Question: How do you get the underarm odor out of wonderful, breathable gortex shell jackets? I bought a lovely breathable gortex shell jacket from REI. It now smells horrific. How do I get that odor out without harming the expensive jacket?
Answer: Follow the washing instructions in the jacket:
Machine wash, warm water, normal cycle, *powdered* detergent, no fabric softener. I usually set things up for an extra rinse, if the machine is capable of it, or I might run it through a second cycle without detergent. Tumble dry at medium heat or hang dry, no dryer sheets. Typically, I use Tide detergent, fwiw. If it's really whiffy, add some borax to the first wash cycle.
Fabric softener (common in a lot of liquid detergents)
causes the fabric to be more easily wetted.
Be glad you weren't around in the days of polypropylene long underwear... that absorbed skin oils and then went rancid over the course of a winter -- even very heavy washing wouldn't remove the oils. We generally considered polypropylene a one season fabric!
Question: can you wash a gortex jacket? and if so how? what is the washer settings? i have a military gortex jacket and my kitten had an accident on it so it must be washed, please help me out!
Answer: sure! I wash mine all the time. I use the cold water setting and drip dry.
That's all there is to it!
If you're really worried, you can use the gentle cycle, but I find that since GorTex is waterproof, you kind of need the agitation of the machine.
Oh, and I usually pre-treat spots and don't use much soap at all.
Question: What is the effect of extracting blood from the fistula or gortex? what is the effect of extracting blood from the fistula or gortex?
Answer: Normally nothing, however after repeated sticks in the same spot (we call it "one-site-itis"), you can develop a hematoma which may turn into a pseudo-aneurysm, this is where a hematoma starts to communicate with the artery and you get circulation through the hematoma. This is a dangerous condition that can result in very sever bleeding and will likely result in the loss of the graft or fistula. It is especially bad for gore-tex grafts since they can't "heal".
Being a hemodialysis patient, your coagluation factor and/or platelet function will never be normal, so whoever access your G/F needs to be careful since the G/F also has arterial flow, and holding too much pressure can cause clot formation.
In addition, grafts have a nasty propensisty for becoming infected, and once it is infected, it is _very_ difficult to treat and all too often requires the removal of the graft.
These are some of the reasons why you should never allow anyone to draw blood from your fistula or graft who isn't trained in accessing them (dialysis nurse, nephrologist, vascular surgeon/transplant surgeon).
Question: How much warmth does a gortex bivy bag add? If my down sleeping bag is comfortable down to 32 deg F. how much lower do you think it would go in comfort with my gortex bivy sack over it?
This would be in the snow in a tent with a good insulating pad under me.
Answer: About 10 degrees through convection. A bivy sack will function like storm windows on your house by helping to keep the draft down.Your bag will have a higher than normal clammy feeling by morning time due to condensation though-which can be a problem with down bags which loose their loft when wet. You'll need to take the bag out of the bivy sack and hang it out in the open air to dry before you climb back into it for another night.
Question: Does anybody know exactly what digital gortex is? I know is it a type of military clothing but I want to know how you tell it is "digital gortex" and why is it so expensive?
Answer: Well its expensive cause its gortex. Digital gortex is insulated material, with most likeley the "digital" ACU patern.
Question: what is the effect of extracring blood from the fistula or gortex? what is the effect of extracting blood from the fistula or gortex? what is the legal implication of extracting blood from the fistula? Who will be held responsible for that incident?
Answer: I THINK you're asking about using a dialysis fistula for blood draws.
This should only be done in an emergency. And then, if possible, with permission of a vascular surgeon or nephrologist.
Question: What is a Gortex fabric specifically? I have a 20,000 mm waterproof jacket is that as strong as gortex? Im wondering if 20,000 or even 10,000 mm waterproof is good waterproofing? Will it keep me warm and the jacket dry in saw a blizzard or light storm say if I'm somewhere like Tahoe, Hood, or Bachelor.
Answer: Gore-tex is supposedly a waterproof breathable fabric that prevents water from getting in like any raincoat, but also lets water vapor, which your body constantly gives off, more so when you're exercising and sweating, escape through the fabric. I say supposedly because in my experience Gore-tex doesn't work very well; it doesn't vent enough moisture to keep you dry on the inside, and less so when you're exercising.
