Entropion
The inversion or turning in of the lower eyeld, causing the lases to rub against the eyeball
Question: Entropion? I have an 11 week old puppy with entropion in her eyes. I am applying ointment to her eyes as prescribed by her vet. Does anyone have any suggestions on things I may try to get this to correct itself so she doesn't have to undergo surgery?
Answer: It usually cant be corrected with out surgery! It is the only perment way to correct rolling eye lids. It is very irritating to the pup or dogs eyes and can cause perment damage if not corrected quickly.
This will explain it to you:

I hope this helps.
Question: My puppy may need to have surgery to correct entropion. Has anyone had to pay for this? How much is it? My Puppy - Koda Bear has had an eye injury that may have been caused by entropion. I want to know if anyone knows how much it costs and if you have any suggestions...Thanks!
Answer: Hi there, it completly depends on the vet and where you live. we bought a male for our breeding program the same day i took him to the vet to check his eye as it didnt look as good as id have liked and he had severe entropion and an ulcer on his eye , the vet wasnt our normal vet as they are 2hrs away. she told us it would cost $2000 for the surgey not including the meds after the surgery. anyways we took him too our normal vet and it cost us $500 but again we have a deal with our vet as all our pups and clients our sent to him. needless to say we did neuter our male as well too try to keep the entropian out of the bloodlines. (for our breed its important to not breed it back into them) he has had another surgury since the first one as he is very heavily wrinkled and this time the surgery was $100 .. so it really depends on the vet most likly costing $1000-$2000. have you talked to the breeder about covering this cost? if it was one of my pups i would pay for this surgery. it is very painful for the puppy , also are you sure he needs the surgery and not eye tacking? if its eye tacking some vets will only charge $100 and give you a medication for his eye too treat the injury. alot of vets with give you medication for the pain as it is very painful.
Question: Anyone know what the cost is for entropion surgery for and english bulldog? My vet suggested Fla. Veterinary Specialists, but I read some lousy reviews and high costs for them. Any help with a good opthamologist ? And ball park figure on the cost?
Answer: $0. If you used a responsible Bulldog (no English) breeder, then it would be covered under your health guarantee as it's a genetic condition that's passed on from a parent to its offspring.
You did use a responsible breeder with such a health guarantee, right??
Info on the problem: http://www.animaleyecare.net/diseases/ca…
Reviews on the net about medical/veterinary professionals should always be taken with a grain of salt. Most who post on these sites
1. Have no idea what they are talking about
2. Have an axe to grind
3. Are only there to complain. Good outcomes don't usually cause owners to run to angel's list as quickly as the bad ones
Ask your vet for a referral to another vet who does the surgery if you don't want to use FVS. Depending on where you live and which vet you choose, it could be $200 or it could be $2000.

Sue, You can feel insulted until the cows come home. Fact of the matter is that in today's day & age, it's a GENETIC disease, for the most part. I'm seriously doubting that you used a "responsible" breeder. I'm guessing it was some newspaper ad and a breeder who didn't do any health testing. If the breeder you used bred only CERF dogs, dogs that were CERF approved for 3-5 generations, then you got a fluke. The breeder should have offered to pay for the problem.
Sue, did you bother to read the link I gave you? It clearly states that it's an inherited condition.
Question: Will bacterial eye drops help, if the cause of the corneal ulcers is entropion? My puppy keep his eyes closed, and scratches at it. The vet tells me it is a corneal ulcer. He is a shar pie X mastif. Do the bacterial eye drops help if the cause of the ulcer is entropion? If the cause bacterial, and then self inflicted. How long do you think it will take to heal? I can assume a cone is required during the healing process?
Thanks
Matthew
Answer: Entropion is when the eyelid rolls inward and touches the surface of the eyeball (the surface of the cornea to be exact) and this is causing irritation to the surface of the cornea leading to an ulcer. If there is a bacterial infection these drops will help get rid of the bacteria, but they will do nothing to prevent further irritation of the cornea. The ulcers will continue to return and they will continue to get infected by bacteria. You dog need the entropion fixed (the eyelid needs to be rolled outward) with a surgical process. There are also many diseases of the eye that are caused by chronic irritation. These could result if this process goes on. Also, a superficial corneal ulcer if infected can turn into a huge mess and essentially eat through the entire cornea by certain enzymes. Please get a second opinion from another vet.
Question: How much is entropion surgery for a chow chow (for both eyes) in toronto? he's 3 1/2 yrs. also, how much is a severe patella loxation surgery cost approx. for 1 leg?
thanks
Answer: if you own this dog/paid for it... then you got ripped off, now if you got it from a shelter or saved it from being put down wonderful. But with both of those things you are looking at some serious cash!! and it's necessary to get done, at least the eyes are. keeping the dog a healthy size will help keep the patella under control (as this kind of surgery your looking at thousands). but on average all around the world i'd say your looking at about 500 if dog is in all around good health
Question: How much does entropion surgery usually cost?
