Bends
Decompression sickness encountered with changes in pressure such as when scuba diving; (treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy)
Question: What are the bends in scuba diving and how do they relate to Scuba diving? What are the bends in scuba diving and how do they relate to Scuba diving? Please answer in a two or three paragraph response.
Answer: The bends are also known as decompression sickness and happens when you descend to depths too rapidly and your body struggles with the process of adjusting to the different environment under water. This allows for gas bubbles to to develop in the blood stream.
These gas bubbles occur when an ascent is made too quickly and the body cannot handle the speed at which the transition happens, which is why divers practice 'decompression stops' to prevent the process of decompression sickness. These bubbles which contain high levels of nitrogen then reach the divers lungs.
Question: Bends in a pipe slow down the flow of a liquid through it. Do bends in a wire reduce the electric current thro Bends in a pipe slow down the flow of a liquid through it. Do bends in a wire reduce the electric current through it? Explain.
Answer: The answer is yes as electrical currant is susceptible
to friction.
Question: How do I fix the bends/dents in a leather purse? I have a leather purse that was stored under something in the basement. Now it has a few shallow bends/dents on the leather. None of them pierce the leather or look severely bent. The leather is soft.
Is there a way I can lessen or fix the damage? Should I stuff the purse with tissue paper so that the bumps go away and put it in a steamy bathroom? (I can't think of what else to do...)
The basement is quite dry -- the purse is not musty at all, and it quite new.
Answer: Instead of using tissue paper, place crumbled newspaper in the purse and allow it to sit for several days. The newspaper will help remove any musty odors and absorb any excess moisture. Then gently wipe the exterior with liquid saddle soap (used on nurse's shoes) and polish with carnuba shoe wax. If the dents have not lessen, line it with tissue paper and place a bag of lentils between the tissue paper to help force the purse back into its original shape. DO NOT USE A STEAMY ROOM! This will cause the finish to be marred with white stains & will leave you with a bigger problem.
Question: What's the difference between an air embolism and "the bends" when referring to decompression illnesses? Hello, I'm doing a project in which I'm relating the gas laws of chemistry to SCUBA diving, and I'm instructed to do two separate panels on both "the bends" and air embolisms. I have completed the section on "the bends," but when researching air embolisms, I feel that the two are so similar that I am having a hard time differentiating between the two. I am not too familiar with decompression illnesses, so could someone of a better understanding please help me out?
Answer: The Bends, also known as Decompression Sickness or DCS is when bubbles become blocked somewhere, typically in joint such as an elbow or shoulder. Depending upon severity, this can be quite painful. Treatment involves recompression in a chamber to reduce the size of the bubbles. "Small" bubbles are normal occurrence due to diving, but when they become too large, you get "bent."
Embolism, on the other hand, is completely different. Air Embolism is a situation where when the breath is held, the lungs become over-expanded and rupture like a balloon. The air then proceeds past the heart and straight to the brain. Since there are no nerves in the lungs it it painless. But death comes in under a minute.
Question: What does the space- time fabric bend into when large mass or matter bends the space time curvature? It is suggested that large mass bends the space time curvature and higher the mass higher the effect . i want to know what does the space time fabric bend into considering there is nothing beyond the universe.
Answer: It is not really bending. That is just a happy image that is used to prop up our thought processes so that we can try to understand what the mathematics is telling us. It is rather like those pictures you see in quantum mechanics books that try to give you a picture of what is happening in the quantum world - a world of complex numbers that we cannot really picture.
What is happening is that the equations describing the various "metrics" of space and time no longer look the way they do when there is no mass present. The solutions to those equations give the impression that space has become curved or that the time "axis" is no longer orthogonal to the spacial axes. Remember that in general relativity the metric tensor is related to the "mass energy tensor" so effectively one determines the other.
Relativity itself really says nothing about "beyond the universe". These colourful expressions have been "bolted onto" relativity in the hope of making further progress (which to date has not shown much promise of being forthcoming).
