Collagen
The major protein of connective tissue that makes up the foundation of skin and other tissues; used as an injectable filler to temporarily plump depressed areas or augment deficient areas of the skin
Question: Collagen??? I've heard people use the word "collagen" in conversation, like "I need collagen" (a girl said this to me). I know what collagen actually is, but what's the meaning of it?
Answer: I think she was referring to wanting a collagen injection. That would be a procedure where collagen is injected, thereby plumping up her lips to enhance their sensuality.
Question: What are some good ways to boost collagen production in the skin? Is there any way I can boost the collagen production in my skin without undergoing expensive procedures or using skin creams with collagen in them?
I don't want to use creams with collagen, because collagen is an animal byproduct.
Answer: The only way I know of without expensive procedures or collagen creams is to use retin-a. Retin-a is known to boost collagen production by 80% in the first year of use. After that, I am not sure.
Question: At what age should I start taking collagen supplements? Collagen supplements help the skin maintain its elasticity, therefore reducing aging effects on skin. I'm 15, therefore my skin still has big amounts of collagen. At what age would it be appropriate to start taking collagen supplements?
Answer: Natural collagen production decreases when we reach our 20s. From then, we can start taking collagen supplements.
Question: How long should one take collagen supplements for beautiful, soft skin with no aged looks? I am 31. My face looks aged, my skin lost its radiance. so I started taking collagen supplements (DHC collagen) since two days. Can the soft and radiant skin can be obtained using this?
Answer: Who Knows? Who Knows?
I know what treatment quite dramatically did that for me and many others on Answers who have used it. It's the best proven safe and natural way.
I had so many severe skin conditions that would not respond to medicines and that lead me to experiment with natural, safe remedies. These not only healed the conditions but gave me an unbelievably flawless, healthy, young looking, vibrant skin so that I am often thought to be countless years younger. To maintain healthiness of skin and keep it young looking there is no better or safer way then thoroughly massaging with essential oils. They naturally benefit skin in countless ways. They feed skin essential beneficial nutrients. Thoroughly massage into skin and you will see marked results even in one day. Massaging quite vigorously is even better for skin tightening and giving you a vibrant, glowing and blemish fee skin. Don't be afraid of doing it vigorously. If done right it is only beneficial as many users on Answers will testify(see my B.A.'s) There is no pulling or stretching of skin as you have to tighten face muscles in order to tighten or flex skin in the part being massaged and in doing so it actually exercises and conditions many of underlying face (and some neck) muscles - thus combating aging and weakening of muscles that eventually leads to sagging and wrinkling and lines. Vigorous massage is best done by using a forward and back motion using finger tips and front and sides of fingers. Circular motion is less effective. In just a few days skin will visibly tighten, look and feel smoother and have a healthy glow . I promise you that it can to totally revitalize and rejuvenate skin and face. Try it - you will be happy that you did!

Question: How can you increase collagen growth to prevent wrinkles? This is what I think from the information I have found, but I want for someone educated, to confirm these.
-By getting rid of ruined collagen and increasing production of collagen?
-How? By applying retinoid containing products to the skin and sunscreen to prevent further damage of collagen? How can you increase collagen growth to prevent wrinkles?
How can we block aging process in skin? By getting rid of ruined collagen and increasing production of collagen?
And you can add more information or if you have any thoughts on what I have put
Answer: It would be simpler if you had asked how best to prevent and how best to remove wrinkles.
My years of experimentation/research taught me that these were the simplest, the best, and most effective treatments.
Much of skin aging is a result of what we put on the face. So many skincare products, cleansers, moisturizers, contain harmful, skin irritating, skin aging ingredients. Many such products have been removed from market, notably in France, as they pose great risks of causing acne and skin cancer.
