on in the week.
Thanks allot x
Zorro: Thanks for that bit of good news Happy new year! Lol!
Cara G: It's my right breast yeah I have a partner it was he who sort of noticed it and then I had a grope to see what he was on about!
Also there Silicone Gel implants I had these as if they do rupture they don't leak into your system.
Thanks so far guys x
Answer: Hi Sara,
A great number of things can cause lumps in your breast, and the fact that you have had augmentation increases that list. Here are a few questions to ask yourself. Is it firm or soft? Is it painful to touch? Does the skin above it feel warm to touch or is it discoloured in anyway? (remembering as well that you have been touching and pinching at the area since you discovered it). Can you feel a cord like firmness running between it and the lump under you arm? (this could point the finger as the source being and infection). Remember in order to have fewer scares visible a great deal of you lift and augmentation sutures are deep inside, so scar tissue is another possibility.
I could go on for days, and we can imagine much worse than it probably is. What you need is an examination by a health care professional "As Soon As Possible". They will likely do an Ultrasound of the breast and can recommend your next step.
Try not to worry about it, until you can see someone, your GP, your GYN or even your Plastic Surgeon. Call all three explain your case and go to whomever can see you first!
Question: For women with breast implants (serious question)? After a lot of though I have decided that I will be getting a breast lift and implants. (Have kids + gravity = horrible thing to you body)
I was curious if anyone here had implants, if so did you get saline or silicone? What factors made you pick one over the other.
I know that silicone is said to be more realistic in shape and feel (especially for more petite women like myself) but has a higher rate of rupture and capsular contracture. Saline is safe in case of rupture but does not feel as natural and may wrinkle or ripple.
If there are other none surgical things that can be done I am open to those suggestions as well, though I am skeptical of what their results would be. I just really want to have a *great* bust for once in my life!
Answer: I don't have anything helpful to add. I just wanted to say good luck. I've thought about getting a lift since pregnancy and beastfeeding did bad things to mine. I would also like to have my enormous nipples reduced. But I'm too much of a wimp to go under the knife.
Question: I need some opinions plz... Serious answers only.? Ok so back in Oct 2008 I had a breast aug.. Day after I was sent to er with a hematoma and internal bleeding, week later dr decided to go in and fix it. Then I had a drain placed in my armpit for 2 weeks to drain fluid/blood. When removed left hole open I got bad infection and cellutis. The cellulitis got bad it caused capsular contracture and damaged some soft tissue. Dr neglected me for 4 months until I bled internally again. Point is I am 7 months in all this and considering lawsuit. I was in pain for 5 months he left me untreated. I had to have 4 surgeries and I have 5 scars form being cut open so much even though you can hardly see them. Should I sue him for malpractice since he neglected me? I still have 1 more surgery and recovery and have to have physical therapy to unfreeze my shoulder?
To top it off I had them remove the implants so I spent 5000 for hell... Good thing is it didnt affect my boobs they still look fine instead of sagging :) Never get Plastic Surgery it can kill you
Answer: Sometimes, with doctors they always have the advantage of being extremely busy and they don't always make direct contact with patients... Meaning it was your responsibility to set up appointments for follow-ups. It's not always fair, but if he didn't give you specific instructions, its his fault for not taking special care of you. Before considering a lawsuit, speak to an professional attorney who'll give you some free answers about your situation to see if you have enough for a case. If not, you'll end up wasting a lot of money for a lawyer and come out with nothing. Sorry bout your issue mama.
Question: A serious question (ladies only please).? I have been uncomfortable with my breast size for a long time. I've thought about getting implants but I am concerned about the risks. I have looked up some info on implants and these are my concerns.
Your scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks. Then they may remain the same size for several months, or even appear to widen. After several months, your scars will begin to fade, although they will never disappear completely.
Common complications include infection and other surgical risks, chronic breast pain, changes in sensitivity, capsular contracture, breakage and leakage, necrosis (skin death), and "cosmetic" problems (such as dissatisfaction with how the breast looks with the implant).
25% of silicone patients had implants removed.
Research clearly shows that implants are associated with significant health, cosmetic, and economic risks within the first several years and these risks increase over time.
Should I still get implants?
Answer: If you are so unsure you are asking us here, then the answer is no, you do not need to get implants yet. Wait a year and see if you still want them. Also try to talk to some women who have them and see what they say. You information does not include the need for touch up surgery in about 10 years or back problems caused by the implants after time.
Question: I am having a breast augmentation with Dr. Vikram Vijh? hello the op is booked in just under 4 weeks.has anyone on here had it done with Vik? if so can you please tell me your thoughts on your experience with him. the only thing i am worried about is if Capsular Contracture occurs i wont be able to afford to have it done again but i am thinking of going ahead anyway as his success rates are not far from perfect.. any comments please apart from nasty ones from people that are totally against Breast augmentation thank you.
Answer: What a shame. Pain, misery, suffering, and potential death by infection or under anesthesia, all for beauty...
Question: Breast Implants Cause Pain? HI! Just wondering if anyone will be able to help me out. Last May I had a breast augmentation using using silicone implants. About two months after I got them put it i realized that the right breast was much firmer and more round that the left. After going to the Dr he confirmed that what I had was a capsular contracture and Im having it corrected in two week. Since my surgery Ive been realizing that I have really bad memory loss and horrible pain in my joints through out my body. Could this be from the implants? I know they can cause problems in the long run but could it be the implants be causing these issues so soon?
Answer: Some peoples bodys dont take to foreign objects well at all. You are probably on of those people. I have even heard of silicone poisining.
Question: Can capsular contracture (hardening of breast tissue after breast augmentation) be easily removed by a surgeon? I had a breast augmentation 16 years ago. The "hardening" in one of my breasts has deformed that breast, in time, and I was told years ago that it was called "capsular contracture". Regardless of what it is called, the hardening of that breast (over the muscle, not under) is now showing more, as gravity has taken it's course since I first had this augmentation done. The other breast is fine, and has drooped naturally with time and age. I am 53 years of age, and in very good trim shape (not afraid of surgery, although I HAVE been told there is always a chance of infection (which DOES scare me, because if infection is VERY bad, the new implant would have to be taken out for approx 3 to 6 mths I believe). I am trying to make the decision of whether or not the surgery (removing old implants, removing old hardening (the capsular contracture)? I was told that removing means like "peeling lots of layers of wallpaper". I am not sure if this is only time consuming, or very difficult for a surgeon, or BOTH? If it is pretty normal proceedure that most cosmetic breast surgery surgeons perform, then my decision to have the implants changed would be a yes. If it is very difficult and high risk, then I will leave well enough alone. I have no complications, as it is only the hardening (not painful) that bothers me physically. Would there be any surgeons out there that would know the answer to this? I have had only one surgeon give me her answers, so far, and would like to have a couple more opinions, if possible. Thank you.
Answer: Hi,
The surgeon can do it.

Answer: Any decent surgeon should be able to correct this. It is the most common complication with breast augmentation, so most surgeons have probably corrected this problem quite a few times. I'm not sure how difficult the corrective procedure is, but I know a lot of women who have had it corrected and had no problems afterward (other than the expected post-op issues like pain, stiffness, and exhaustion). From everything I've read, the corrective procedure has no more risks than a normal augmentation. I don't know what "peeling layers of wallpaper" means, you have a pocket around the implant. If you open up the pocket, the implant should be easily accessible. You should go see some surgeons in your area. A lot of surgeons offer free consultations, so it shouldn't cost too much to get peace of mind.
