Hematoma
A localized mass of blood under the skin; a common postoperative occurence that often resolves on its own or can be surgically corrected
Question: Hematoma?? How long do hematomas resulting due to faulty phlebotomy skills take before they disappear? And they do disappear without trace right?
Disclaimer: I am not being critical of anyone's skills! I am taking phlebotomy classes and the hematoma's just keep adding on with people practicing on each other so I was wondering how long it'll take for them to disappear afterwards!
Answer: A hematoma is just a buise like any other bruise, and can appear even with the most skillful of phlebotomists. Don't be so quick to jump all over your health care providers because you got a "wittle bwuise" when they were attempting to care for you.
Don't worry--it will go away. If you're so concerned about it, apply ice off and on after any sort of IV insertion or blood-draw. Some of us diligently donate our blood to save the lives of others, and recognize that bruises are just part of the deal, even with the best phlebotomists in the world. They clear up as quickly as any other bruise.
Question: How long does a hematoma take to appear in a dog's ear? I just noticed that my dog has a swelling on the inside of her ear flap. It's about 2-3 inches in diameter. I did a bit of research and I think it's a hematoma. Does anyone know how long this takes to appear (aka could it just have appeared this large in a couple hours)? Also, are there any ways of getting rid of it other than surgery?
Answer: Hematomas can FILL an entire ear in hours!
NO,nothing but physically draining the BLOOD will do.
I dunno how anybody can call nicking an ear "surgery".....ups the price,I guess.
Question: Can dogs develop an aural hematoma in both ears simultaneously? Last night when we got home we noticed that our dogs ears were not normal. I inspected them and they both appear to be swollen and very warm, particularly at the flap of her ear (she has "airplane" ears). I've checked online and came up with aural hematoma, but can this happen to both ears at once? I plan on taking her to the vet, but is this critical? Should I leave work?
Answer: It can if it's caused by head-shaking.
Question: After wisdom teeth extration a week ago, I deveopled a hematoma, any suggestions on how to get rid of it? My hematoma is located in my right cheeck, and happened 3 days post op. My DDS put me on antibiotics, and told me to follow up with him. It looks horrible and feels even worse. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it and/or make it feel better?
Answer: I assume it's a hematoma on the outer cheek, visible to others.
If so, cover it up with some heavy make-up (like Dermablend, it's called corrective make-up) and follow the dentist for the rest.
Question: What is the difference between a toe Hematoma and a toe Melanoma? I have a black spot on my left toe, inside, and outside the nail itself. I think it's from putting on shoes that are too tight, but I don't know if it's a hematoma or a melanoma (or if it's something else.) Thanks in advance.
Answer: Hematoma is a contained collection of blood commonly caused by some trauma. If you have it beneath your toenail, you would likely remember then injury that caused it. They usually get absorbed and disappear in a couple of weeks. A melanoma is a form of skin cancer. On the foot, when it occurs, it can and is often found beneath the toe nail. They continue to grow and can eventually spread if not surgically completely removed. A third possibility, more likely if your over 50 years old, is that it's not blood but rather a fungus under the nail - very common in later years, and it can be treated. If you're below 30, it's likely;y not a melanoma and you could wait a month. If your worries grow, then see a dermatologist (skin physician specialist.)
Question: Does weakness in a cat come from ear hematoma? It's really weird that she is acting like this. I have looked online on ear hematoma but none of the sypmtoms include low crouching and weak walking. We have to feed her by hand because she won't go to her bowl and we have to place her on the cat litter so that she can do her business. I am really worried about her. Can someone PLEASE help me?
I took her last Wednesday to the hospital where she was diagnosed. The thing is after that day up till now she has been acting like this... It cost 1000+ just for the surgery... And emergency visit is 100+... I want her to get better!!!
Answer: If you haven't seen or spoken with a vet, you need to do so soon. I don't know about ear hematoma but if a cat is showing weakness and signs of being sick, then a vet is is order. Good luck!
Can you work out something with the vet? A payment plan maybe? A follow up visit after surgery should be included in the price of the surgery. I really wish I could help more. Hope your kitty gets better.