PLEASE SEE informative sites below #####
Too frequent, too thorough cleaning, harms and ages skin. Massage with pure natural oils - olive, almond and cypress feed skin many nurturing nutrients that ward off aging and wrinkling. It is best to quite vigorously massage into skin as that exercises/conditions face muscles and thus combats their weakening which results in loss of skin tightness, then sagging, leading to wrinkles. It will very much tighten and firm skin.
See my other answers for info. how to massage to reduce specific wrinkles and how to regain a considerably younger looking face.
Avoid skin harm from high SPF sunscreens by applying on top of oil which acts as a barrier to sunscreen toxins. Surprisingly, it makes them more effective. I am often in intense sun for hours at a time and with just one application of an spf 15, I never burn nor even tan**

Question: Will an aloe vera and collagen drink do my skin good? There is a drink in the supermarket which claims to have natural aloe vera bits, 500 mg of collagen, vitamin e, and 200 mg l-carnitine in every 350ml bottle. They say its really good, but is it safe to drink and will it be good on my skin?
Answer: I will tell a little about the Aloe Vera that I use.
Aloe-Vera-Benefits the skin. When used on the skin, Aloe Vera has the ability to penetrate the deepest body tissues, some seven layers deep, unlike most lotions, liquid substances and water that penetrates only two layers of the skin.
It has been proven by research that the Aloe-Vera-Benefits comes from its active ingredients. Aloe Vera has over 75 known active ingredients that include: Vitamins, Mineral, Enzymes, Sugars, Anthraquinones, or Phenolic compounds, Sterols, Amino Acids that perform specific functions in the human body.

Question: What medicine can I take to stimulate collagen production? What medicine (or pharmaceutical products such as dietary supplements) can I take to stimulate collagen production in depressed scars?
Answer: There isn't one known, at this time.
Getting an adequate supply of protein in your diet (good quality protein) will provide the necessary building blocks.
It's not going to do diddly for the depressed scars. Those are the product of a normal reparative process that didn't quite get the tissue back to normal. You might consider seeing if a plastic surgeon will inject a little collagen in the area, if it's cosmetically embarassing, but I'm toting a pretty significant number of scars, most of 'em covered by hair or clothing, and the visible ones, no one seems to notice.
Question: How does Avocado Oil increase the amount of collagen in the lips? What is with Avocado oil that it increases the amount of collagen in the lips and how does it increase?
Answer: well it makes lips more kissable and plump.
Question: Do lotions with collagen and Elastin really help your skin? Do body and face lotions with these things really make a difference in your skin, or is topical application not enough? Is the collagen absorbed through your skin?
Answer: Yes and no. Yes, it will absorb, but the product that you are using it needs to be a highly concentrated form. And its expensive. So if you buy something is cheap...most likely it will be the 40th ingredient in it and not concentrated.
The best thing for collagen, vitamin C serum. That stimulates your own collagen in the skin.
Question: What kind of school do you go to for collagen or botox injections? I understand that only doctors can administer botox, what about collagen? Are there any other plastic surgery type jobs that dont require so much education? Im very interested in the beauty industry, but not interested in going to cosmetology school for hair or nails. Thanks :)
Answer: you can join any beauty clinic as a assistant
Question: Do vibrations from a machine help the skin on the face help producer collagen and correct wrinkles? I am wondering if a device that vibrates the skin on the face is a good thing to help produce collagen, and to correct wrinkles. Should we vibrate the skin? Maybe massaging the skin on the face helps create collagen.
Would love opinions. Thanks.
Answer: Yes it does help the more vibrashon the more it helps your skin it helps by vibrateing cells and the sells repair your body
Question: How to maintain healthy collagen between joints? Are there vitamins or something that I can take to maintain or even better the collagen in between my joints?
I'm curious because of my knees. Every time I squat or bend at the knees, I hear this slight "crunching" in them. They don't hurt or anything, but I want to keep them healthy.
Suggestions?
Answer: You've asked the right question, which is how to maintain. Collagen is a building block of the cartilage in your joints, and as cartilage is almost a vascular (has little blood supply) damage and recovery to it can be very tardy and slow.
