Myopic
The state of being near-sighted
Question: How did the right become so myopic? So we have the right up in arms that Gitmo detainees will receive H1N1 vaccine. What they fail to recongize is that in a pandemic if all the service personnel get sick and that gets transported back to the US, a great number of US armed forces could be down with a serious health issue.
What made the right so myopic as not to see the need for protecting US military personnel?
Answer: So give the vaccine to the military. Instead of the terrorists. Now who is being myopic.
Question: I am VERY myopic and have already had 2 retinal tears. How often should I see my eye doctor? The retinal tears were minor, but they were treated with laser nonetheless.
Last time (the follow-up appointment), my eye doc told me I am undergoing a "posterior vitreous detachment," and during that process these two tiny tears developed. My retinas are okay now, but how often should I go see my eye doc now?
I am severely myopic at -10 and -12. I wear rigid contact lenses.
Thanks!
Answer: You should see your eye doctor as often as he or she said to :P
Your ophthalmologist (the one who did the lasering) will tell you when (or if) they want to see you back. Often, after correcting the immediate problem, they will refer you back to your original optometrist for routine followup and monitoring. Of course, they will see you again if another tear or other problem occurs.
Barring that, typically people with this sort of retinal problem are seen every year for a dilated exam. If you're at higher risk for some reason (for example, if there was a suspicious area of retina the last time) you might return in six months or sooner. But the routine tends to be yearly.
Question: How do I use Myopic in a sentence? I need to use Myopic in a sentence, and although I understand it's meaning, I can't think of a sentence.
Answer: Mr. Jones sought a stronger prescription for his myopic night driving.
Leaving her child home alone, while she went shopping, was dangerously self-centered and myopic.
Question: Can anyone find out exactly how myopic Stephen King is? He always wears thick glasses, but I don't know how many diopters (which measures shortsightedness) King has...
I am very myopic myself, and I am a big fan of his, so I am interested! Thanks!
Answer: I don't know how you'd find out his actual prescription, but his glasses are certainly thick! And in addition to whatever other vision issues he may have, he was also diagnosed with macular degeneration quite a few years ago. He doesn't actually have any symptoms of the disease so far, but he could very well end up blind or partially blind somewhere down the road. :(
Question: Is Obama's Marfans Syndrome and it's proclivity to cause myopic vision the reason he still Smokes Cigarettes? Since respiratory ailments like emphysema are the most common cause of death of Marfans Syndrome patients. It seems the common myopic condition that accompanies Marfan's must be clouding the inevitable.
How can we convince Obama to stop Smoking.
Answer: i guess i don't know if he smokes or has marfan's but i am curious, how does it concern you. it is his choice not yours if he wants to kill himself so just relax
Question: Why the hell is a myopic person obliged to wear stronger and stronger minus lens? And what are the reasons? Why does myopia worsen?
Answer: Myopia always gets worse for two reasons:
1) people keep repeating the same mistakes that caused their eyes to become myopic. Myopia is not an illness and it's not due to genetics (except rare cases). It's simply the consequence of bad visual habits, and that has been proven by innumerable studies starting in 1969 with the seminal works by F.A. Young.
2) Glasses always make things worse, because full-prescription glasses are used for every task, regardless of distance and that recreates the same conditions that caused myopia in the first place( i.e. accommodative strain).
When you have an eye test they ask you to read the letters on a chart which is 20 feet away ( 6 meters ) and that's correct because a myope has problems with distant things and the more distant a thing is, the blurrier the vision. But who spend all their time looking at things that are so far away ? No one, and that's why the glasses usually given to myopes are excellent to see distant things but are definitely too strong for everyday use. Here's explained one of the main reasons for declining eyesight : wrong glasses. It's true that a myope can read a book with his/her glasses on but only because the eyes make an effort to compensate those glasses which in that specific circumstance are too strong. That effort is called over-accommodation and it's the real cause of myopia. A young person who has perfect eyesight can easily become myopic if he/she spends most of the time looking at things that are too close. Constant over-accommodation leads to myopia. When one becomes myopic, the use of wrong glasses (i.e. too strong for a specific distance) leads to over-accommodation and to more myopia. For instance many boys/girls keep books too close when they read/study. It's not necessary, it's just a bad habit that may ruin their eyesight over the years
A considerate eye doctor/optometrist/optician should always tell their young patients that glasses are not to be used unless they are necessary. When a myope can see fairly well without them, they must not use them. For example many young myopes do not need glasses for reading and writing, because for such a small distance their natural eyesight is more than enough. If you can read books and write without glasses/contacts and without staying too close, don't use them. For all the other tasks where distance is greater the keyword is "undercorrection" i.e. weaker glasses. Your current glasses are too strong for many activities such as using the computer, watching tv and so on .
If you have older glasses they are probably weaker. Use them whenever possible. The weaker the better, provided they allow you to see clearly enough without staying too close to what you're looking at.
Do not use your current glasses to stay at home or going out for a walk, use undercorrections instead. In other words, use your current glasses as little as possible, only when it's strictly necessary. It's always better to see a little blurry than to see perfectly, because a little blurriness stimulates your eyes, while the full correction makes them weaker and more dependent on glasses.
