Anesthetic
A compound that reduces the ability to perceive pain; used in surgery to block pain
Question: Anesthetic ? I'm getting my tonsils out in 4 days and i'm getting Anesthetic. i don' know if it's needle or gas, etc. but what ever one it is, how long does it take for it to take affect and for me to be asleep?
also, wat are the chances of me waking up during the operation?
Answer: You go to sleep instantly. Extreme rarity about waking up during surgery.
Question: Would the anesthetic from an endoscopy show up in a urine sample for a work medical? To obtain a job I need to have a medical involving a drug screen - this is due the day after having an endoscopy. My question is, would the anesthetic from the endoscopy reflect in the urine sample as having drugs in my system? If so how long should I wait before having the urine test?
Answer: No.
Question: Why is local anesthetic in dentistry given to children according to their weight? Would that meen that you have to give less local anesthetic to smaller adults as well?
Answer: Actually, I feel there is hardly any such rule at least practically speaking. During all these 25 years, I have hardly given this thing any thought. Only thing I have done is just given local anesthetic in just right amount to cause numbness to carry out any dental procedure painlessly.
I dont feel anybody in practice gives much thought to it.
Question: What effect does an anesthetic have on hair that has a permanent? How long after having an anesthetic should you wait to get another permanent?
Answer: 48 hours
Question: How soon after a general anesthetic can I go back to normal activity? I'm having a 15 min procedure under general anesthetic in the afternoon. Will I be okay to attend a course the same evening? My husband is pressurizing me to go to this course. And can I go to work the following day?
Answer: You may feel weak or tired for a few days after receiving general anesthetic. You certainly should not drive the same day after receiving it, and I doubt you are going to feel well enough to attend a course. Whether or not you should go to work the day after will depend entirely on how you feel.
You should ask your doctor or anesthesiologist, in your husband's presence, when you can return to normal activity.
Question: What is the best anesthetic for anal sex? My girl wants to start having anal sex but she wants an anesthetic while we try. A strong one. So I want to know if there is any strong, safe, anesthetic you might recommend. She is well aware that she will feel the pain later.
Answer: An anesthetic for anal sex? First time I've heard of that!
Just use LOTS of lube, and she must be relaxed, otherwise of course it's going to hurt!
Question: How long does it take for General anesthetic to leave your system? I had major surgery almost 6 wks ago but im still feelin really tired, weak, sore bones and muscles - is this still effects of anesthetic - how long does it take to leave your system?
Answer: Have you been confined to bedrest all or most of these 6 weeks? It is very normal after a major operation to feel tired for quite some time. I am not sure what type of surgery you had, but anesthesia does wreak havoc on the body. It can give you sore and tired joints and muscles for quite some time even after it is out of your system. It is probably from your limited mobility. I am recovering from a major operation myself that I had in the beginning of December and I am just starting to get mobile again. By the time I get showered and dressed I feel like I just ran a marathon. Again, I don't know what type of surgery you had or what your post op restrictions were or what your status is. If you are worried put a call into your surgeon and ask if this is normal for your kind of surgery. Surgery takes a lot out of you. It is normal to be tired and weak.
Question: What kinda anesthetic should I get before I get a tattoo? I'm looking to get a tattoo in the future but I'm a real wuss for pain. I'm not planning on getting anything too large (maybe about three inches in diameter) but it should be on my ankle. I don't know if that's any more painful that getting it somewhere else or not . . . people have said contradictory things. Anyways, what kinda over-the-counter anesthetic can I get at a pharmacy and how effective will it be?
Answer: There isn't any. Any topical anesthetic can screw up a tattoo because it increases the space between the surface of your skin and the nerves underneath, and that's exactly where your tattoo goes, so it can lead to your tattoo ink spreading out a lot underneath the skin and leave you with an ugly blob. Any pills you could take wouldn't actually help with the pain, and you can't be tattooed if you're under the influence of anything stronger than a cigarette and an advil.
You have to deal with the pain if you want a tattoo that doesn't look like trash. Alcohol or aspirin are going to thin your blood so you'll just bleed the ink out and have faded spots. Touch ups hurt more than the original tattoo, in my opinion, so you wouldn't want to have to go in for that.
