Winter Itch
A condition in which the skin becomes irritated due to a loss of moisture. Winter itch is common in the winter when the air is drier, thus its name.
Question: Winter itch.? well my friend thinks she has winter itch, i went thru websites, many of them, trying to figure out what it was and i disribed what she would be going thru and how things look and she deffinetly thinks she has it.but no website really said 'how to get rid of it' so are there any suggestions on what she should do to get rid of it.
she has it on her hands, legs, sides, arms, and she said also on her butt area. i dont know what to tell her, she wants to try some things before going to the doctor.. esp. if he's just going to tell her to try things like 'home remedies' n all and not help her out.
thanks
Answer: It is caused by the DRY winter air. Only thing you can do is moisterize a lot. Use a shower gel instead of soap as they dry your skin less. Follow with a moisturizing lotion or one of the OLAY in shower moisturizers. (They work great) Do not take HOT showers as hot water dries more than warm. Shower less often helps too.(Not usually a possiblilty though). You can use a humidifier in your house too to help keep the air more moist and less drying to the skin. There are cool mist humidifiers on the market as well as hot ones.
Question: Winter Itch? It's driving me crazy! Feels like ants crawling all over me. Does anyone know of any "cream- or ointment-based moisturizer" that would help me? I use sensitive skin soap, laundry detergent but still itch like crazy! Any help will be appreciated!
Answer: Take a bath instead of a shower so you don't stimulate the little nerve endings in your skin. Have the water at body temperature, not hot.
Keep the room temperature cool as well and if you have a humidifier on your furnace, make sure you use it to keep the air from drying out.
Use products that contain oatmeal which is very soothing for itchy skin. Alternatively, you can actually use plain old ordinary oatmeal (not the instant kind). Put a handful into a clean handkerchief or other square of fabric and tie it up tightly to maka a little bag of oatmeal. Toss it into your bath and when it is nice and soggy, squeeze the "juice" into the water.
Vitamin E and Evening Primrose oil capsules can be taken as well.
Avoid soaps - Cetaphil is great for washing yourself and always double or even triple rinse your laundry - clothes, bedding etc.
Question: How do you get rid of winter itch on your breasts? I dont know if its just me, but man my breasts itch alot during the fall and winter. Should i put lotion on them? I dont want them to break out or anything. Im not trying to be gross, i just really want to know.
Answer: due to dry skin and wearing heavier clothes compounded by increased time spent inside heated areas you skin tends to get dry

Question: can you get a cold or fever when you have winter itch? can you get a cold or fever when you have winter itch?
Answer: no u cant, one does not cause the other
Question: What is the best thing to relieve "winter itch"? Is Lanacain any good or are there some good home remedies?
Answer: Lanacane is more for if you have a rash. If it is itchy just because it is dry, get some good body lotion. Aveeno has a number of excellent lotions, especially the Skin Relief lotion with the dark blue label. Get a good body wash for the shower, Aveeno has some good ones, so does Olay. Don't use hot water, it will make it worse, use warm. As soon as you get out of the shower, BEFORE you dry off, apply the lotion all over, then dry off, it will absorb better. You can put more lotion on after you dry off if you want. What is important is to apply the lotion within 2 minutes of getting out of the shower (dermatologists say that is when it will absorb the best). If you do have rashes, like eczema, you can use the Lanacane or over the counter hydrocortisone cream to control the itch, but keeping the skin moisturized will go a long way toward controlling the winter itch.
Question: hi i always seem to itch up when its winter, is it winter itch? hi i always seem to itch up when its winter
my questions are why do i get it during winter, i dont get it whenever its cold on other seasons like fall or summer or while at a snow mountain where it is very cold?
and during winter season whenever i work out,or get angry,or get too active, or stress itch follows?
i start getting red spots like someone slapped me on my back,my stomach, chest legs and everywhere else.
Answer: It sounds like you have Eczema, because I have it too, and I get it in the winter as well. I've had it since I was born. Eczema is a skin disease. Here are some symptoms of eczema; redness, skin edema (swelling), itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding. Not all of those symptoms occur to everyone who has it though, like for me, I only scratch until my skin bleeds. Some people have it wayyy worse than others. You should probably see your doctor/dermatologist.
Question: How do I get rid of winter itch? I've tried eucherin lotion, and using a humidifier.
Answer: Try cocoa butter or uddercream. Avon makes a really good lotion/cream called Skin so Soft hand rescue balm (soft & sensual), I use this and it's great. Also a soap called Pure and Simple sold in Chambers catalog or online is good for that. And---drink plenty of fluids.

Question: How can i cure the WInter Itch? i itch like crazy especially at night, its really annoying. its because the air here is dry and the temp is really cold like 10 degrees. how can i help this? i use lots of lotion but it doesnt help much
Answer: I had similar problem after I showered. I would itch like crazy!! So I read somewhere it has to do with hot water and dryness or something like that. Said not to shower in such hot water. Keep the water mild then your skin will get use to it or whatever. So far, it helped me a lot. I don't know if it is a related problem.
Best of luck!
Question: Winter itch, What can I do about it? In the winter time my skin get very dry and it itch. What can I do to help stop the itch
Answer: I have a similar problem. I used to be able to control it with hydrocortisone. Now I have a prescription cream. I recommend just applying hydrocortisone a couple times a day for a few weeks and see how it goes. If it doesn't work see your doctor. It's easy to control in either case, so don't sweat it.

