UVA
Ultraviolet light type A, with a wavelength of 320-400nm; causes aging and damage to the elastin and collagen in the skin as well as tanning
Question: How to setup up a grant at UVA in the memory of a former student? I am not sure if it is called a grant. However, I want to set up a grant or donation for low-income students attending UVA in the memory of a former student. He was a alumni who passed away at 26 due to cancer.
I and others will fund this donation, grant or scholarship. We estimate it being every semester anywhere from $500 - $2,500. This is not a loan that the student will have to pay back.
Answer: Are you paying for this grant? Generally that is how you set up a grant or scholarship in someone's memory. If this money is coming from you, then you need to contact an attorny to get all of the legalities straight. If you just want to suggest that someone start a grant/scholarship in this person's name, then I would talk with individuals at the school.
Question: How concerned do you need to be over UVA rays coming through your window at work? How safe is it? As long as the sun is not shining down on you are you ok (no rays aging the skin?) What about if you close the blinds but the blinds are very thin (almost transparent). Does some of the UVA still transmit throuogh the blinds? Thanks!
Answer: Not at all!
UVA does not affect you through glass.
Do use proper protection when you are outside though
Question: How is it possible for UVA radiation to be constant or almost constant throughout the day? I have read this in several places, e.g. that the amount of UVA radiation at dusk is similar to the amount in the middle of the day. Physically this doesn't make sense to me.

Question: What are the requirements to go to the UVA Engineering School? I'm a junior in high school. What classes, tests, etc. do I need to take to go to UVA?
Answer: Here is their website, it should help you out.
Question: What percent of the student body of UVA are Virginia Residents? I heard that UNC (university of north carolina-chapelhill) reserves 80% of their freshmen spots for people who reside in North Carolina. Somebody told me UVA does not do that and instead, UVA has a lmited amount of students they can take from VIrginia. Does anybody know what percentage that is?
Answer: UVA is composed of 67% in-state students and
33% out-of-state students. So 2/3 of the spots filled for UVA is for students residing in Virginia, the other 1/3 is for out of state or international students.
Any other information regarding this school can be found on the link below.
Question: Is it possible to transfer from a california community college to UVA? I am new community college student and is it possible at all to enter UVA still at all? I play sports but i messed up in high school. If theres any way please tell me how?
And what do they look for as far as extra curricular activities go?
Answer: Ask UVA if they will admit you with your present qualifications.
Question: How or should I use uva ursi on my dog with kidney failure? My herbalist said I should use uva ursi on my dog who is suffering from kidney failure, how should I do this or should I at all? I didnt know if I should post this here or dogs, sorry if its wrong=-)
Answer: No, I wouldn't because uva ursi will make the kidney work harder and it's for the bladder, not the kidneys. I can't believe a herbalist would recommend it!
There are significant safety concerns with uva ursi. The arbutin contained in uva ursi leaves is broken down in the intestine to another chemical, hydroquinone. This is altered a bit by the liver and then sent to the kidneys for excretion. Hydroquinone then acts as an antiseptic in the bladder. Hydroquinone is also a liver toxin, carcinogen, and irritant. For this reason, uva ursi is not recommended for long-term use. In addition, it should not be taken by young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease.
So I wouldn't use on my dog either.
Question: What is the difference between UVA and UVB? Summer is approaching the Northern Hemisphere and it's time to put on some sun block, but what is the difference between UVA and UVB sun rays?

Question: What are my chances of getting into UVA? Im a junior in High school in new jersey. Ive got a 4.64 (top 10%) weighted GPA and i got a 1390 SAT
Ive been on the tennis team all of high school and ive been in a few clubs such as key club, FBLA, and Math Club every year. Ive got about 20 hours of community service per year at my church also.
I really want to go to UVA and im worried about whether i will get in or not.
Answer: It sounds like you have a good resume, but state schools put more preference on in-state students, so having a really good profile is important. Check the school's admission requirements and make sure you at least meet the minimum.
Question: What are the details of the UVA Bar in Downtown Disney? Does the UVA Bar in Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA serve those under 21? Also, is it possible to make reservations for the UVA Bar, or can reservations only be made for Catal Restaurant?
