Question: Is Gore-Tex plastic technically considered a plastic product? Is Gore-Tex technically plastic? I can't figure it out. It's made using polytetrafluoroethylene, is that plastic?

Question: Can you wash a gore-tex jacket with normal washing powder in a normal washing machine or will it ruin it? I know that you can get special tech wash for goretex but its expensive and I wanted to know whether normal washing powder would do.
Answer: My gore-tex jacket has been washed many times with standard
laundry powdered detergent and is still in great shape. I followed the cleaning instructions sewn into the garment. Look
for care instructions sewn into the neck , waist, or side seam.
Question: How many miles would you expect good quality Gore-tex walking boots to last for? I paid £100 for my Meindl ladies Goretex walking boots and they have lasted for about 18 months and I walk, averaged out, about a mile every day. They have now fallen apart. Is this about average for a walking boot like this?
Answer: 1 mile a day for 18 months = 540miles.
I would expect them to last much more than that.
I walk the dog 4 miles a day and cheap trainers last me at least a year ( 1200 miles )
Question: Is it safe to spray your hiking boots (Merrell Chameleon) with silicone waterproofer if they have Gore-tex? Or will that ruin the gore-tex? I know gore-tex will keep your feet dry, but I wanted to keep the leather in good shape too.
Answer: Your Merrell boots use Gore-tex on the lining of the boot to keep water away from your feet, so coating the outside surfaces in a waterproofer will not damage the Gore-tex layer.
Gore-tex is usually used as a coating on the fabric portions of your boot. For the leather portions I suggest you use a wax-based leather waterproofer instead, since the wax will also condition the leather while providing water protection. Silicon products won't damage the Gore-tex coating or the leather material, but they may not last as long or condition the leather as well as a wax-based product may.

Question: Which is better: Gore tex or Toray dermizax? I'm looking to buy a ski jacket and ski pants and I'm looking around to see what the best materials and features are. There is so much to know, it's getting quite confusing! I like a particular jacket but it's made of Toray dermizax and I keep finding that everyone thinks Gore tex is better.
So which is better and WHY?
Answer: Gore-Tex is definitely more breathable than Dermizax. My ski patrol jacket is made of Dermizax and I constantly find condensation inside my patrol jacket. I get much less condensation inside my other Gore-Tex jackets and pants. Neither material, by themselves, provide insulation. What determines that is what type of material the Gore-Tex or Dermizax is laminated to. A heavier material (such as Cordura) will provide more insulation from the wind simply because it's thicker than say, something like a low-end nylon fabric. The real thing that keeps you warm is the mid-layers, such as down, fleece or wool. In addition to how breathable the material is, another thing that determines how well a fabric will keep you dry is whether or not the other shell has a DWR coating or something similar (like a 3M waterproofing chemical.)
Both materials will probably suit your needs for average skier use, but if you ski aggressively and tend to work up a good sweat while skiing, consider the function of the Gore-Tex coat instead of the fashion of the Dermizax jacket.

Question: Burton Gore Tex or Dakine Vectra Gloves? Theres a sale at proters tahoe and the burton gore tex 2009 gloves are on sale for 20 bucks.
Next, the dakin vectra gloves are on sale for 68 bucks...
Can someone help me decide based on the gloves and price on what to get?
Answer: Hey, me again. Burton gloves don't really have a good name for themselves yet since they focus more on snowboards, bindings and outerwear. I personally do have a pair of Burton Baker mitts from a few years ago and they do their job but soon as it gets too cold they can't take it.
Without price in mind I would get the Vectra without hesitating just because it is a better all around glove and also has gore-tex. Since you mentioned the prices though, you may want to buy the Burtons because even if they aren't as good, for $20 that is still a steal. I would get the Burtons and see how they work out for you. If you aren't happy buy a pair of Vectras on sale at the end of the season for like $30.
Hope this helps dude.
Question: What are some good brands of snowboarding jackets (ones with Gore-tex)? also what jacket would go with bright blue pants, if you could post a pic of a jacket like this that would be great.
i was thinking either black and white or plaid (or both)
Answer: If you absolutely are sold on having gore-tex with your jacket you pretty much just narrowed all your choices down to high end jackets that are going to cost you over $200. I only found 4 Burton Jackets and 2 Sessions Jackets for women that have gore-tex. Links are in my sources.
Good luck.
P.S. I suggest unless you ride the backcountry a lot or snowboard in bad weather that you don't set your eyes on gore-tex and just get a jacket from a half decent company (686, burton, special blend, quiksilver, DC, Sessions) that has a waterproof/breathablity rating of 10,000/10,000 or higher.

Question: Parents: How young can you put your children in 100% gore tex clothes?
Answer: What are gore tex clothes?
Question: What sort of chemical does Gore-Tex contain? Will it call cancer if it's implanted in your body?
I mean will it cause ... not call.... Typed it wrong sorry.
Answer: Gore-Tex materials are typically based on thermo-mechanically expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and other fluoropolymer products. They are used in a wide variety of applications such as high performance fabrics, medical implants, filter media, insulation for wires and cables, gaskets, and sealants. But Goretex is best known for its use in protective rain wear.
The simplest sort of rain wear is a two layer sandwich. The outer layer is typically nylon or polyester and provides strength. The inner one is polyurethane, aka PU, and provides water resistance, at the cost of breathability.
Early Goretex fabric replaced the inner layer of PU with a thin, porous fluoropolymer membrane (Teflon) with a polyurethane coating that is bonded to a fabric, usually nylon or polyester. This membrane had about 9 billion pores per square inch (around 1.4 billion pores per square centimeter), each of which is approximately 1/20,000 the size than a water droplet, making it impenetrable to liquid water while still allowing the smaller sized water vapour to pass through.
However it was found that when used in clothing the exposed Teflon membrane layer was easily damaged, as well as being compromised by exposure to the wearer's own sweat. As a result a third layer was added - a coating of PU on the inside of the fabric to protect the membrane. This final design has been criticized as offering greatly reduced performance and more marketing benefits than performance ones.
More recent fabrics such as eVent and Epic avoid the need for this inner PU coating and have been shown to have have higher breathability as a result, while still being rainproof.
Question: I want to buy a pair of Gore-tex wheat colored timberland boots...see details? I just wanna know the difference between a pair of gore-tex timberland boots and a pair of 'normal' timberland boots. Is there any difference? I just want the basic casual boot
Answer: If you're actually going to be out in the woods for extended periods in rain or snow, then definitely go with the gore-tex. If you're just wearing them around town you don't really need the gore-tex. however, if you have a foot-odor problem the gore-tex is the way to go even if just wearing around town. it breathes better.
