Acetone
A solvent used before cosmetic surgery to remove natural oily deposits on the skin
Question: Acetone......? Any other interesting facts about acetone?
Answer: It is what's in fingernail polish.
Question: acetone ?? if H2O2 was added to acetone what would be formes also what would be formed if sodium carbonate was mixed with acetone
and acetone and water
Answer: It appears you have heard about some explosives. I don't know if you can produce one with hydrogen peroxide and acetone, I certainly would not try it at home. The other reactant mixes probably lead to no reactions.
Question: How can I dry acetone in a quick and easy manner? I've heard that you can use Epsom salts (Magnesium sulfate) to do this by heating them in the oven, putting them in the acetone bottle, and the salts would fall to the bottom having absorbed all the water. Would the same thing happen if you just used regular salt (NaCl)?
Also, another way I heard of was to use Silica gel in the same way. Wouldn't this just soak up the acetone as well though?
Answer: You need to add a substance that'll absorb any water in the acetone solvent. NaCl doesn't soak up water and so is of no use. The best way is the your method. Heat some anhydrous MgSO4 in an oven to remove any water present, then add to the acetone (carefully, if it's still hot). You can let it cool, but that would reabsorb atmospheric water. you could try silica gel, but it may partially dissolve in the acetone. you can buy dry acetone from a chemical company like aldrich www.sigmaaldrich.com
Question: How is acetone able to dissolve styrofoam, superglue, and other plastics? I need to know by two hours HOW acetone does this. Please reply.
> What are the affects of acetone?
> Why is this important for us to know in the real world?
> What affects does acetone have us?
Answer: Acetone is an aprotic solvent with a large dipole moment that easily dissolves plastics.
The simple way to think of solvents is that "like dissolves like" - the acetone is a whole lot more "like" the plastics than like salt, sugar and most inorganic solids.
Water almost universally dissolves everything inorganic.
Acetone dissolves plastics, but not people... so it won't really affect us very much at all as a solvent, though it should not be ingested.
Acetone is a component of finger nail polish remover. Great caution should be exercised to keep acetone away from our nice, clean, cool plastic products. Acetone will DEFACE just about all of the plastic surfaces and cases of our delicate electronic products like CD players, Ipods, televisions, and the like.
DO NOT use acetone to clean such surfaces, it will MELT the plastic and leave a cloudy surface that you'll never restore.
Acetone is flammable.
Acetone vapor should not be inhaled.
Question: What will acetone do to your nails? but i was wondering what will happen to my nails? Well i like to paint my nails all the time and i was wondering what will happen if i use too much acetone. Any tips of what would happen?
Answer: I used to love painting my nails all the time, and my nails started chipping.
Mine used to be very strong and thick.
The problem is not necessarily the acetone, it's the nail polish itself.
You have to leave your nails unpainted for about a week once every month or two months.
If not, they will be damaged.
If you continue to paint your nails and not listen like I did, you will have to buy a treatment from GNC. It helps your nails grow faster & stronger, as well as your skin and it protects your skin, too. It's very good, and I highly recommend it.

Question: How to remove touch-n-foam expanding sealant without using acetone? My Mom got this stuff on her hands and we don't have anything containing acetone. Town is 30 minutes away and it is midnight and kids are asleep. Anyone know an alternative to acetone to remove it from skin on hands?
Answer: NAILPOLISH REMOVER!
Question: How many moles of acetone is in this mixture? 10ml 4.0M acetone + 10ml 1.0M HCl + 10ml 0.0050M I_2_ + 20 ml H20.
I need to find out how many moles of acetone is in this reaction mixture, and I cant seem to figure out how to work out this problem. If anyone knows how to do this could you please help me with it.
Thanks in advance.
Answer: it is easy
10 ml = .01 L
4.0M = 4 mol/L
.01*4 = .04 mol
Question: How does acetone form an azeotrope with water? Please give me a detailed explanation on how azeotrope is formed between acetone and water. Like is it due to polarity or some forms of bonding?
Answer: Azeotropes are formed because of the interactions between the two species. If the attractions between the two different species are greater than the attractions between the species and itself, then the mixture is less likely to boil. If the attractions between a species and itself is greater than the attractions between the two different species, it is more likely to vaporize. These cause deviations from Raoult's Law, which relates the liquid composition and vapor pressure to the vapor composition and the total pressure. When these deviations occur, the vapor pressure changes greatly and causes the liquid and vapor compositions to be equal. When the compositions of the liquid is equal to the composition of the vapor and cannot be changed, then you have an azeotrope.
Question: What reaction occurs when isopropyl alcohol and acetone are mixed? What happens when you mix isopropyl alcohol and acetone? (both 100%)
When I mixed these two, the liquid became cloudy, and a white precipitate began forming on the bottom.
Answer: pi,
They form a solution; they don't react. Now make it alkaline, and you would get some stuff starting....
Also, you can oxidize isopropanol to acetone, but that's not what you're asking....
Hope that helped!
Question: Does acetone take off dried paint on a brick surface? someone did graffitti on my brick fence and im wondering if acetone would take it off. im going to use the acetone and a thick brush and scrub it off. will it work?
Answer: I would use the acetone generously... scrub it.... then spray with water to get it off.... repeat as many times as necessary.