Answer: they dont serve the booze but they serve them.....Its way overpriced and the food is only ok
Question: Is UVA a good school to study at to become an optometrist? I'm interested in becoming an optometrist and I'm trying to find some good schools in Virginia for optometry... though any other schools you know that are as good as UVA are okay too.
So basically, does UVA have a good optometry school (if any)?
Answer: I believe that UVA does not have an Optometry school. UVA might offer Ophthalmology which is the MD counterpart to Optometry. Optometry schools that are"fairly" close to your area is New England, State University of New York, and Pennsylvania.
Question: What type of glass doesn't reflect or absorb uvc, uva, uvb rays? What type of glass doesn't reflect or absorb uvc, uva, uvb rays? I know that tanning beds use plexiglass. What type of plexiglass do they use?
I would like to know what type of glass doesn't reflect or absorb uvc, uva, uvb rays? I know that tanning beds use plexiglass. What type of plexiglass do they use? I'm doing a school project and need to find a strong glass that uvc rays can penetrate through with minimal refection from the glass!
Answer: You need to use quartz glass, also known as fused quartz glass.
This type of glass has good UV transmission, and is used in many types of
devices such as spectrophotometers and other instruments that require UV transmission.
It is more expensive to make than typical soda lime glass, and is also more brittle, so it
requires careful handling.
Contrary to your statement, plexiglass does block UV light. This is due to UV absorbing
compounds that they add to the plastic during manufacturing to make it more resistant
to UV damage from sunlight. Tanning beds do not need to transmit the full range of UV
light, so they can get away with using a plastic that blocks some of the shorter wavelengths.
But you will find that the UV bulbs themselves are constructed of quartz glass, to allow the
most efficient transmission of UV light, and well as stand up to the extremely high temperatures
that UV lamps produce.
Question: What's the difference between UVA light and UVB light? I just inherited a 10 year old iguana. She is just about 3 feet long. I am trying to get the proper lighting set in her new terrarium. I don't know the difference between UVA and UVB lighting? Which is more important for the tank? I also see that you can get different numbers of UVB lighting, (ex./ 5.0 UVB, 10.0 UVB etc...) Is it the higher the better? or the lower the better? Lastly, which is better - the long (old style) flourescent tube lighting OR do I want the newer styled "screw-in" self ballasted flourescent lighting? Please help an iguana "novice" out. Thanks so much
Answer: UVA and UVB are two types of ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet B occurs between 290 and 310 nm and exposure to this wavelength is the most important one for your iguana and all basking reptiles. This exposure (normally from the sun) triggers the synthesis of vitamin D3 which in turn allows the body to effectively absorb calcium from the diet. Calcium deficiency is the most common health problem for captive iguanas. Your very best source of UVB is unfiltered sunlight ie. not throught glass or plastic. The two main artificial sources are the fluorescent bulbs you mentioned ( both tube and compact style) and the mercury vapor bulbs designed for reptiles. The mercury vapors are screw in and self balasted as well but look like an incandescent. They produce far more UVB then the fluorescents and for much longer, they also produce heat. If your set up can accomodate it I would recommend one of the mercury vapors. The next choice would be the highest number UVB fluorescent tube rather then the compact.
Because iguanas see in the UV range, UVA effects how food appears to them and can effect their feeding and other behaviour so while important it is far less critical then UVB.

Question: Why do I find that most people at UVA are prone to liberalism? I am a student at UVA and I find that most people there are prone to the delusions of the far left. Why? Is it simply the natural state of man to be completely clueless, ignorant, and mindlessly sheepish?
This may very well be the reason why I am an individualist/nonconformist...
I am a student at UVA and I find that most people there are prone to the delusions of the far left. Why? Is it simply the natural state of man to be completely clueless, ignorant, and mindlessly sheepish?
This may very well be the reason why I am an individualist/nonconformist...
Note... I don't freaking care what they do in Britain... Britain is such a messed up system in which the laws are ordered in a way that they hinder the liberties of the innocent and yet do not hinder criminals in any way. I am talking about the gun restrictions there if anyone could not guess...
And besides, there are plenty of educated conservatives.
Answer: The climate at universities tend to lean left. It's very unfortunate for people who are moderate or lean right, I know...