Question: Can you get a cold or fever when you have winter itch?
Answer: The two are completely unrelated. Winter Itch, is a skin condition, and will not increase or decrease the liklihood of you getting a cold or fever.
Question: Winter itch that's not really...? My dog, every October, begins to itch and does not stop till April. It's happened every year. My vet calls it winter itch, but it's not consistent with regular winter itch.
My heat is not on, nor is the air conditioning. I have a gauge to tell me the moisture in the air, and the humidity is a little above "comfort zone," so the air is not dry.
His diet is a homemade diet that includes fatty acids and his coat is glossy and healthy. His skin is not dry. Once in a while, I put coconut oil on his coat and massage it into his skin.
I do not bathe him hardly at all because that seems to make it worse, even with benadryl shampoo. So, he barely gets washed, but his coat is clean.
No fleas, no mites, no ticks. It doesn't seem to be an allergy since it's so predictable in when it starts and goes.
He doesn't get hot spots or sores; he just scratches all the time.
Your thoughts?
As added info, I live in the Chicago area, so it gets really cold and there are no plants really doing much in the winter. My other thoughts were: a) the cold, as one person suggested, b) maybe an allergy to dead leaves or something... a stretch, I know, c) he stops his daily swimming in winter d) maybe it is nerves. No idea. He's outside on off-leash walks about an hour and a half a day.
Answer: this may sound stupid but i do believe its a real possibility maybe he is allergic to cold weather it possibly could affect his nerve endings in such a way to cause an itch i would ask your vet if hes heard of such a thing cuz all else seems normal. Its also possible that the weather change alters his mood and its a nervous type disorder
Question: Why do i itch alot? also do mosquitos bite in the winter? I itch alot it itches 1 time, and then i have to itch on the same spot a bunch of times when i look at the spot it has a bump but its winter
do mosquitos bite in winter?
Answer: Dry, itchy skin is very common during the winter...especially if you have naturally sensitive skin (like me, so I would know) or a skin condition like eczema, that makes your skin itchy, frequently. As far as I know, mosquitos don't bite in the winter; in fact, I don't recall them ever being able to survive, so I doubt it is mosquitos. However, there may be other pests, such as bedbugs, moths, or ticks/fleas even, that could be causing this irritation. So you should go see a dermatologist who can give you really good advice, or at least go see your regular physician because he/she may be able to refer you somewhere. If you want to treat the itchiness, there's this excellent OTC lotion called Curel..it's also a great moisturizer, so you can use it even when your skin isn't itchy. You can probably find it at your local drugstore or Walmart/Target or something like that. But just in case you wanna know what the bottle looks like, of the ingredients, and etcetera, here's the website:

Good luck! ♥
Help with mine please! (:

Question: Do dogs get winter itch? Ever since the snow has come and the weather has dipped below 50 my dogs have been itching like crazy... but I know they dont have fleas. I have looked them over from head to toe with a fine tooth comb and all I can find is a bit of normal dog dandruff. Could they have cold weather/dry skin itch? Ive seen dog washes with oatmeal for this use... anyone have any ideas/experience with this? They are both over 90 pounds so its not an easy task getting routine baths!!
Answer: I am a vet tech and we see this all the time in all breeds. The heat in the house takes the moisture out of the dogs skin the same way it does with ours. Some tips:
1.Don't over bathe the dogs- once every 2-4 weeks is sufficient. When you do bathe them use an oatmeal based shampoo and then follow with a doggy cream rinse.
2. Give the dogs a fatty acid supplement for their skin. You can get these from your vet or at a petsmart or petco. They replenish the lost oils in the dogs skin- but don't worry this doesn't make them greasy or oily. They are also good for their other body systems and are like a doggy vitamin. Dermatologists highly rec. them for all allergy dogs and dogs with dry skin. This will take a couple of weeks to make a difference- but it really helps and it will make their coats really shiny too.
Question: Is it normal for toes to turn dark - nearing purple in winter? And is it normal for them to itch? I just realized that my toes are turning a dark purple and i have no idea what is going on.Its an uneven distribution of color and they get pretty itchy.Does anyone know what this could be?Any clue?
Answer: No, it's not normal. From just the 2 symptoms, it sounds like a fungus if the color is just on the surface, or maybe a circulatory problem. See a podiatrist to be sure.
Question: whta the best way to get rid of winter itch?
Answer: My sister uses a Neutrogena Healing Moisturizer that has a red cross on it, and more importantly, contains benzocaine, which numbs up her skin a bit as it moisturizes. She is much itchier than I am, and will often scratch herself until she bleeds if she doesn't take care.
I'm pretty itchy in the winter months myself, but I find it's sufficient to use a cortisone cream for excessively itchy spots, in addition to a regular moisturizer. Whatever your regular moisturizer is, it shouldn't have too many additives like frangrance. A good basic moisturizer (I use Jergens) or itch-relieving one (like Eucerin Calming Cream) is best for winter dryness. I have used the 12 (or is it 24?) hour Cortaid cream, and that works well but is expensive. I usually get the extra-moisturizing (with Aloe) cortisone cream. I find it's most economical to get the largest tube of the cheapest brand there.
Don't scratch! You'll only make your skin more sensitive. Get some cream, and use that scratching energy to rub it in really well (especially the cortisone cream, which has to penetrate to work).
If you do take baths, you might try using a moisturizing oatmeal bath. Aveeno makes them, but I prefer to get a drugstore brand, then use two packets. It's soothing and it's good for your skin. But don't forget to moisturize as well.
Question: does winter itch go away after the cold weather stops?
Answer: Winter itch usually stops once the humidity levels rise and the dew point rises above 60