If you're too scared of the pain and psyching yourself out, it's going to hurt even more. The key is to relax and think about something else. I count tiles on the ceiling or look at the art on the wall if my artist finds a nerve or a bone (this happens a lot, I'm such a sucker for pain). As long as you remember to breathe and try not to think about the pain, you'll be fine.
Question: What is the difference between somebody that is in a coma vs under anesthetic? I recently saw an episode of House MD, where Dr. House's staff placed a women in a medically induced coma. But after a few minutes they saw her mouth still moving and quietly mumbling. They decided that she must still be feeling pain.
How is a coma different from being under anesthetic for surgery? How could a person still feel pain while in a coma?
Answer: anesthetic temporarily take away pain. renders a larger area of the body insensate by blocking transmission of nerve impulses between a part of the body and the spinal cord. Two frequently used types of regional anesthesia are spinal anesthesia and epidural anesthesia.
Question: How does anesthetic drugs which block the Na+ channels in neurons prevent pain during tooth extraction? How does anesthetic drugs used by dentists, which block the Na+ channels in neurons prevent a patient from feeling pain during a tooth extraction?
P.S.: Could you give like a chronology of events that are taking place in the channels?
Thanks alot BP-LO.
I also couldn't find any information relating to the action of mechanism when I googled.
Answer: To understand this, you need to think of the normal mechanism for the transmission of nervous signals. It depends on the existence of a different concentration of electric charges (ions) at either sides of the cell membrane, known as membrane potential. When a nervous signal reaches the cell, the flux of ions through the membrane channels changes, causing despolarization and the action potential.
Blocking the Na+ channels means that sodium cannot go back into the cell. Thus, the action potential cannot be generated and the nervous signal (in this case, the sensation of pain) can't be transmitted.
Question: What will happen if my dogs get anesthetic and they have eaten? I took my dogs to the vet this morning to have their teeth cleaned (And one is getting neutered)and the vet has to put the dogs under anesthetic to do this. I was told not to feed them this morning and I forgot. Yes, I am a dirtbag. Lets get past that and just tell me, if you know, what are the side effects? If it matters...they are both 6yr old rottweilers.
Thanks everyone! I called and told the vet I fed them. One is done and was fine and the other one is getting done right now and the vet said he would be fine. Thanks for making me fess up.
Answer: Yes it matters. I would tell the vet so they can keep an eye on them. Just make some excuse why you didnt tell the vet beforehand. The dogs are more important than the effects of the mistake for you. Just talk to the vet for goodness sake.
There are after-affects.
Question: Is there ageneral anesthetic that can be adminstered by a dart and will knock a human out for hours? I'm researching a novel. Is there a general anesthetic that can be adminstered by a dart and will knock a human out for hours? If so, what is it? How quick would it take effect? Would it have to be intraveneous and / or intramuscular? What would be the dangers / side effects?
Answer: Are you planning a Date Rape or something?
Question: Is Anesthetic the only way to cut pet rats overgrown teeth? I have a 1 1/2 year old rat with a tumor on the side of her face and she has malocclusion. Her teeth are overgrown and she is unable to eat hard food so i have been feeding her mushed baby food. I rang my local vet and they said they will only cut her teeth while she is under anesthetic. Is that the only way it can be done? I do not want to cut them myself nor put her under anesthetic.
Answer: They don't need it but it is safer for the rat and vet. Here are some links about it-

Question: What anesthetic do they use for the removal of wisdom teeth? my dentist told me what it was, and i remember it was either vicodin or valium. they give it to you via IV. but which one of these anesthetics do they use? because to be honest, it kinda scares me a bit, knowing that both these drugs are also sold on the street...
my procedure is on august 3rd, and i just want to get familiar with the anesthetic, because i'm nervous about it.
i'm from canada, so it might be a little different than in the USA.
Answer: Neither Vicodin or Valium are anesthetics. Valium is an anti-anxiety medication and Vicodin is a pain medication. I don’t think they will be using Vicodin in your IV. Valium may be used with other medications to help you relax. Regardless of what they use, the doctor administering the drugs certainly did not get them off of the “streets”. I would relax and realize that you are in good and safe hands, these doctors are highly trained in anesthesiology or they would not be licensed. Hope this helps.