Question: How to get rid of a LARGE hematoma after Cardiac Catheterization? My mother had a Cardiac Catherization done due to blood clots. Three days after the Catherization she felt a bump, the size of a grape, on her upper thigh. Two days later the bump grew to the size of a large melon. Any ideas on how to make the hematoma go away? Do you know if it's possible to drain even though she is on blood thinners?
Answer: This size of haematoma absolutely needs surgical drainage with possible closure of any possible leak.
You should not delay any more and you should take her straight back to the unit . With the size you described she may very well need a blood transfusion as well.
Best of Luck.

Question: How long does a hematoma last after having heart catheterization? I developed a very large hematoma on my upper thigh following a heart catheterization. It has been over three weeks, I have had one blood transfusion and am now on iron supplements. Nothing seems to be helping this thing go away. The doctors checked it and it is not an aneurysm, but I am still worried that it isn't healing quickly enough. Any thoughts?
Answer: A hematoma is a collection of blood under the skin. Initially there is no bruising or color. Instead it first appears as a hard lump under the skin. Although the bleeding typically stops with the application of pressure, the bruise (the medical term is echymosis) will last a long time while the blood is resorbed by the body. In fact over time the area of echymosis will increase in size as the blood spreads out under the skin. Typically it will track down the thigh due to the effects of gravity. As the echymosis resolves the color will chnage from black and blue to yellow and green as it slowly fades away. Depending on the size of the original hematoma this can take up to 6 or 8 weeks.
Question: How long does it take for a Large thigh Hematoma to heal? An ATV fell on my right leg causing a Large hematoma on my thigh. It has been 3 months and the hematoma is still swollen and hard. Do I need to have it drained? Please advise.
An ATV fell on my right leg causing a Large hematoma on my thigh. It has been 3 months and the hematoma is still swollen and hard. Do I need to have it drained? The Doctor advised me to put heat on it every couple hours to help the blood to circulate. Can anyone give me advice?
Answer: It sounds like it needs some help to resolve. It is possible that an abscess has formed from the dead tissue, and requires treatment. It should be evaluated by a doctor.
Question: How does it take hematoma to form after surgery? How does it take hematoma to form after surgery? I had breast reduction surgery April 13th and the next day, I was complaining about burning under my armpit. I was wrapped up like a mummy with bandages, so there was no way for me to check that area. On the following Monday, I was getting dressed and noticed a small bruise in my arm pit. On Tuesday, the pain was so bad, I ripped off all the bandages, saw that the bruise was actually huge and fluid filled. Was the burning in my armpit on the 14th a sign that a hematoma was forming?
Answer: Not too sure, have you talked to your doctor about it?

Question: What's the worst that can happen if I leave aural hematoma untreated? What can happen if I leave my dog's aural hematoma alone?
So if I leave it untreated, she will have a cauliflower ear, and nothing worse?
The problem is that I can't take her to the vet and get help. She looks like she's suffering, and it pains me to see it.
Answer: hematoma's need to be seen by a vet. they generally need to be lanced & drained, but your vet is the only one who can tell you what it needs based on his exam.
the end result of the potential cauliflower ear isn't really the important part of the equation with this. like the other poster replied, it is quite painful. if you broke your ankle, the end result would be that you'd have a limp for the rest of your life. doesn't sound so bad if you just look at what it would eventually do to you...but it leaves out the fact that you'd be going thru some excrutiating pain until it healed on its own. your dog's hematoma is no different. it is painful and needs to be looked at.
in this recession, it is hard to find the extra money sometimes to do anything other than pay for absolute necessities in life. but you've taken on the responsibility to be his caretaker and that includes taking care of health problems when they arise. borrow the money, barter services with someone for it, ask your local shelter if they have a low-cost clinic, apply for care-credit thru the vet, ask if they'll break the payments up, do whatever it takes to find the money to bring him in.
no matter that in the end it may just be disfigurement...it is the here and now of ending his pain that is the important part.
Question: How long does it take for a hematoma to heal? I got kicked in calf muscle while training and now I have a hematoma. There is an upcoming martial arts tournament 7th August. Would it be healed by then?
