Hemangioma
A proliferative vascular lesion that originates from blood vessels
Question: hemangioma? I have had a hemangioma on my back on since birth and every time I go to the doctor they just say leave it alone. It is very painful when someone touches it or even if they just graze it. All of a sudden I have just been getting this really bad pain from it. In the mean time while scheduling an appointment with the doctor is there anything that can help with the pain. Advil or ice doesn't really help. Does anyone know of anything else?
Answer: I used to have a big one on my chest since birth (it was f-ing huge, like the size of a small fist), the doctors kept telling my mom that it will go away but it never did, i had it removed when i was 6 and i recomend it, I could imagine that it gets worse with age, so just get it done.
Question: What are the risks of hemangioma of the liver during pregnancy? Just recently I was told I may have hemangioma of the liver. I had an ultrasound which showed a leison a 2cm. The doctor recomended I have a CT, but I am currently 4months prenant. Well the doctor didn't give me much info about what I have He just said to come back after I have the baby. Well I've done my own research and I'm a little worried because I've read the it can grow when you pregnant and there is risks of rupture. Well I've had pain in my stomache since before I was pregant, and I guess my question is: Should I be concerned or trust the doctor and not worry till after I have the baby? Should I find another doctor? Is there any more information I should know or that any one else can tell me? Thanks
Answer: A lesion this small should present no problem to you or your little one....particularly if you never knew you had it because you had no symptoms.
The CT scan will just give the doctor a definite diagnosis. Your doctor is right, you really have nothing to worry about. However, if you don't trust or doctor or would just feel safer getting a second opinion, by all means do so.
In the meantime, here is a site that will back up what I have just told you.

Question: How do you treat a hemangioma? My ten month old niece has a mushroom capped shaped hemangioma under her right eye. She was treated with steroids so it wouldn't grow anymore, but it has not improved. What other options are there?
Answer: Its unlikely that anything further will be done.
Haemangiomas (also known as strawberry naevi) are entirely benign, and reasonably common. They typically fade away as the affected children grow, and usually by the age of four, or so, are completely gone.
Question: How can I get charitable contributions for the Hemangioma Foundation? My niece has a Hemangioma, (Vascular Birth Defect), on her nose the size of a walnut and it's growing larger towards her eye. I need tax deductible charitable contributions sent to the Hemangioma Foundation Chaeleston, South Carolina in my niece's name
Answer: Fundraisers, go to the town meetings and see if they will sponser a fundraiser for you. Write your local media. Good luck.
Question: Is a biopsy necessary to distinguish a hemangioma from cancer? If a person has a mass that shows up on an ultrasound, is it possible to identify, from that ultrasound, whether the mass is a hemangioma or a cancerous tumor? Thank you so much!
I meant it shows up on a cat scan, not an ultrasound. And mine is on my liver, too : ( I'm terrified of a biopsy
Answer: It nearly always is and on the rare occasion it is not the radiologist will say so.
Question: how is a hemangioma removed from the tip of the nose? my daughter is 11 with a hemangioma on the tip of her nose and is scheduled to have it removed. I am curious as to how they will do this and if any scars will be present.
Answer: We do Pulsed dye laser for that case ( not surgical because there will be much bleeding ). Hemangiomas are capillary malformation. PDL (the laser) will just target the veins. This will help control the growth of the lesion (if not resolved over time ) and will eventually decrease the size.No scarring if laser is done coz there will be no breaking of the skin. hope this helps. ;0 God bless!!
Question: Did anyone treat your childs hemangioma with steroid injections? Did it stop the growth? How many did it require? Did it make it look better?
My baby girl is 10 weeks old with a scalp hemangioma (its small) and got the injection. I'm hoping it will stop the growth. Anyone have experience with this?
Answer: yea
Question: Has anyone used propranolol for treating hemangioma? My kid's dermatologist just offered us to use propranolol to shrink the hemangioma and make the bump flatter. My kid is 16 months old and her hemangioma is compound strawberry and it is on her forehead. Has anyone have any experience of taking that? How long does it take to see the result? Have you experienced any side-effects? As Dr. said the hemangioma has stopped growing and it may start shrinking on its own. But we want to consider the option of medication as well. Thanks in advance for your help.
Answer: Most hemangiomas are just left alone since they often shrink without any intervention. Steroids are usually the medication of choice, although surgery and laser can help. Propranolol is used for severe hemangiomas. Since what your baby has is more of a superficial one, then I don't think you would need it, especially at this young age. Most hemangiomas go away in a few weeks to months.
You may also want to ask a second opinion from another doctor on the right treatment.
Question: Anyone out there have a child with hemangioma? My daughter is 8 months old and has hemangioma on her lip and I have had so many options on what to do and I would like to hear from anyone who has been through this before.
The options I have been given are steroids, plastic surgery, or leaving it alone and it might go away.
Only serious answers please. And thanks ahead of time.
The place has quit growing and has actually started to fill in with her skin color. It has got any bigger since October of last year.