Answer: I would say around 675 doallars to 700 not real sure but I know that its in that range
Question: I am looking for a vet in the DC area that specializes in entropion surgery on dogs.? Specifically, I have a 6 year old Rottweiler and they told me that the surgery wasn't necessary in the past. Now it appears that the eyelid is starting to bother her and I want to get it fixed immediately before it causes any damage.
I refuse to use my normal vet on this as I feel like I can trust them with the minor things, but want someone with some references because all of the risks involved with any type of surgery.
Answer: I doubt if your vet would want to do this op, consequently he will be happy to refer you. In any event most specialists only take on a patient if it is referred.
Ask your vet for the names of specialists and he will arrange a consultation.
Question: Will Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment help with Entropion? My St. Bernard has Entropion, But I really can't afford a $1,000 plus surgery. Will using this Ointment help him?
Answer: Unfortunately, no it will not. It may help to 'lubricate' the eye causing a tad bit less irritation, but he does need the surgery.
Have you talked to your vet about payment plans?? Have you applied to care credit?? This boy needs the surgery, Entropion is VERY uncomfortable for dogs.
Question: how much does it cost to fix entropion in south florida? i have a 8 year old femal rottie..she has it in both eyes i think..i would like to kno about how much it shuld cost so can start saving up now for the surgery..thnx
Answer: Not sure about Florida, but here in DC it runs anywhere from $1000-$1800.
Question: Why is snellen's operation for treatment of entropion obsolete?
Answer: we have better newer techniques
Question: can an injury to my dog's eye mimic entropion? My rottweiller came home from a run with a watery eye. I watched it for a few days thinking he may have ran into some brush or scratched it some how. It was tearing but there was no crusty mucus. I took him to the vet and was told he had entropion and would need surgery.
Answer: Unfortunately, those are one of the health issues facing the Rottweiler breed. Eyes, Hips, Elbows, and Heart.
Most likely your dog has had the problem for a while, but it just started to manifest itself.
And, yes, it is my understanding it does require surgery. It will not go away on its own.
Sorry about that. And, a quesion, how old is your Rottweiler?? In order to try to help prevent hip problems, I hope he is 18+ months old. If he is not, than you should not be taking him for a run. Too much heavy pounding on muscles and bones that are not "set" can cause major hip problems.
Question: Does anyone know how much Entropion surgery for one eye will cost for my puppy? ? Lower eye lid - just on one eye.
Mass. area (i'm not sure if cost is different depending on different locations and vet costs, etc.)
Also, if anyone else has encountered this problem and any advice you can give - I've never dealt with this before
***Also, the reason why I'm asking is because I saw a specialist for him and the cost was over $800.00 for the surgery, however, after googling it i see there's people who were charges significantly less. I didn't know if I was being overcharged.
Answer: IDK, but you should have your vet refer you to a canine ophthalmologist. Hopefully your health guarantee that came with the pup will help cover some of the expense.
Question: entropion surgery cost please? My dog needs entropion surgery. shes an Eurasier (aka wolf chow) can you tell me how much it costs? in or around a simi valley California area. I'm 14 and I'm doing everything possible to get some money for my new dog.(recycling, working for family, selling candy and drinks at school, neighborhood work ect.)
How much is it for a right eye-lower lid?
Answer: A vet would have to examine her eye and give an estimate.
My dad had to have an entorpic eyelid repaired on his Standard Poodle, and the vet did it for less than $100. However, I have heard of the srugury costing several hundred to fix.
Legally, your parents are the ones responsible for getting the dog its needed medical care. Since you are still a minor, the dog legally isnt "yours", it belongs to your parents.
Question: my dog has entropion..how much will it cost to fix??!? my dog has entropion. it was just one eye, but continued to the next just a couple of days ago!
they said a couple months ago that they would fix her eye during surgery while being fixed if necessary.
NOW its both eyes!!!
HOW MUCH DID IT COST FOR YOU TO FIX?!
I live in MA!
upsidedown chaos- thanks!
upsidedown chaos- thanks!
Answer: I edited my answer on your previous Entropion question
Question: Can you please explain what these health concerns mean? • Minor concerns: patellar luxation, KCS, entropion
I know what patellar luxation is, what is KCS & entropion?
• Occasionally seen: achondroplasia, epilepsy
What is anchondroplasia & epilepsy?
• Note: The breed is sensitive to anesthesia and does not tolerate heat well. It is also prone to corneal abrasions.
What is corneal abrasions & anesthesia?
The dog breed is a japanese Chin.
Answer: sounds like you have great answers so far,
what kind of breed are you looking for?
IS it a chinese shar pei?
because I want a chinese shar pei, but they have too many health problems. they are my favorite dog of all time!