Always remember: the shorter the distance , the weaker the glasses, and if myopia is mild, no glasses when doing near work.
Following these simple rules won't make your eyesight better, but it will stop its worsening.
If you want to improve you surely have to use glasses properly but you also have to do exercises. There are many of them and I don't think they are all effective. I'm having great results from the method described in this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Perfect-Vision-Prevent-Nearsightedness/dp/1556436777/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254924159&sr=1-1
You'll find about 100 pages entirely devoted to answering your question (why myopia gets worse and so on)
This is the forum:

I had a -3.75 myopia and now it's just -1.00 and of course I'm not stopping here.
Just to give you an idea of the importance of the right glasses, consider that besides the exercises (which are absolutely necessary) I'm now using +2 glasses for near work. As you know plus glasses are exactly the opposite of glasses for myopia, and they are very useful because they reduce accommodation. Of course you can't improve myopia simply by wearing plus glasses, however they are an important part of visual training (when myopia is medium or high, you have to use undercorrections, not plus glasses).
Question: What do you think of the myopic spin of the medias coverage of the tea parties? Is journalist coverage like this the reason their in financial trouble?
Answer: I think so. But we are the most lied to people in the world.
Question: What should i do to improve my myopic condition of eyes? the vision of my eyes keeps on deteriorating due to computer and television.please suggest something so that i can improve my eyesight.
Answer: Take breaks from the computer and watching TV and don't strain your eyes. Get your eyesight checked often and ask the optician of ways to improve the condition of eyes, I'm sure they'll be able to help.
Question: Is there laser eye surgery available for chronic myopic astigmatism? I was diagnosed with this a while back and have a health spending account with my current job. I would like to hear some treatment options; I hope there is an eye specialist on here!
Thanks!
Answer: Yes....up to a certain prescription though. I would make a consultation, 99% of the time a consultation is free. If your not a candidate for regular lasik or customvue, there is another option. I can't remember what it was called though. Call your local lasik place and ask them questions...that's what they are there-- to help you. :) I would suggest going to a lasik specialist rather than the companies that are giant chains all over.
Question: Do two myopic people with different power see the same thing? I mean if one has -2 power and other has -6 ,what does it means in layman language?
thanks for the answer thinkaboutmoney.that means a person with -2 eye power needs to stands away 400 ft away to see what a person with -6 eye power can see?
sorry 300 ft ,right?
What are they seeing without the glasses on ?also if a person with 0 power wants to see what a person with -2 is seeing, can he do that by wearing +2 power glasses?isnt it?
Answer: EDIT based on Additional Details:
First of all, Footprintz, should RE read the question.
This question was NOT about what people who have corrected vision see. This question was about what they see without glasses. (this is/was my perception at least)
I NEVER said that a person Had to sacrifice distance vision. I used it as an example for those who might want to forgo glasses or bifocals, at the expense of a full 20/20 correction.
AND if you are an optician, then you would know that my comments were in regard to Presbyopia (inability to see close up), (lack of accommodation) and it is a FACT that 99.9% of all people have this condition as they age, AND it is also a fact that with single-vision contacts/glasses, that the ONLY way to gain close-up vision is to compromise the myopia correction, if a person wanted to push back the need for "reading" glasses.
AND in relative terms, -6 IS approximately 20/600, AND -2 IS approximately 20/200. Look it up.
Finally, this ALL assumes normal eye health (ie. no astigmatism etc.)
But to answer the later part of the question..
To answer your question, it really depends on what the target object is. With a -6, and even -2, things far away are very blurry, like looking through a really cloudy/dirty glass. It's just not sharp of course.
To put things in to perspective, 600 ft. is the length of TWO football fields!
For the sake of this discussion, let's use a Big Letter "E", that for size reference is 3 Feet Tall. Now that's a BIG E.
A person with -2, (might) be able to make out the letter from 600 feet away, or at least tell that a letter is printed on the board. BUT, the person with -6 would not even be able to tell there is a letter ON the board, and that's a fact, and, the person with perfect vision would be able to read the letter with relative ease..
END of Edit!
Yes , they see the same "thing" but the clarity in which they see that thing is going to be less with the person with -6.
Here's what it means.
A person with -6 needs to be 20 feet away from something that a person with 20/20 vision can see at 600 ft. away.
A person with -2 needs to be 20 ft away from something that a person with 20/20 vision can see at 200 ft. away.
Make sense? 20/20 is considered perfect vision (or perfect enough). Some people have better than 20/20, and some other people can have corrective lenses or contacts that can correct to 20/15 for example. But when you get older, you may have to sacrifice 20/20 for a slightly lesser correction so you can see things close-up. As we age, our ability to see things close-up deteriorates, and so a compromise needs to be made in how well a person wants to see far away, and close-up, which determines whether one needs to wear "reading" glasses!
It's a cruel world!
Hope this helps.