A healthy well balanced diet with "healthy" oils such as fish liver oil etc., and regular exercises to keep the joints moving is a good way of maintaining good joints.
Regarding the clicking/crunching in your knees, these are quite normal and my self have them. They are mostly due to hyper-extension/hyper-flexion of the knee (meaning movement that pushes the boundaries of movement within the joint).
Question: Is there a way to get rid of collagen fibers but not calcium in chicken bone experiment? That classic elementary school science fair project--you put the chicken bone in vinegar and it ends up all bendy after a week or so. It works because the vinegar gets rid of the calcium salts, but leaves the collagen fibers in the bone... Making the bone bendy.
Anyhow, I was wondering if there was a way to remove some of the collagen fibers, but leave the calcium salts to make a brittle bone? Just curious... ;)
Thanks!
Answer: If you look around online, there are a few companies that sell collagenase, an enzyme that specifically breaks down collagen. You might want to include some trypsin in the mix too, to break down any non-collagen protein that may be in there (or, rather, alternate between trypsin and collagenase incubations, otherwise the trypsin will probably begin to digest the collagenase).
The trick would be to get the collagenase inside the bone itself, so it doesn't just digest the collagen near the surface. You might want to try a long incubation on a rocker. Trypsin and collagenase aren't too expensive, and you can probably find some at Sigma-Aldrich or a similar company.
Question: Is there any structural difference between human and animal collagen fibrils? I have a small piece of fossil. I wish to ascertain whether it was human or animal bone. Under SEM, I saw a lot of collagen in the fossil. Could I use SEM and collagen to identify the species of the fossil?
I did try to extract DNA and osteocalcin, but failed, because the protein came out in a big mass that wouldn't disintegrate even after I had boiled it in water for ten minutes. Does anyone know how to separate the sold mass of protein? I suspect that the fossil tissue has been "fixed" with formalin. Is there any way to break up the cross links formed by formalin without damaging cell organettes?
Answer: if you have access to SEM you might have access to dna sequencing tools. If you cannot tell what species you have by tissue stucture then you might want to try molecular tests. as for collagen, it is ubiquitously found in all animal tissue. I do not think that you are going to be able to find out what you have by collagen stucture.
extract DNA if you can. select a gene that has been studied heavily accross many different organisms.
clone it.
sequence it
compare to sequences from many organisms.
something could match.
compare sequences by getting them from NCBI or ensembl gene browser.
find software in internet that lets you compare sequences. NCBI has this. much faster than the eye method
have fun cause this will take a while.
are you trying to speciate? do you know the genus?
Question: Does anyone know about how much collagen injections are for making the lips more plump? I want to get my lips injected with whatever they use, I think it's collagen? Because my lips are so freakin thin,,, but I don't know about how much I should save or how often I need to get them injected.
Answer: Before an injection I suggest using cosmetics. If you'll be happy with the results then you can have an injection. And you don't need to pay too much for this little experiment, if you have 19,95 US you can try this: http://www.cushylips.com/?aid=414473
Question: Botox or collagen injections to correct cleft chin? I have done some basic research online about Botox and collagen injections. Both seem to be relatively safe with few possible complications. I am interested in correcting a mild cleft chin without surgery. Are Botox or collagen injections suitable to temporarily treat a cleft chin?
I couldn't find any mention online of cleft chins being corrected with either Botox or collagen injections. I understand the correction would be temporary, and that's okay. Does anyone know if this is even possible?
Answer: I doubt this. A cleft chin may be treated with an implant, possibly fat injections.
Question: What is collagen and why does it react to heat? I understand there is a procedure that uses radio frequency to heat up the dermis from inside out and tighten collgane fibers. But why does collagen react this way..I would have thought heat damages it.
If heat is GOOD for collagen...then does a fever (general increase in body temperature) also lead to collagen tightening or being produced more???
