Porcelain Veneer
A thin covering attached to the surface of the tooth to improve it's appearance
Question: is it true that porcelain veneer teeth can not use toothpaste or mouth wash that contains fluoride? what thing/action that could cause the porcelain veneer teeth to loose of fall off?
Answer: Not true at all. Fluoride will have no bad effects on the veneers.
Question: What's the difference between tooth bonding and porcelain veneer? My teeth are discolored due to smoking and I want a new smile as I quit! I cannot afford veneer right now. I tried the office procedures like Bright Smile and got little results as well as the at home whitening kits. How expensive is bonding and how evasive? How long does it last? And does it look real?
Answer: it's minimally invasive, about $200 a tooth, lasts about 3-10 years based on how well you take care of your teeth, and yes it looks real but not as awesome as porcelain.
its a great procedure for someone on a budget but wants a nicer smile.
Question: What will your tooth look like when your first porcelain veneer comes out? will it look the same as it did before you got the veneer or different?
Answer: it would look a little bit smaller than the other teeth because of the preparation the dentist did in order to put the veneer on it and a little bit less white, but that would be it
Question: Can I have a Porcelain Veneer re-bonded the very next day? Yesterday I got 6 Porcelain Veneers. My right tooth was bonded incorrectly...It is knocking my bottom teeth and I can tell that it has shifted. I am seeing the dentist tomorrow. Will he be able to just take it off and replace it correctly...or will he have to order a whole new veneer?
Answer: I am afraid the veneer will have to be remade if it is not in the proper position. They are too fragile to try to pop off and would fracture. It should be done for no charge.
Question: How much does a post and core on tooth #32 costs? And how much for the porcelain veneer crown, on tooth #32? I've been give an estimate of $274 for post and core and about $1,280 for the porcelain crown on tooth #32: is that a "normal" price?
Answer: Usually most people would just extract a wisdom tooth before putting that much money in it unless your missing other teeth. Was that an option? A post in our office is $185 and a crown is $850 and a veneer is $900, there isnt a veneer crown, it's one or the other. I'm guess it's a crown since it's a back tooth and your have a post done. I would look around because those prices seem high, but depending on where you live. The reason people usually extract the wisdom teeth is because they have a faster decay rate than any other teeth in your mouth. And if it already needs a post and crown that means it has had a large area of decay already. I would really reconsider this decision unless like I said before your missing another lower right tooth and this is taking its place. Thanks
Question: Has anyone had a single tooth porcelain veneer? Are you happy with the results? I'm in the process of changing one of my very front teeth due to discoloration. Some people have said I should do the two front teeth so it won't "look funny." Others say that a good dentist can get the job done with one. I don't see the sense in destroying a perfectly good tooth and spending more money if I don't have to. Are you happy with your results?
Answer: i'm a dentist and i'll tell u the clinical point of view:
yes it's wrong to destroy the other tooth, if the veneer shape and shade were perfect u'll be fine.. and to correct ur words when u said:" good dentist can get job done with one".... it's not the work of dentist the shape and shade "color " of the veneer.. in fact it's the dental technician skills and experiance... good technician means good veneers...
anyway there is a job for the dentist to prepare the tooth corrictly and to give the advices for the technician and to refuse not matching shades and shapes.. but still the technician has the main Job in that....
summary: a good dentist choose a good technician to make a good veneer....
Question: my porcelain veneer when i look in the mirror seems to be transparent at the bottom and as some other spots? there are no chips or physical blemishes on the surface, what is it, and it is visible not in a mirror?
Answer: Natural teeth usually have about 1mm of translucency at the incisal edge. Light being able to pass through the veneer is what makes it look good. Extending a white color to the edge tends to make the tooth look dense and fake. Be glad that your dentist has the lab tech add that edge to the porcelain.
Question: Does anyone know the dental procedure codes for a porcelain crown and porcelain veneer? I am trying to find out if my insurance will cover porceilain crowns and veneers, but I have to know what the codes are.
Answer: A full coverage porcelain crown is code D2740.