Question: Is it bad if I use eye drops when I have myopic eyes? I noticed that after wearing glasses my eyes have become tired and blurrier. Would eye drops help? It's for dry eyes though so I'm not sure if it would actually worsen it.
Answer: Your glasses don't fit, optically speaking. If they were prescription lenses you should return to the doctor and tell him it's not right.
If they came from the drug store, just magnifiers, they you chose the wrong ones and will have to try again.
Drops are for irritation and myopia or presbyopia are irrelevant.
Question: I am myopic. Can I become a pilot (commercial or jets)? I'm looking at it as a career so please help me!!!
Answer: As long as your vision is correctable, either by glasses or contacts, you should be able to get a first class medical.
As far as getting hired, very few airlines in the United States still do a medical exam. Your first class medical is good enough. And the ones that still do exams do not seem to have issues with eyesight. They more check for cholesteral, blood sugar and such. I have yet to undergo a medical exam for a job, and have never been asked about my eyesight. And that includes a couple of major airlines.
Long story short the eyesight issue, as long as your eye is still healthy and correctable to 20/20, is not really an issue these days. It used to be you could get a first class medical with a waiver attached for eyesight. But now the FAA has even done away with the waiver so it is just a regular first class medical.
Good luck.
Question: Does eye surgery forever get rid of myopic or short-sighted in eyes ? I just got an eye surgery in order to see things clearer. But I wonder how long does it last until for me to see clearer ?
Answer: lasik surgery doesn't cure you, or take away your vision problems completely. depending on how bad your prescription was, some people still require glasses. contact your OD for any further questions.
Question: How do people worsen their eyes and become myopic (nearsighted)? Like is it looking at the TV too close, too much computer, too much reading?
Like what sort of stuff starts that?
Websites are great too. :)
Thanks!
Answer: I did it to myself! reading in the dark and reading too close. It isn't so bad but I imagine it will get worse as I get older.
Question: Is it possible to rectify Myopic condition of the eye? My son is now wearing glasses for -3.25 cly ...... Can this be corrected?
Answer: Maybe when he grows up, by laser eye surgery.
Good luck
Question: Can a high myopic astigmatism patient have surface ablation laser eye correction down twice to treat his eyes?
Answer: Every patient is different. It is possible that he could, but it is also possible that enough of the cornea will have been removed in the first surgery that it cannot be done again.
He will need to check with his doctor to determine the correct answer for his specific situation.
Question: I am severely myopic! How often should I have my eyes looked at? Generally, I mean, when I am that near-sighted, how often should I go to the eye doc?
BTW, I had two retinal holes in one eye already, and they were both lasered and now seem to be fine.
Answer: every 12 months or sooner with problems or symptoms
Question: How to watch Avatar in 3D when I am myopic (and using glasses) ? I have never seen a 3D film , and i so badly wanna watch Avatar at IMAX 3D , but I have high myopia , (-4 D and - 2.5D) , i wear spectacles.
Can i comfortably watch 3D movie ? Can my regular glasses be worn under 3D Glasses ? What kind of experience would it be ?
Thanx in advance , I hope i get to see those spectacular effects at an IMAX.
Answer: Well you wouldn't be the only one who goes to a 3d movie with prescription glasses. I have gone many times in my life and I wear glasses too. Just put the 3d glasses in front of your regular glasses. The movie studios realizes that people wear glasses and so have made them so people can use them weather they wear glasses or not. Some people online complain about having to wear two pairs of glasses at the same time but really it is not that big a deal. I don't know why they complain about it.
Imax 3d will be the best 3d viewing because of the screen size. Its really neat on a large screen. This will be the better 3d movies because it was made to be in 3d so Cameron directed it to where the 3d effects will look very polished. Just make sure that your local Imax has a 3d projector so it can show 3d movies. Some Imax theaters will only have it in 2d. Also the 3d they use in theaters is way better than the 3d they have to use for televisions.
Question: What is the most common prescription for a myopic ( near-sighted)? I'm 16 and my prescription is -15.25. I thought many kids had it as bad as I do until my friend still my glasses today and put them on and got a really bad headache... Is -15.25 bad? What's your prescription? Will I be blind by 30?
Answer: -15.25 is a VERY high prescription
It means that you can only see 6cm from your face!
Most myopes are from -0.25 to -6.00, anything over this is considered to be high.
I assume you have thin lenses and you should know that there are other options to consider:
1. Switch to contact lenses (you'll probably need rigid lenses)
2. Consider laser surgery (LASEK, not LASIK)
3. Have a clear lens extraction i.e. have the lens of your eye removed. You'll need part time but very weak glasses for distance and glasses for all of your near work. At age 16, this is a very drastic option and I give it to you so you know it exists, but really you would have to be desperate to have this done.
4. Get the thinnest lenses possible, I guess you've already done this.
Will you be blind by 30? It's unlikely
Question: Can bodybuilding at the gym affect my -7 myopic eyesight? I wear daily contact lens and I'm a skinny 16 year old (nearly 17) male.
Answer: Unless you are lifting weights with your eyelashes, there is no effect on your eyes.