The rubber sheet analogy of the previous answerer is a helpful picture but the problem is that it presupposes an independent gravity to pull the rolling ball down, whereas in relativity, the distortion of space IS the gravity. Also in reality, even if you had a distorted sheet that could affect the trajectory of a rolling ball, without presupposing gravity to cause the ball to roll, you cannot simulate the effect of gravity n a stationary ball. I'll leave you to figure that one out.

Question: What is that pain after you start lifting weights? When your arm bends? I have just started lifting weights and I am this huge pain in both arms where it bends, opposite the elbow?
I cannot bend it each arm past a certain point. I just bend my right arm past this point and the pain was enough hurt like mad and I heard a slight noise as if tearing some cloth.
Answer: Wow you may have torn a muscle...how many pounds did you start out with when lifting weights? Your supposed to gradually increase the weight, if you go straight for the really heavy stuff you could damage your muscles
Question: What is the best Harmonica book that helps you develop your single notes and bends? I need something like a good intermediate or advanced Harmonica Method book that emphasizes developing single notes and bends. Like Pares Scales for Harmonica or something like that. What is the best book for this? Or, what is the best way to practice this without a book - if that way is better?
Answer: It sounds silly but Harmonica for Dummies is an excellent book. I have bought many harmonica books in the past and this is by far the best. It is by Winslow Verxa. It also has helpful diagrams. It helped me develop bending notes, and I'm self taught.
Hope I helped,
Dan
Question: How does a train go round corners and bends on a track? Well this applies new trains and old style steam trains. If you just take a single carriage for example, if the wheels are made of metal and so is the track, how does it go around the bends in the metal track without the wheel scraping against it and becoming derailed?
Answer: Two different mechanisms are found here. On slow tight curves the wheel flanges press on the side of the rail and guide the wheels around the curve. This can be noisy and some areas have flange lubricators fitted to ease the friction. If the angle (ie. the truck length compared with the curve radius) is too tight then unfortunately there can be a de-railment. The wheels may be riding on the outside or the inside of the curve depending on the position of the driven wheels and the position along the train length.
On fast gentle curves the taper in the wheel tread guides the wheel set along so it remains more or less in the centre of the clearance between the rails. As it moves to either side the closer wheel runs on a slightly larger radius and hence moves ahead a tad swinging the axle back towards the centre. There's a lot of detail design here to make the wheels stable over a wide speed range
Question: What are the post mortem signs of the bends? I am doing a project for my anatomy class and my teacher wants us to concoct an autopsy report involving a weird death. (She's a little sick)
The weirder the death the more points I get. One of the ways I kill someone is from Decompression illness and since it is an autopsy report I need to know what a medical examiner would look for if someone died from the bends.
Answer: You die from the bends from having an air embolism in the lungs and or brain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decompressi…
Question: What is the name of the knee brace that bends by itself? I broke my leg. Now I attend pt. The physical therapist said that I may need to get a knee brace that bends the knee by itself. They want this because my knee may become too stiff too soon. I was wondering what the name of this brace is so I can do some research on it. Please help.
Answer: I've heard of these;; although I've only experienced use of a CPM or Biodex/Cybex passive machines;; you will have to contact your PT & find out his supplier because these are NOT prevalent;; he/she should have no problem sharing this info with you;; the CPM, forget cuz your insurance will not pay for it (not now);; the biodex or cybex, well, your PT facility would/could have these, but they are machines (huge), not something you can just throw in the back seat of your car;; you'll also need to contact your insurance & see if they even pay for this "dynamic" brace, then get a script from your doc...good luck, wish I could help more;; but there are no secrets if ya just ask;; contact your PT...
he/she MAY be telling you about common hinged braces, like Donjoy, that have adjustments you can make in range but these are gradually increased & set for a desired range (progressively);; just ask your PT for the specs on this....
Question: How can i do really deep bends on guitar without breaking a string? Like really deep bends. Like 5 or 6 note bends.
Answer: holy crap thats a big bend but youll probably need a thicker string gauge and you can drop tune but it could still be a little harder bending with thicker strings, anyways i say drop tune, it loosens the strings up a little...obviously...
