Gortex

A lightweight, durable synthetic fiber used as a tissue filler

Question: How do you get the underarm odor out of wonderful, breathable gortex shell jackets? I bought a lovely breathable gortex shell jacket from REI. It now smells horrific. How do I get that odor out without harming the expensive jacket?

Answer: Follow the washing instructions in the jacket: Machine wash, warm water, normal cycle, *powdered* detergent, no fabric softener. I usually set things up for an extra rinse, if the machine is capable of it, or I might run it through a second cycle without detergent. Tumble dry at medium heat or hang dry, no dryer sheets. Typically, I use Tide detergent, fwiw. If it's really whiffy, add some borax to the first wash cycle. Fabric softener (common in a lot of liquid detergents) causes the fabric to be more easily wetted. Be glad you weren't around in the days of polypropylene long underwear... that absorbed skin oils and then went rancid over the course of a winter -- even very heavy washing wouldn't remove the oils. We generally considered polypropylene a one season fabric!