Question: Is it possible to get a tattoo while under an anesthetic? I was just wondering if it was possible to get a tattoo while you're out cold under an anesthetic like the ones you get at a hospital before surgery or something so you don't feel anything? Because I know there a lot of people who want tattoos but are so scared of needles (I'm one of them) so would not be able to stand the pain. Is it possible? Sorry if this sounds stupid but I was just wondering.
Answer: Tattoo parlors aren't going to have any anesthetics available.. or the equipment.
They're not that bad. Just bring a friend to talk to while you're having it done. Or listen to music
Question: Is having a general anesthetic in early pregnancy harmful to the baby? I am sceduled to undergo a small operation on my knee on the 22nd of january. But my boyfriend and i have been TTC and i ovulated around friday-saturday last week and we had sex both those days. So if i am pregnant will it be to early to tell by the 22nd? And if so will the anesthetic harm the baby?? Please help, my surgeon where i am having the operation lives in another town so i cant ask him about it.
Answer: General anesthesia is approved while you are pregnant. I had to ask my OB about it because I had to have a root canal while 6 mos pregnant. Good luck.
Question: How long should the local anesthetic last after ACL reconstruction? I had arthroscopic ACL reconstruction done yesterday morning. In addition to the general anesthetic, they also gave me a local once I was under. Today the bottom (distal) half of my knee to about 1/4 of the way down the front of my calf still has no sensation. Is this normal? It has now been 30 hours since the beginning of the surgery.
Answer: See the American Journal of Sports Medicine on Google. Your symptoms are quite normal.
Question: Is it OK to have local anesthetic for teeth treatment while pregnant? My dentist told me not to worry. They would make the anesthetic weaker and take the adrenalin out.
Just need to put a new crown on a tooth and cannot really wait longer because the gums get poor because of the temporary crown which is not good during the pregnancy. What can you tell me?
Answer: If you are concerned you can ask the Dr for a non-epinepherine anesthetic. It does not last as long, and you may need an additional shot during treatment, but it may ease your mind. This is what your Dr. Means when he says he will take the adrenalin out.
The concern would be in the vaso-constrictor (tightens blood vessels to keep the anesthetic in place) in the epinepherine, not in the actual anesthetic itself, which is just a mild pain killer in a very low dose.
However all the courses and literature that I have attended/read have all stated that the anesthetic (even with epinepherine) is fine during pregnancy.
Question: Would you recommend letting your kids that are fearful of shots use anesthetic creams that reduce the pain? My daughter (12) is extremely fearful of shots. She says she has bad dreams about shots at least once a week and thinks about it everyday, even thought her next checkup won't be until May 2008. Will anesthetic creams ease the pain, enough so that she won't fear shots anymore?
Answer: Give me a BREAK...the poor thing doesn't need a THERAPIST!!
Shots are not fun. Some hurt, some don't...it depends more on what is being injected than the skill of the nurse or doctor that is doing it. Kids are all fearful of shots...I have yet to have a patient that doesn't go bonkers at the sight of a needle. When I was a kid, I had to have three nurses hold me down just to get a finger-stick!!
Here are some things that may help...which I've used not only with my patients, but with my own daughter:
1. Bribery works wonders. Even if it's a promise of a new Barbie or a trip to the ice cream parlor, just that "happy thought" can make things easier for her.
2. Ask your doctor if it is possible to have a numbing medicine injected under the skin before the shot. Many hospitals nowadays use a small insulin needle to inject a tiny bead of Lidocaine (numbing medicine) just barely under the skin to ease the initial prick of the shot. It may seem contradictory, but it does help.
3. Bring an ice pack with you in a cooler to immediately put on the injection site after the shot is administered.
4. About 1/2 hour before her appointment, give her a dose of Motrin or Tylenol. It also helps to take the edge off a little bit.
You have a good idea with the topical anesthetic, but it won't help much. Like I said before...the "painful" part isn't so much the needle stick, but the introduction of a foreign fluid (most of which burn like crazy) into the muscle tissue.
She'll grow out of this eventually. My Mother finds it most amusing that I now am so comfortable with needles, I let nursing students practice their IV techniques on me!!
Best of luck to you both!
