Keratitis
Inflammation of the cornea
Question: Can you still wear contact lenses after your eyes are healed from Keratitis? I think I got Keratitis and I am going to check my eyes tomorrow but I was just wondering if you can still wear contact lenses after your eyes are healed from Keratits. If you have experienced Keratitis before, how long does it take to heal from it?
Thank you.
Answer: I haven't had Keratitis but I have had corneal abrasions from contact lenses, and I'll say that you should be very cautious about wearing lenses after that sort of eye injury. Even when the pain or inflammation stops, the cornea may still be repairing itself or might still remain sensitive to foreign objects like contacts.
You should eventually be able to wearing contact lenses. But you should definitely consult with a doctor before using contacts again.
Question: Can you wear contacts after having Acanthamoeba Keratitis? I have Acanthamoeba Keratitis. Has anyone ever had this and been able to wear contacts again, or have the Lasik surgery? I don't see as well with my glasses and really want to do something when this is all done and taken care of, but my doctors don't seem to think I will be able to.
Answer: You have AK and still have eyesight. Praise the good Lord for that. I don't know how you came about having AK but you do realize its a sight threatening condition right. You can wear contacts again after it resolves, but I guess the question is should you be wearing contacts again? People who get AK are usually highly non compliant contact lens users, if that's who you are then I don't know that you're doctor will be willing to prescribe you another set of contact lenses to save you from yourself. If you are not that person, once treated you should be able to go back to wearing lenses and have LASIK if you choose to do that, not immediately of course but after your course of drugs is over. hope this helps. Good luck to ya:)
Question: Why do people only get Acanthamoeba keratitis when they wear contacts? I've heard they can get it if they swim with their contacts in, but not if they don't wear their contacts. Also, do you only get it in the ocean, or can you get it in pools too?
Answer: it could be in the ocean, it could be in pools, but it the most probable in hot tubs b/c of the heat.
it does happen in patients who don't wear contacts but its improbable. its statistically more prevalent in contact lens wearers b/c:
1) when it gets under the lens the contact holds it onto the eye, vs "rinsing" away
and
2) most contact lens wearers have altered normal flora and slightly compromised epithelium (superficial punctate keratitis or "spk" is a common one)
Question: I currently have acanthamoeba keratitis. What treatments have worked for others? My cornea has become "toxic" from the eye drops being used and I'm in extreme pain. I am just wondering what has worked for others so I can discuss other options with my doctor.
Answer: Oh my God you must see an eye doctor or a primary doctor for that this is serious you can lose your sight they got special drops for this matter.
Question: What kind of doctor should I see for keratitis / ocular herpes? I never had a cold sore in my life. I got one, the sore turned into two sores, and I woke up this morning with swollen eyes. This is like, turning into a nightmare. I don't want to wait a week for a doctor's appointment just to find out what kind of doctor I should see. Is it a dermatologist? optometrist? something else? Thank you!
Answer: you need to see an opthalmalogist immediately. herpes in and around the eye is very serious and is only treated with IV acyclovir. this is a serious condition and needs to be addressed ASAP. in your case I would go to an emergency room first thing.
Question: Whats the difference between bacterial keratits and acanthamoeba keratitis?
Answer: They both seem a little scary but it seems the first is less sight threatening. The Doctors office is the best place to have this question answered.
Acanthamoeba keratitis can occur in patients of any age, sex or race, but mostly manifests in young, healthy adults. The list of risk factors is long: corneal foreign body, contact with non-sterile water, bullous keratopathy, neurotrophic keratopathy, herpes simplex keratitis, radial keratotomy, swimming and scuba diving, basement membrane dystrophy, contact lens wear and bacterial keratitis. Cases sometimes arise with no identifiable risk factors. Essentially, any event that disrupts the corneal epithelium is a potential risk factor for Acanthamoeba keratitis.
Bacterial keratitis is a sight-threatening process. A particular feature of bacterial keratitis is its rapid progression; corneal destruction may be complete in 24-48 hours with some of the more virulent bacteria. Corneal ulceration, stromal abscess formation, surrounding corneal edema, and anterior segment inflammation are characteristic of this disease.
Question: if you have gotten keratitis three times within two years should you be worried? can repeatedly getting keratitis cause problems for your eye?
Answer: Yes. It's typically caused by improper contact lens wear. You can have permanent eye damage, so find out what is causing it, and do everything you can to prevent it. If it's contacts, wear glasses every minute possible, instead of contacts. Always wash your hands when you touch them or your eyes and never, ever sleep in them. If you liv in a dusty are, you will need to decrease the amount of time you wear them.
Take care of yourself, your sight is precious.
Question: What are the symptons of fusarium keratitis?
Answer: Symptoms include unusual redness, eye pain, tearing, discharge, or sensitivity to light. These are the same symptoms as many eye infectons so see your opthalmologist or eye doctor for a definitive diagnosis.
Question: KERATITIS which is the significant contributor of the disease? Cold sores
Flu
Genital herpes
or PTB?