Question: Can a leopard gecko have UVA blue lighting at night? I just recently got a leopard gecko and have a 60 watt UVA blue bulb from ZooMed. I know that geckos need heat and this bulb throws quite a bit of heat, but I am scared that if I turn it off at night the gecko wont get the necessesary heat it needs. Do I need to get a heating pad for at night and then turn off the UVA bulb at night?
Answer: Do you have a under tank heater? If not I highly suggest you get that instead of a light. The light can bother the leopard gecko. If you already have an under tank heater don't worry about it. The under tank heater will keep the tank hot enough. Leopard geckos live in the desert and it gets cold at night. As long at the temps don't drop below 65F the gecko will be fine at night.
I use both an under tank heater and lights during the day and turn the lights off at night. The tanks temp doesn't drop below 70F. I only use lights because the under tank heater doesn't get the tank warm enough during the day.
Question: Is leaving my turtle outside in the sun for a bit a substitute for a UVA/UVB lamp? We still have a heat lamp for her, but i dont have a UVA/UVB lamp for her. I left her out in the sun for a bit and im just wondering, can the sun substitute for the lamps?
Shes a baby painted turtle
Answer: Natural sunlight is the best thing for any reptile.....the uva/uvb bulbs are the substitute for the sun....not the other way around. Its a good thing you put the turtle in the sun. But when you put it in the sun i hope that it's not in a glass tank. That can be dangerous.
Question: When do UVA rays start going away? I heard that the sun is most powerful from 11:00am - 4:00pm. But is that only for UVB rays?
What about UVA rays? Is the power of UVA rays the same until the sun goes down? Or does it lessen through out the day?
Answer: UV rays do the damage(cancers) to your exposed surfaces-either UVA, UVB , or UVC. There is no lessening of the incident rays due to time of day--when there is sun--even in shadow--there will be UV exposure.
Another exposure--that of infrared--is what does the cooking. These are the rays which tan skin. Infrared(IR) is adsorbed by any surface and re-emitted as heating rays. These rays will continue to be emitted from walls, driveways, etc. for many hours after the sun goes down. To check this, stand close to a west-facing wall after sundown and feel the heat being emitted.
Both UV aand IR are harmful to exposed surfaces and should be avoided where possible--wear adjusted sunglasses and protective clothing when there is the possibility of exposure.
Question: Can you set up a Wii to the University of Virginia (UVA) wireless network? It asks me for a password, but obviously my regular user password doesn't work. Anyone from UVA got some insight? Thanks!
Answer: not sure you might need an adaptor
Question: what is it that makes your skin dark the sun light or uva and uvb ? i brought sun screen cream so that my skin wont get darker in the sun. but it says it it filters uva and uvb and harmful effect of the sun.
will this help?
Answer: No it will just keep you from getting sun burned. The sun activates the melaninocytes (melanin colors your skin)in your dermis(skin). Your best bet for not turning dark is staying out of the sun or wearing a white long sleeved shirt thats cotton.
Question: What's the difference between UVA and UVB? Too much could be not good while not enough could also be depriving yourself. But what's the difference between 'A' and 'B' ultraviolet? When I was a kid, nobody cared but today it's a big thing to protect yourself against. What is UVA and UVB?
Answer: Ultraviolet A: One of the three types of invisible light rays (together with ultraviolet B and ultraviolet C) given off by the sun.
Although ultraviolet C is the most dangerous type of ultraviolet light in terms of its potential to harm life on earth, it cannot penetrate earth's protective ozone layer. Therefore, it poses no threat to human, animal or plant life on earth.
Ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B, on the other hand, do penetrate the ozone layer in attenuated form and reach the surface of the planet. Because ultraviolet A is weaker than ultraviolet B, scientists long blamed ultraviolet B as the sole culprit in causing skin cancer in persons with a history of sunburn and repeated overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Recent research, however, has also implicated ultraviolet A as a possible cause of skin cancer. In addition to natural light from the sun, artificial light from tanning lamps contains ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B. Electric arc lamps can also generate ultraviolet light to heat furnaces for melting and to enable motion-picture projectors to show movies.
Though ultraviolet light can damage health, it can also maintain or improve health. When ultraviolet light strikes human skin, it triggers the production of vitamin D, which promotes the growth of bones and teeth.