Answer: My daughter's hemangioma started when she was 3 weeks old. Hers was on her left cheek and partially over her neck coinciding with strawberry marks over her face, neck and ear. She seen a pediatric surgeon and because of where her's was positioned surgery wasn't a very good option. She would have been paralyzed on that side of the face. It grew until she was around 18 months old ( got quite large!!) , then it stopped! Her specialist said it would shrink and that it would be unnoticeable by the time she started school. She is now 9 years old and the only time you can see it is sometimes in pictures and sometimes in the mirror. She started a new school this year and the teachers never noticed it until the school pictures came back!! Her strawberry marks are gone now and the bluish tinge to her skin there is also gone. Plastic surgery is an option for her still, but it is not recommended until she is done growing and that is only if she has loose skin where it was. I would hold off on any surgery, I am glad I did!! I know it's hard on you, but if it is not bothering your daughter I would leave it alone and let nature take it's course. The hardest part you will have is the inconsiderate people you will come across when you are out!! Believe me, I had many comments said right to my face about my daughter and also had children and parents pointing and staring at her. Good luck with any decision you make, but remember even though she has this she is still a beautiful little girl!! Who cares what strangers think!!!
Question: Does anyone else have a scar from a strawberry hemangioma? If so what have you done to make it less noticeable? I was born with a strawberry Hemangioma on my face and have had several surgeries to remove it then make the scar less noticeable. However, it still bothers me and I am interested to know if anyone else has had one of these on their face or something similar, and knows of any creams or make up that really fix it?? Please let me know!! Thanks.
Answer: my friend and her father and brother all have one.
im not really sure what you could do i guess just put some concealer and foundation on it. sorry im not much help but just wanted to let you know your not alone.
Question: My wife has a hemangioma and we are concern about having a baby? It is in the T5 location with moderate pain. She has had two MRIs with, all have said that there is no treatment recommended at the time. We should have it checked in 6-9 months. We would like to start trying to have a baby, but are holding off in fear of jeopardizing the baby's or my wife's health. What are the risks and recommended next steps? Hold off on the baby or go forward?
Answer: My first child had a hemangioma will my other children have hemangioma and is there anything I can do to prevent a hemangioma from developing?
For most families additional children born into a family where one child has a hemangioma is at no greater risk of having a hemangioma then the general population. The risk is not zero but no greater then anyone else. While there are a few isolated families with an extensive family history of hemangioma that have an occurrence rate of 50%, like flipping a coin this is extremely rare. 10% of all children are reported to have a hemangioma so it would it would be less then 1 in a million chance of having a second child with a hemangioma. There is nothing you can or can not do to prevent or cause a hemangioma from developing in your baby. Old wives tales used to include things like staying away from strawberries, nothing you could eat would cause a hemangioma.

Question: Has anyone had any problems with a spinal hemangioma? I had an MRI and they found a hemangioma on my T12 vertebrae. I know already what it is and that it is benign. On the MRI, it showed that my L5-S1 disc is pretty much done and L3-4 &L4-5 are on the way out. Now I have pain there (duh right) however I also have pain up higher and I have had pain there for as long as I can remember. The ortho doc I was referred to said there was nothing wrong with that area and there for the pain must be traveling up from the blown disc at L5-S1. There isn't really that much pain in between those 2 spaces though. Also, on the high spot, any pressure there has caused pain for many years, kind of like pain you get when you push on a really bad bruising.
I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or know someone that has and could that hemangioma be causing some of pain. I also have a hemangioma on my right sacral ala.
Answer: I.m sure the doctor must know if he has checked you thoroughly. Sometimes you get referred pain when a problem in oone area causes pain in another. It could be this is what you have, Ask the doctor,
Question: My upper eye is a little deformed for a hemangioma when i was a kid. How much will plastic surgery cost? Will insurance cover anything? Its right on my eyebrow, will it be a harder procedure since they will have to add hair
Answer: $ 8,000 - less in Mexico.
Question: my 2 month old daughter has a deforming hemangioma on her face, is she 2 young to have it removed? she has a internal and superfacial hemangioma on her nose that is deforming her entire nose, and growing more everyday it seems, we live in canada and i don't know where to take her, so far her doctor has been no help only wanting to wait things out, but i fear if we do that her nose will be forever deformed, has anyone else had this happen?
Answer: Go to another doctor. It is always better to have a second or third opinion. I would go to the best hospital in my area.
Question: What type of doctor is best to remove a strawberry hemangioma birthmark from my son's forehead? I don't even "see" it anymore, I am so used to it and so although it is the size of a pinky nail, I just never notice it,.....but he's rubbing it raw and making it bleed daily. He is 10 months old. I don't know whether to consult a plastic surgeon since it's on his face so prominantly visable, or a dermatologist. Do they use laser or surgery? Thanks
Answer: Plastic surgeon. This would their area of specialty.
Other doctors can do it, but if it were my son, it would without doubt, be a plastic surgeon.