It isn't an insulating layer that "keeps you warm" by trapping heat, a gore-tex jacket is the outer layer of the three main layers.
The evidence in support of this is that most Gore-Tex and the various other waterproof/breathable jackets sold today come with pit zips and other vents in addition to the Gore-Tex, just like the non-breathable jackets. So I say, why pay more for the so called high tech stuff that works only slightly better than the jacket you already have?
For the record where it especially does not work at all is in boots and shoes.

Question: Is it against regs to wear the AF gortex parka in Civilian clothes? If I don't have any rank on it unless I am in bdus?
Answer: If there are no rank and/or unit insignia, you can wear military jackets with civilian clothes. I wear my Navy peacoat, DCU field jacket, and my DCU gortex with civilian clothes, as there are no badges on any of them.
Question: Does anyone know why no shops or online stores are selling Burton LTD Gortex Generator Denim pants? I want a pair so bad. I can't understand how no one is selling these as I am sure there has to be a huge demand for them even at $399.99 a pop.
Answer: I know! Nobody has them! That sucks!
I would call Burton direct and see if you can sweet talk someone to pull some strings and help you out. I've done that in the past with much success :)
Also, maybe log onto the burton fourm and ask on there.
Question: How do you wash Gortex? Yea i have a pair of Gortex Cammies and i was wondering how you wash them. What setting do you use and do you use detergent?
Answer: There should be a care tag on the item. Just follow the directions on the care tag.
If there is no care tag, I'm sure you can wash the Cammies in your washer. Cold water, regular laundry detergent, hang to air dry.
Hope this helps.

Question: In regards to the BDU Gortex cold weather Parka can I wear digitalized rank with it.?
And if so do you have the exact reg paragraph and section.
Answer: Negative. You have to use the old OD Green rank. Your unit could possibly let you get away with it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
AR-670-1 covers all uniform and appearance standards.
***Bryon, I think he's asking if he can wear the digitized slip on rank on the BDU jacket in lieu of the OD Green or the leadership green slip on rank. I know in my former unit, it was a no-go.
Question: Is there any way to reactivate gortex to make it waterproof? my mum washed my jacket while i was away on holidays in the washing machine with fabric softener and since it has not been waterproof.
Answer: Ohhhh...hard to say. There is a slight chance you could re-wash the jacket using a detergent safe for waterproof/breathable materials (Nikwax Tech Wash, for example.) However, there is a pretty good chance the jacket may be ruined. Fabric softener (like dryer sheets) will usually not wreck a Gore-Tex garment, but a liquid fabric softener can clog the micro-pores in the garment making it lose all breathability.
Question: What font is used by the RN on Gortex Jacket badges? You can see one at http://www.military-badges.co.uk/RN%20name%20badgee%20x3.jpg, it's the top one I'm interested in as I want to order a CCF NAVY patch in the same style (from a custom patch maker). Alternatively, if you know where I can get one ready-made, this would be appreciated.
Answer: I would ask "what font is this?" and show the picture again in another question, in another catagory. If that fails, look through the fonts on microsoft work and see which looks the most similar.
You could also send a photo of the existing text to the person making the patch.
Question: Can one remove Sharpie ink from Gortex? I have a nice camouflage bag which was given to me by a family member who is in the Army, and who wrote his name and rank on the bag. Hate to throw it away, but it's not my name, and I don't want to use it unless the name is gone. Anyone had any luck?
Answer: get this stuff called "methyl ethyl ketone" and get a bottle that you can put it into, plastic bottles are fine, and set the spray nozzle on the plastic bottle on "stream" and spray this stuff thru the bag where the ink is.you can probably get this at an auto place. in a automotive application,it is used to remove rust from the inside of gas tanks .it usually comes in 2 bottles because it is a 2 part solution, the first part is methyl ethyl ketone and i dont know what the second part is,but that dont matter.you can probably get it by itself online.be sure to wear rubber gloves in a well ventilated area, and DON'T SMOKE WHEN USING!!!!!