Question: How do I show that water bends light ? I am doing a demonstration in my physics class about how water bends light. I was planning on poking a hole in a water bottle filled with water, then shining a laser light through the other side. Will the laser light go through and bend with the stream of water ? Do I have to hold the laser at a certain angle or spot ?
Answer: no.you have chosen the right experiment to prove the refraction of light.
hold the laser perpendicular to the bottle and then switch it on.
then your'e done.
Question: What can I do to fix toebox problem-where the shoe bends it just goes right in my toes? I bought a Huarache pair of nikes and I've got this problem whenever I'm driving fast the shoe bends just below the laces and the upper leather goes right into my toes. Now I've bought a new pair again(because except this I love em') and I'm thinking what to do so that this problem doesn't occur again. I'm thinking of making a crease before. What crease to make?
Should the crease be more to closer to the laces as it usually occurs or should it be more to the front end>?
Answer: Google it
Question: What is the effect of elbows (bends) in suction line of a centrifugal pump? It is a practice to minimise elbows(bends) in pump suction line. Due to some unavoidable site conditions, I have to introduce two elbows in a pump suction line. What will be the effect of the elbows in the performance of a centrifugal pump?
Answer: There are two concerns. One is the increased pressure drop in the suction line due to the elbows. This will reduce the net positive suction head available to the pump. That may or may not be a problem
The other is the physical orientation of the elbows. They could form a vapor trap if their orientation is wrong.
Question: How are fish not affected by "the bends" when they rise into a lower pressure? Some Divers get whats called the bends which is when Nitrogen ( under great pressure) Dissolves in the human body and enters the bloodstream
or other tissue, then when the Diver re-surfaces the Nitrogen becomes big again. Why doesn't this happen in fish?
Answer: Fish don't get bends, which relates to dissolved N2 coming out of solution when pressure is reduced as 1st answer states. (But note that the molecular makeup of H2O isn't responsible for the absence of N2, it's just that there is less dissolved N2 in the water.)
But fish get something similar because thay have an air-filled swim bladder which provide them with the buoyancy they need to remain stable at changing depths. The trouble is they can't adjust the air content of the swim bladder quickly enough to prevent expansion and either rupturing or disgorgement of the bladder when they are pulled up quickly. So when you catch a fish at depth you should work him upwards slowly if you plan catch-and-release. As a novice I had a fish disgorge his swim bladder when I pulled him up from about 30 feet depth, so it doesn't take much.
Question: Why is there a radio signal in the bends of a tunnel? When I travel through the Blackwall Tunnel on my way to work, my car radio goes off and no surprises there. But whenever I go round the sharp bends the signal comes back on for a few seconds. Why would this be?
Answer: Hah! Another Blackwall tunnel sufferer.
I have also noticed this, and put it down to ventilator shafts.
Have you also noticed that the southbound tunnel has a clear signal throughout its length? Could be due to materials used I suppose.
And don't start me off on Tidal Flows (or the absence of) , please!
Question: My penis bends to the right what should i do? So i've noticed recently that my penis bends to the right at a 90 degree angle, i try to straighten it back but it pings back in position. This onyl happens when i get an erection! (and by the way is it normal to have an erection for 5hours?)
Please help me!
Answer: To get an erection for 5 hours is not normal. You can call it dangerous. You can cause a permanent damage to your penis. If this happens, see a doctor without questions asked.
Under angle? Read here: http://www.teen-questions.com/banana-pen…
It describes what to do when you have a bent, curved or sideways pointing penis.
Gee, I'm good LOL
Question: What is the difference between a short shifter with two bends vs. one with only one bend? Short shifters reduce shift throw time i know. but what is the difference between a short shifter with one bend and one with two bends.. comfort? performance? etc
Answer: I would say comfort and just looks.
Question: Does the direction in which a boys penis bends, have any connection to his sexuality? Does the direction in which a boys penis bends, have any connection to his sexuality? why does a boys penis tend to curve - is it normal?
Answer: No.
Mine is straight as an arrow.
Question: what does it mean when sombody bends their ring finger against their forehead? What does it mean when somebody puts their ring finger up against their forehead and bends it towards you?
Answer: It doesn't mean anything. People are too eager to find meaning in senseless gestures. Chill!!