A labial veneer- laboratory covers only the outside and cutting edge of the tooth, code D2962
Edited to add: if the veneer or crown are done for purely cosmetic reasons, you insurance likely will not pay at all.
Question: What is the difference between a porcelain veneer and a crown??
Answer: A veneer is alot like a fake fingernail. The front of the tooth is shaved down some to give the veneer room to be cemented to the front of the tooth.
A crown covers the whole tooth. The dentist will reshape the entire tooth so the crown can fit properly and it gets cemented to the remaining tooth.
Question: If i get a porcelain veneer on one tooth does this mean that the tooth will fall out prematurely? because i will be removing and weakening the enamel?
Answer: No not at all. When they put on a veneer they do file down some of the enamel, but they don't kill of the tooth.
Hope that helps
Question: I am having a porcelain veneer put on my front tooth in 2 weeks due to the loss of my front tooth.? The dentist put a temporary tooth on in the meantime and it looks TERRIBLE. Is he a bad dentist or is this normal because the tooth is only a temporary replacement? it is whiter than all my other teeth and looks like a BIG square chiclet. (the gum) I'm worried because the veneer is going on 5 days before my wedding reception!
Answer: You shouldn't be too worried. Temporary crowns are made of cheap plastic material that matches the colour spectrum of natural teeth, especially front teeth, only just. The shape is not perfect as the main purpose of a temporary crown is to protect the remainder of your tooth. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to eat, drink or breathe through your mouth. A tooth that is prepared for a crown is extremely sensitive. Unless, of course, you had root canal beforehand. There is a saying among dentists: Your temporary crowns mustn't look too good. Your patient might not come back.
So, relax, eventually your dentist will do a good job!
Question: how much does a porcelain veneer cost vs. the cost of braces? and is it more pain full than braces. because im wondering if i should get that instead of braces.
Answer: WHEN I WAS A DENTAL STUDENT I HAD MANY CHOICES FOR MY TOOTH SPACES.
I CHOSE BRACES.
WHY?
BECAUSE THIS IS 100% NON- INVASIVE AND NOTHING WILL EVER CHIP, BREAK , COME LOOSE, OR NEED TO BE RE-MADE LIKE MANY CROWNS AND VENEERS.
Question: What are porcelain veneer teeth like? I hate my teeth and smile so much, I had braces for about 4 years, And I don't know why but My teeth are so SMALL! And really weird like see through looking in some places of them, since they are so small when I smile you get ALOT OF GUM and I hate it! I'm just wondering how much they cost? And what all they can do?
Answer: http://www.lumineers.com/
This is what we use in our office. They are similar to having a fake finger nail. They cover over the old tooth and they do not need much preping like traditional veneers. Its simlar to a cap but do not cover the entire tooth like a crown does. The can run you anywhere from $800-$1000 per tooth.
Question: Can dentist remove porcelain veneer easily? My porcelain veneer are like 3/4 crown and the previous dentist didn't do a good job on the preparation as the surface is not flat. I want to have it replace for some other reason. Is it a hell of a job to remove porcelain veneer and replace it with new one? Will I lost my teeth or more teeth structure when they remove it?
Answer: Either would be easy to remove and should require very little re-prep. I am a little confused though...do you have a 3/4 crown or a veneer? The prep has nothing to do with the finished surface, so your question is not clear. What surface is not flat? The finished porcelain???? I don't understand.
Question: I have a porcelain veneer. It think the bonding agent is starting to chip off.? It's only five years old. I might floss it too much, but when I floss it snags on the back of the veneer. Anyway, I moved away from the dentist that placed it... Can a dentist grind the jagged (sharp) part to smooth the back without damaging the porcelain veneer and its bond? The jagged edge is on the back part of the veneer. I'm afraid it will lose its stability. And is this a bad sign for a porcelain veneer? Thanks.
Answer: M H,
IT'S IMPORTANT TO SMOOTH OUT ANY IRREGULAR SURFACES, OTHERWISE THROUGH CONSTANTLY HAVING THE FLOSS CATCH ON THIS THE VENEER BOND CAN BECOME LOOSE.