The acetone will work... you just have to be patient and let it be in contact with the paint for about five minutes as you scrub it. Then spray the heck out of it with water
You may need to come back the next day and repeat after it dries and you see how much more is left.
Question: Is it true that acetone as an additive to gas can improve MPG significantly? I read that a proper imxture of acetone in gas can improve mileage. Has anyone ever tried this? How did it affect your auto?
Answer: Nope and some may cause damage to your vehicle.
There is, but they wont help improve mpg much. The spare tire is a biggie. You might be able to get a few mpgs removing that.
if you want to increase milles per gallon try installing some performance parts.
Here is a list of several that will improve in fuel economy.
1. Fitch catalyst fuel filter
2. K&N air filter and oil filter
3. Bosch platinum spark plugs
4. New chip
5. New Pcv valve
6. MPG PLUS Premium Ignition Wires
Question: What is the entropy change when 1 mol of liquid acetone vaporizes at 56°C? Acetone, CH3COCH3, boils at 56°C. The heat of vaporization of acetone at this temperature is 29.1 kJ/mol. What is the entropy change when 1 mol of liquid acetone vaporizes at 56°C?
I tried this one for a long time, yet i could not find out how to do it. Thanks in advance!
Answer: At the boiling point, the liquid and gaseous forms of a substance are in equilibrium, that means that the free energy change from the reaction:
liquid -> gas
is equal to zero.
You should also know that in general:
ΔG = ΔH - TΔS, where ΔG is the Gibbs free energy change and ΔH is the enthalpy change for a reaction.
Here, we know that at the boiling point:
ΔG_vap = 0 = ΔH_vap - T_boiling * ΔS_vap
ΔS_vap = ΔH_vap/T_boiling
Plugging in the numbers for this problem:
ΔS_vap = (29,100J/(mol*K))/(329.15K)
ΔS_vap = 88.41 J/(mol*K)

Question: What bacteria is used in the fermentation process to produce acetone? I've used acetone straight in my pickup truck and lawnmower. it is a drop-in gasoline replacement. Would like to brew up my own instead of purchasing.
Answer: I'm really hoping that you are a little confused here. It would DEFINITELY be a bad idea to use acetone in your engines. I think you mean to say "alcohol" not acetone. BIG difference.
Acetone is a powerful solvent of rubber and plastics which would cause serious harm to all tubing and gasketing in your engines, probably cause the fuel lines or connections to leak and result in a fire or explosion that could destroy you car, your garage, your house or your life. Acetone is mostly not "brewed up" - instead it is mostly produced in a chemical engineering process by heating isopropyl alcohol with high temperature steam.
If you really meant to say "alcohol" then it is theoretically possible to replace gasoline with alcohol in an engine, provided the engineers who designed the engine had that in mind and anticipated a few minor problems (including more rubber degradation issues). However, it is not cost effective to produce alcohol in a home based system. You can, if you are set up for it, make about 2 to 3 gallons of alcohol from a bushel of corn. That is definitely brewing - it is exactly the same process as running a home still for making drinking alcohol - in fact, the alcohol that is used for cars is identical to drinking alcohol -- it is basically 190 proof vodka. Sometimes fuel alcohol is "denatured" - that is, they put poison in it to prevent people from drinking it.
How big a still do you think you would need to produce 2 or 3 tankfuls of alcohol a week for your family cars? Do you really want to store that much highly flammable liquid in your house?
You need to read up on this quite a lot before you try any home production - it is dangerous and almost certainly not worth the effort unless you can get large amounts of corn for free.
ps there have been a lot of urban legends about how adding a small amount of acetone to the gasoline gives a mileage boost - extensive testing shows that this is a myth, It doesnt do anything at all for mileage.
Question: Would dissolving an essential oil in acetone work? Hi, if one were to dissolve an oil such as pepermint in acetone, and then spray the mixture of the oil and acetone over an herb of some sort, would the acetone dissolve leaving the herbs with a fresh scent of the oil?
Answer: I don't know about acetone, but it sounds shady to me. Why would you want to use a harsh chemical to make herbs smell good? I think they'd just end up smelling like scented nail polish remover.
You could use water, alcohol, or even vinegar as the base of the spray instead. Most oils will disolve in alcohol, but the water or vinegar base will need to be shaken up before sprayed.
Question: Why does a house on my street smell like acetone? Every time I walk past this house, it smells strongly of acetone. I noticed it this summer, when we first moved to the area, and I still smell it now that it's winter. I was alarmed to read that sometimes meth labs will smell of acetone. Could this be the case?
Answer: That could very well be the case. I have attached some links for you to use in further determining what to do. Hope it helps! If you truly suspect something, call your local police/sheriffs department.
WHEN TO SUSPECT A METH LAB IS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
-Unusual or strong chemical odors coming from home, trailer, garage, or other structure.
-Chemical containers being stored on the property or in vehicles (for example, extra Coleman fuel, antifreeze, drain cleaner)
-Extra trash, including chemical containers, red-stained coffee filters, plastic tubing, drain cleaner, medicine bottles or bubble packs, duct tape and kitty litter bags.
-Extra amounts of glass ware or amber cookware, hot plates, and propane cylinders taken into the residence.
-Short-term foot or car traffic at residence - especially at night.
Residences with blacked out windows.