Answer: A hematoma is a lot like a bruise. They both occur when blood escapes from the vessels and gets into the surrounding area. In the case of a hematoma, the blood pools under the skin.
You just have to wait until your body cleans everything up. I don't think it should take much longer than it takes for a regular contusion to heal.
Question: How long does an ear hematoma last in a cat??? I was just wondering how long an ear hematoma uaually lasts in a cat. My kitty molly has had hers for about a week now.
Answer: A hematoma in the ear is a collection of blood between the layers of the ear, caused by some kind of trauma. The blood will usually reabsorb, but the ear will never look the same. The majority of the ears that are allowed to "heal" on their own reoccur. The other down side to letting it heal naturally is that the ear takes on a crape paper effect. It is best to have it treated by a vet.
Question: How serious are the long term effects of a lower leg hematoma? When I was 16 I fell off of a porch and hit my shin on a concrete step. It ended up forming into a LARGE hematoma from my knee to my ankle. I went to a doctor and they had me on crutches for weeks and just wrapping it and using heat and ice. Well thats been 7 years ago and I get shooting pains and swelling in that area. Could there be any possibility that there are clots left behind or some other serious condition due to the past injury?
Answer: i was wondering the same thing i was playing football at school when i was 9 or 10 and someone fell on my thigh and i got a hematoma from it . i do once in a while get shooting pains there it also seems like i have somthing moving in my thigh but i dont know what it is ?? maybe you should get it looked at it again
Question: Is it normal to have some pain when a hematoma is dissolving into your system? I had a heart cath in September and ended up with a large hematoma that kept me bedridden for a month. It has since been aspirated and is shrinking, but lately I have noticed some soreness around the leg as the hematoma gets smaller. I have been a little more mobile over the last two weeks. It's not excrutiating, just aggrevating. Does this sound normal to anyone out there?
Answer: Hematomas are very painful. It well get sore and migrate as it goes away. If you are still having pain you should check with the doctor to make sure it is just a hematoma and not anything further. There are other complications that could cause pain.
Question: how much does hematoma treatment cost for dogs? my english bull terrier has a hematoma and i am planning to take him to the vets. i just wondered how much it would cost to treat him.
Answer: Just ask your vet. You have a vet since you have a dog, right?
Question: My dog has an ear hematoma, how much will it cost to fix? We've been fortunate to go through this dog's life without any kind of major vet bills. Through all the descriptions I've read, I'm sure he has an ear hematoma that the "travelling" vet will look at tomorrow. I've read so many different treatments. To treat or not to treat... Money is an issue, how much will it cost me?
Answer: You absolutely have to treat the underlying yeast infection that caused the head-shaking if that is the cause. Treatment of the hematoma itself is minor if the vet is conservative. They just give pain killers and use a steroid to take down the swelling. The surgery is not necessary. I read about vets pushing it often, but it is not necessary. Hematomas heal in about a month on their own if you treat the underlying infection.
If the hematoma was caused by a bite from another dog in play or fighting, you will have to have some antibiotics too. You are looking at less than two hundred dollars for everything if your vet treats it with painkillers/steroids/antibiotics. If your vet pushes surgery, and you agree, then you are talking over 500.
Question: my dog might have aural hematoma, what can be done and what will it cost? i think he has it because his ear lobe is swollen like on the google pictures for aural hematoma. if he does have this what can be done? and if a vet does it how much could it cost? is there anything i can do at home?
Answer: Yes totally agree. I am a vet nurse and seen quite a few of these. Surgery is necessary to correct it, the ear will have stitches placed randomly over the flap once blood is drained (mattress stitches) they are called as the ear flap looks like a patchwork quilt when it's done! Sometimes they need elizabethan collars on after to stop the dog scratching the stitches out. Just a piece a advice, this problem can reoccur if the dog has common ear infections as the injury often results from the dog scratching at the ears from itchiness, then a blood vessel/s burst causing the haematoma. So keep up with ear cleaners to make sure the ears stay in a healthy state and best of luck to you both! Oh depending on the severity- could be couple of hundred dollars but hey that's the joy of having pets right?!