I am also "feeling" Cold Sores or Herpes either of the twho. but please CHOOSE ONE only and explain
Answer: is this multiple choice or something? There are several causes including both, cold sores and herpes simplex, could also be due to respiratory infection (as in pulmonary tuberculosis) u mentioned, besides theres several types of pathogens affecting this condition (viral or bacterial), keratitis are often due to contact lenses. Bust I guess most 'significant' contributor are the herpes :D
Luck!
Question: Bacterial keratitis from sleeping in contacts? So I accidentally slept with my contacts in and now have an eye infection :( I feel like an idiot! Anyway, I started the antibiotic ointement last Wednesday night and my eye doesn't seem to be getting better. My vision is blurry except right after I use artficial tear drops and there is no pain. I have a follow up appointment on Thursday. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this before and how long it took to clear up?
Answer: It may take a while to heal. Your vision is blurred because you have swelling and you are using the ointment. The ointment is the consistency of Vasoline, so you will be blurry. I would continue the meds. and keep your appointment with your doctor. you are lucky, usually things are much worse when you gets infections from sleeping in your lenses. We had a young patient who did this several years ago after being in a hot tub (which is horrible with contact lenses!!!) and the next day he had to have an emergency corneal transplant. Please be careful! :/
Question: Is anyone here an an acanthamoeba keratitis survivor? If anyone is or knows someone please let me know i would like to talk to someone wherever they are in their life please email me or let me know!!
Answer: Hi,
I also have acanthamoeba keratitis but I don't heard you will die from it.
I have medicated since 14 of april 2009. It will take several months to heal, chances are good if found early. They found mine in 14 days.
I'd like to discuss this with you, since you also have this kind of infection, in my right eye, blurry vision now :-(
Interested?
Email me,
Sincerely,
Johan
Question: Can Anyone Here Put traumatic keratitis/herpatic keratitis In Plain English?
Answer: From what I understand Traumatic Keratitis is when your cornea gets inflamed due to the fact that you scarred your cornea in an accident (or contacts) and bacteria got in so basically your immune system is fighting the bacteria in your eye. Cornea is the white part of your eye.
Herpatic Keratitis is when you have the STD Herpes, and the same thing happens but it is a sympton of the Herpes virus.
Question: my mother is suffering from keratitis in eyes, Eye surgeon prescribes anti-allergic drops, but of not much use. What treatment is available for keratitis, is there a permanent cure, she is non diabetic but hypertensive/58 years old.She is using ketotifen ophthalamic solution and previously used olopatadine eye drops. Are there some good eye drops availabe?
Answer: eyes are too precious to be treated online.
Question: why corticosteriods and antiinfective combinations are contraindicated in herpes simplex keratitis?
Answer: Steroids are contraindicated for epithelial or superficial hs keratitis and may worsen the condition. If the infection is deeper in the cornea, then steroids are indicated. Antibiotics do nothing.
Question: What part of the body does Keratitis affect?
Answer: What is keratitis? Keratitis (ker-ah-TEYE-tis) is an inflammation (swelling) of the cornea. The cornea is the thin, colorless covering in the front of the eye. It protects the iris (colored part of the eye) and pupil (opening of the eye where light passes through). Keratitis may be ulcerative (open sores) or non-ulcerative (no sores), and is commonly caused by an infection. It usually affects one eye but can sometimes affect both eyes. It is a serious problem that may result in loss of vision due to scarring of the cornea

Question: Keratitis and the eye drop help? So last week, saturday, I went for a check up for my eyes. After the check up, the opthalmologist said that I had Keratitis. He prescribed me some brand of eye drop. Now, my vision is clear and the redness is gone. But my eyes are still itchy sometimes. I just want to know, when can I stop using the eye drops? How should I know when to stop using it since the redness is gone?
Answer: It depends on the specific infection causing the keratitis. A "regular" bacterial keratitis probably doesn't need more than a week of treatment. My advice to you would be to talk to him on the phone and see what he suggests.
Question: What is Keratitis Punctata? I know it's some kind of disease that affects the eyes, and maybe something else i don't know. Does anyone know specifically what Keratitis Punctata does?
Answer: Keratitis Punctata:
any of various conditions characterized by keratic precipitates.
keratic precipitates:
cellular and fibrinous deposits on the posterior surface of the cornea, occurring after injury or iridocyclitis and giving an appearance of fine drops of dew
Question: What do you know about keratitis filamentosa, and how to treat it :) ? This is for my mother.
Thank you for your answers!! :)
Have a wonderful day!! :)
Answer: This is also known as "dry eyes", keratitis sicca, and keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
There is a treatment for it called, cyclosporine (Restasis).
I've attached a valid and reliable site you might want to review. It covers sxs, causes, txs, as well as simple lifestyle options:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dry-eyes/DS00463
EDIT: I think I messed up. You are referring to filamentary keratitis, yes?
Here's some info:
http://www.revoptom.com/handbook/oct02_sec3_4.htm
Depending on how severe it is, this can be treated by eliminating the filaments, N-acetylcysteine (Mucomyst), or even, high-water (~70%), soft bandage contact lens with prophylactic antibiotic drops bid-tid.