Question: Should I get a porcelain veneer or a crown for my front teeth? ? I grind my teeth and have damaged my 2 front teeth. Are veneers stronger for my front teeth or are crowns stronger? Has anybody had either and what is your experience with them?
Answer: Veneers tend to chip or come off more frequently when placed on people who grind their teeth. Crowns are typically a little stronger and don't come off as often. The negative is you normally have to remove more healthy tooth structure to place a crown. The positive is insurance may help pay for the crown. It is very rare for insurance to help pay for a veneer...they call it cosmetic.
Question: How much per tooth for a labial veneer/ porcelain? Hi. I live in Maryland and am looking for a good cosmetic dentist. I would like to get veneers on all of my front teeth an am looking for the best price since I have to pay with my own money (since insurance doesn't cover). I can travel to Washington, DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, or almost any other place on the east coast fo a good price. Can anyone give me a cost per tooth amount? Thanks.
Answer: You will most likely find that it's going to be close to the same price all over. Your traveling expense for the prep and cementation, which will be two trips, will add in considerably and quite possibly making it cost more than if you found a local dentist. They are typically close in price to a full crown, slightly higher. The usual cost to a patient per tooth, without any build up or anything other than the prep and cementation is around $800.00. By the way; "all veneers" are made of "porcelain" material, and all are placed on the "facial" or "labial" side of the teeth. Facial and labial mean or are the same, but a "veneer" itself only goes on the "one side of a tooth" being the front side. Just thought you might want to know what it is you’re planning to have placed on your teeth. I hope you’ve done some research on this, I do not recommend these at all. There is more failure rate with these than with a full coverage crown. The full porcelain crowns can be made to look as realistic as your natural tooth. It may be something you might want to look into before making your final decision. Good luck and hope I’ve been of some help.
Question: I'm 16, can I get porcelain veneer done on my tooth? Well, I'm 16 and I just wanted to know is it okay if I have porcelain veneer done on my left front tooth. I had a root canal done on it and had several whitening methods done on it but it's still yellowish. I spoke to my doctor about it but she tells me that is it better to wait until i'm 18. I don't want to wait, prom is soon and I feel kinda embarassed ... Should I get it done?
Answer: I believe you are old enough to do something with the tooth. Because the tooth is dead you can grind on it without worrying about nerve damage. Also the tooth should be fully erupted into your mouth. The only question I would have is would it make the tooth stronger to completely cover it with a full porcelain crown rather just to place a veneer over the outside of the tooth. If you do not have a lot of good tooth structure left on the tooth and the tooth will become more brittle than a live tooth, it is something to consider. I would discuss it with her. Good luck
Question: Is there an acceptable alternate porcelain veneer to Lumineers? $800 to $1200 per tooth is not affordable! Doesn't Lumineer have any competitors?
Answer: There are several veneers on the market, and many besides Lumineers that dont require tooth reduction. Just about every major dental lab makes them. Lumineers are well known because of TV and Dr. Dorfman (He did the makeovers on the Extreme Makeover show on ABC) Prepare to pay $300 to $1500 per tooth depending on brand and geographic location. My office does Lumineers and five other brands. We charge $600 per tooth to cover the costs and to have a profit as well on the Lumineer. Actual cost of the Lumineer for the dentist (counting the lab fee and materials used, and assistant man hours and for the glue) is about $420 per tooth.
Lumineers are not necessarily the best on the market, you need to take into account your situation (ie what you want to change about your smile and how your teeth line up, and what exactly you want to cover up) You may want to have a little tooth reduction and a different kind of veneer to achieve your desired results.
Question: how exactly do porcelain veneers work when it comes to chewing food? since a patient can choose to have their porcelain veneers to be longer than their own teeth, won't this cause a problem with the chewing surfaces of their teeth if the veneer is taller than their actual tooth?
Answer: Before the veneer is put on, the tooth is prepped to remove natural tooth structure. The porcelain veneer replaces that lost tooth structure so that actually, the tooth is the exact same size as when it started.