OR A BULL DOG
Question: Entropion surgery for dogs? My Dobie pup has had some eye irritation of late. It has been diagnosed as entropian. Two vets have looked at her and suggested we consider having the condition rectified surgically when she is full grown as it may correct itself as she grows.
I have read quite a bit on the interenet regarding the condition but I would like some input from some dog owners...
a) does anyone have a dog with entropian?
b) did they outgrow it?
c) or did you have the surgery and how did it turn out?
I thought I had done my research -the parents had been genetically tested for von willebrand, displaysia and hypothyroidism. I did not see anything about the eyes - ugh.
However she is not being bred - she was spayed today and is sleeping like a baby right now.
Answer: I have had 2 dog with it over the years. One dog outgrew it. It was a very mild case to begin with. The other had surgery. It went well and was totally resolved.
Which ever outcome, the dog should NOT be used for breeding, as it is a heredity condition.
Breeders do not always foot the bill on this. Check with yours and see.

I guess Dobies are supposed to be CERF cleared. You may have a leg to stand on with the breeder. Hopefully, you could get some help if surgery is required.
Question: Are pugs more likely to have health complications then other dog breeds? I'd really like to get a pug, but some websites say they are more prone to health complications such as like Entropion, obesity, heatstroke, granulomatous meningoencephalitis, and other things. Pug owners, is this true?
Answer: Pugs, like other small domestic dogs do have health complications that are not as prevalent in other breeds.
I own two pugs of my own, and work as a veterinary assistant while I go to school.
I can tell you for certain that pugs, having been bred for generations for the same characteristics suffer frequently from a narrow trachea. Keep in mind I say frequently because it is the main problem we see happening time and time again, not because the hospital is full of nothing but pugs.
We usually will see it once every month or so. I am not by any means saying we see a lot of pugs. It is just when they do come in for treatment, it is a fairly good chance the narrow / collapsed trachea is the culprit.
This can cause breathing problems. A medication called theophylline (or another bronchial dialator) is usually prescribed to treat the symptoms, and is from what i've seen fairly effective.
To make a long story short, pugs do not have any more health problems then any other dog breed.
German shepards, due to their size suffer from hip dysplasia while daushounds have legs that are disproportionate to the rest of their body. Pomeranians very commonly have knees that pop out of their joints etc.
The list goes on! Most all dog breeds have some form or risk of complication associated with the breed, but don't let that put you off owning a pug!
Every dog has problems, but there is no reason to believe pugs have more of them.
If you have any other concerns, I would recommend talking to a veterinarian.
Question: what kind of an eye doctor should I see? I have what I think is Entropion eye, or eyelid retraction. What kind of eye specialist should I see for this?
Answer: ocular plastic ophthalmologist
Question: What does it cost to keep a Japanese Chin? The Japanese Chin seems to be the most compatible dog for me. I don't know what a patellar luxation, KCS or entropion mentioned are. Are these part and parcel of the breed or only some of the dogs?
What are the monthly costs attached to this darling little pup?
Answer: There aren't that many problems that Chins can face. When you get into the larger breed, that is when the problems arise. They have no major concerns, unlike bigger dogs (which can have joint and other problems) but they do have a bunch of minor concerns that you listed. There's also achondroplasia, and of course, epilepsy. I've had three out of four dogs that had epilepsy but a seizure once every few months isn't major. Just holding a dog and petting them isn't that hard. They live to be fourteen though, which is quite good.
You need to watch out for their eyes. Like a pug, and any other breed which has large eyes, they can get harmed easily. My pug used to instigate fights and got her eye scratched twice before having it removed. A Japanese Chin is a lot more hyper than a pug, though, and can easily hurt itself. So just watch it.
A chin will /not/ cost you 3000. Pet stores sell them for 1400 or so (not saying you should buy from there. I hate pet stores. Just saying the price). Breeders normally charge from 800-1100. Anywhere in that range. 3000 is enough for three dogs. Maybe the person was talking about surgery costs; even so, the problem isn't a major concern.
Now, monthly costs? Not that much. It varies. You need a good bag of dog food. Before I knew about needing good dog food, I used to feed my dogs stuff like Purina. It's crap. You need stuff like Wellness, and make sure it's dry. It helps their teeth. That'll be expensive, but since the dog is small, it won't be much. It'll also keep the dog from shedding less, and alive longer.
You won't keep buying toys and collars each month. If you buy good stuff right away, it's fine.
You need frontline, so 10 dollars or so.
And treats... gotta get the treats. :) Ten-fifteen is good.
And plus, the dog only needs to go to a vet every year or so, or when hurt, so that won't be expensive.
Hope I helped. Sorry it's long winded.
Question: Entropion Operation? My friend has what appears to be an entropion and her doctor has recommended surgery. Has anyone had this and had surgery to correct it? And if so, can you tell me how it went and about your experience?
Thank you so much
Answer: i regret I haven't had that experience.