Question: When is it time to seek immediate help for liver Hemangioma? I have pain in abdomen mostly upper, its intermitantly sharp and makes me wince,im weak, bloated, fatigue, achy, headache, emoti… blood in urine, some back pain,ect... Do i wait to see my DR or go to ER?
Answer: If you have a liver hemangioma that has ruptured, go to an emergency room immediately.
Most liver hemangiomas are benign tumors involving small balls of blood vessels, and most people with them don't even realize they have them. I have several marble-sized ones that were discovered over 15 years ago, and they have never troubled me, so I'm more fortunate than you.
Even if it isn't a liver hemangioma, you still need to seek emergency care immediately, especially for the hematuria (blood in your urine). Go to an ER and good luck!
Question: i was diagnosed that i have a hemangioma, is there a possibility that it will be treated? There are medical especialists said that it is better if i will not go under operation. The hemangioma is not inborn, when i was 9 years old it's just happen that a bloody mass appear in my gums.
Answer: Most hemangiomas disappear without treatment, leaving minimal or no visible marks. Large hemangiomas can leave visible skin changes secondary to severe stretching of the skin or damage to surface texture. When hemangiomas interfere with vision, breathing, or threaten significant cosmetic injury, they are usually treated.
The mainstay of treatment is oral corticosteroid therapy. Other drugs such as interferon[9] or vincristine are sometimes considered if the corticosteroids do not work. If this fails, surgical removal often becomes necessary. Blockage of the airway will often require a tracheostomy to be performed (insertion of an external airway through the front of the neck into the trachea below the level of the obstruction). Smaller raised lesions are sometimes treated with injection of corticosteroid directly into the lesion. Pulsed dye laser can be useful for very early flat superficial lesions if they appear in cosmetically significant areas or for those lesions that leave residual surface blood vessels in the case of incomplete resolution. Unfortunately raised lesions or lesions under the skin do not respond to laser.
Beta-blocker using agents such as propranolol is a new emerging form of therapy producing some impressive responses. Recent evidence (June 2008) suggests that propranolol can be used to treat severe hemangiomas[10]. This treatment may prove superior to corticosteroids, as propranolol has far less side effects. If the initial impressions are confirmed it may become the mainstream therapy of the future.
Ulceration will usually heal with topical medication and special dressings under medical supervision. Sometimes pulsed dye laser can be used to accelerate healing.
There is also a rare effect of Hemangioma which can cause more serious complications.
[edit] Prognosis
Hemangiomas go through three stages of development and decay:
1. In the proliferation stage, a hemangioma grows very quickly. This stage can last up to twelve months.
2. In the rest stage, there is very little change in a hemangioma's appearance. This usually lasts until the infant is one to two years old.
3. In the involution phase, a hemangioma finally begins to diminish in size. Fifty percent of lesions will have disappeared by age five with the vast majority gone by puberty.
Question: Does anybody know of a good treatment for a hemangioma birthmark? Does anybody know of any surgeons that deal with these?
mine has never gone away and it's very vascular.
Answer: If you are over the age of 10 and it is still very vascular, it is probably not a hemangioma. Some doctors will refer to any vascular anomaly as a hemangioma, but true hemangiomas occur only in infants, and lose their vascular quality during involution (though some permanently leave scars or discolored skin).
A good place to start your search for treatment is the Vascular Birthmark Foundation. They can help you find a doctor to evaluate your condition.
Question: Is an hemangioma the same thing as an aneurysm? Had an MRI of the spine and it shows a hemangioma at the T8 vertebral.
Answer: No Hemangioma and Aneurysm are different:
Hemangioma: A birth irregularity where a localized tissue mass grows rich in small blood vessels. Capillary hemangiomas are composed nearly entirely of tiny capillary vessels. Cavernous hemangiomas are composed of blood- filled "lakes" and channels.
An hemangioma may be visible through the skin as a birthmark, known colloquially as a "strawberry mark." Most hemangiomas that occur at birth disappear after a few months or years.
Aneurysm: A localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word "aneurysm" comes from the Greek "aneurysma" meaning "a widening."
Question: To mothers that have babies with a Hemangioma? Hemangioma AKA Strawberry Mark
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemangioma
My daughter has one on her chest, it is probably just a bit smaller than the size of a quarter. Did anyone feel like they had to be so careful? Her doctor said not to worry about it, more than likely nothing would happen, like it would start to bleed or anything. But still! It completely worries me!
How long before it went away? And did anything ever happen, like did it ever bleed? What are your experiences with this?
Thanks!
Answer: My daughter doesn't have one, but my niece does. Hers is located on the side of her head, in her hair. When she was young, and it was new, but no at 18 months, we don't even think about it. Hers was rather large. It is one that looks like a raised bump. One like the second picture dodownn your link, not the first one. When researching them, I found that hers wasn't bad at all, and they can be rather severe. Hers is proprobablylf the size it used to be, but she also has a lot more hair now, so it's not even noticeable. I'd actactuallyve to really look at it to see what size it is. Nothing ever happened with it. It would get slightly larger, in the summer, if it was hot out, but that's really it.
