Question: How soon is it safe to apply sunscreen to a new tattoo? I have had my tattoo for a week, and it is doing beautifully! I have diligently followed the aftercare instructions my artist provided. My question is pertaining the use of sunscreen. The tattoo has peeled and is now sort of grainy/dry, but very clean, to look at. I have NO plans to be in the sun directly with it (I do not lay out or roam the beach, etc.), but I would like to know if sunscreen over the tattoo is appropriate yet for times when I may *indirectly* be exposed to the sun. These might include gardening, being in the yard, playing with dogs, going for a walk, etc. The tattoo is on my inner wrist, so it's not "showing" all the time.
At this point, would a sunscreen be appropriate, or an irritant?
I purchased a Neutrogena SPF 30 stick of sunscreen that looks like a smaller version of a deodorant stick :), and I'm not sure if the ingredients would harm or fade, or irritate my freshly inked tattoo. Could anyone with experience advise on this, please? Thanks so much!
Answer: It only takes about a week (or 2 at the most) for your tattoo to heal. After that you should put sunblock on it if its going to be in direct sunlight, especially if it has color in it! I have 3 black and grey tattoos and i never put sunblock on them and they are fine, but I do know people that have color tattoos that fade real fast because they don't use sunblock. Either way, putting sunblock on your tattoos as long as they are healed is never a bad thing!
Question: What is the sunscreen that is white when caked on? Hi,
Most sunscreens today rub into the skin all the way (which is fine) But I am looking for the sunscreen that is white when applied to the nose or under the eyes. Surfers and volleyball players where it most often. I think it has zinc in it. What is it called? Where do I get it?
Thanks a lot.
Answer: It's zinc oxide. If you can't find zinc oxide in a bottle labeled "sunscreen" buy a tube of Desitin diaper rash cream for babies. It's the exact same stuff. The one and only ingredient in Desitin is none other than zinc oxide. The only thing different is the packaging.
I'm a surfer but I don't see surfers using it as much as they used to. Lifeguards still wear it a lot.
Question: Is their a difference between animal sunscreen and human sunscreen? I've got sunscreen for my pets but it's only SPF 15+ can I use human sunscreen?
It's for their noses, they've got very pink noses.
Answer: There are some sunscreens created specifically for pets, but using baby sunscreen is also an option. Most human sunscreens have ingestion warnings because the ingredients can be toxic if a child or dog ingests them, so if your pet is likely to lick it, look for a pet-specific sunscreen. One thing to remember about sunscreen is that you need to use plenty of it, and you should re-apply regularly during sun exposure. It is recommended to use at least 1 tablespoon of lotion or cream for each body area treated! Sunscreen should be re-applied every 4 to 6 hours during the brightest time of the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. While Veterinary Partner doesn’t normally mention specific pet products to avoid commercialism, there are so few pet sunscreens available that we will make an exception for pet sunscreens, which are much better for your dog and cat than human products. Question: What sunscreen offers the most protection near the equator? I am going backpacking in Costa Rica in a couple of weeks. I am extremely fair and burn in the sun we have here in Wisconsin! This will be my first exposure to the sun after a long winter, and I want to MAKE SURE I am super protected so I don't burn. I know I need to get a high SPF, but I'm wondering if anyone out there can recommend a great sunscreen brand that will work very well, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Answer: You should get a sunscreen with both a high UVA and UVB rating, that is a 4 star rating for UVA and 60+SPF for UVB. It should be applied frequently to all exposed areas and generously. One of the very best sunscreems is Ombrelle by L'Oreal...it is top quality. Neutrogena also makes a good sunscreen and less expensive. Hawaiian Tropic claims to have the highest spf protection. But if you want to ensure you get the best protection I would stick with the Ombrelle product line.
You also could use a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxideif you are allergic to sunscreen preparations. In addition there are now clothes and hats being sold which give some sunscreen protection...short and long sleeve shirts/blouses and slacks, jackets etc.
Good Luck

Question: How do you remove sunscreen smell from clothing? I use regular Tide detergent on the normal cycle in my washing machine, but I can not get the sunscreen smell out of my clothes. No matter what I do, they still smell like sunscreen. Especially the neckline of shirts. Does anyone have any suggestions how to get this smell out of my clothing so I don't smell like a beach bum when I wear these clothes again?
Answer: my husband is a chef and we have found that the only thing that takes the kitchen smell (he works at a seafood restaurant, btw) is Tide with Febreeze. i think you can get a Febreeze additive for the laundry, too. i do all of our laundry in Tide with Febreeze - and our clothes smell like fresh laundry. hope that helps.

Question: What can i use besides sunscreen to get a tan? I don't have sunscreen and I really want to go tanning in the sun tomorrow. Will any lotion do like Vaseline lotions? Or is there something besides sunscreen i can use to protect myself from getting sunburn?
Answer: Sunscreen doesn't actually help you tan, quite the opposite really.
Sunburns are, in essence, your skin literally burning--it causes serious damage that your body dislikes. Because your body dislikes this damage it will create more melanin in that area to defend itself incase you burn again. Tanning is simply your body protecting itself from becoming burned. I would recommend you not do it tomorrow.

Question: How long does sunscreen remain effective? I have a waterproof sunscreen from last summer that I wear in the pool. I have most of a bottle left. Would it still be good?
Answer: It should say on the bottle, side of the lid or stamped on the label. To get a factual answer ask in the chemist or pharmacist. (if it's the colour, smell and consistency as it was last year then it's probably good)
Question: What will the daily use of a good sunscreen do to my skin tone? My parents want me to use sunscreen everyday because they say that the sun harms your skin and causes cancer.I'm a 15 year old guy and I'm not really into using creams(sunscreen) in my skin but they want me to use it.I'm afraid that my skin will get lighter or my tan will fade because of me using the sunscreen.
Answer: I am a beauty therapist and see daily what peoples skin looks like when they don't take care of it and not using some sort of sunscreen long term will do damage to your skin.
Men as well as women need to protect themselves not just from the harmful rays all year round because of the chance of getting skin cancer but it does also help with the tone of the skin and helps against premature aging.
I know at your age you think "What ever" but in the long term you would be happy to have great looking skin without pigmentation marks and the girls would love it to as it shows that you take a pride in your appearance.
Your tan would be a bit lighter than in other parts of your body that you didn't apply suncreen but not majorally noticeable really in the long term.
Hope this helps.
