Local Anesthetic
An anesthetic injected to numb the area being treated
Question: Does the local anesthetic injection before a Vasectomy hurt? I understand that there may be complications/pain/swelling after during recovery. I can manage that. I am very nervous about the procedure. Not so much the cutting because I will be numb, I am worried about the actual injection of the local anesthetic. I think I can deal with them going through the skin but how bad does them pulling and then injecting the actual tube hurt? Please fellas be 100% percent honest, I don't care if you are tuff I want the truth.
Answer: It stings like any other needle. Did you think it was different because it was down there? You had needles in your arm before, right? Ever had a tooth pulled? A vasectomy really is no more traumatic than that.
By the way, they did not stick the needle into my testicles, or in my penis. Some people will tell you that just to scare you.
My vasectomy was a piece of cake.
Question: who can legally administer a local anesthetic? I realize there are many times when it would be nice to be numbed, but what are the laws regarding local anesthetics? What kind of training or certification is required to legally numb someone or possess the anesthetic for that matter?
Answer: Doctors can administer local anesthetics, unless their license is restricted from this. Nurses can administer local anesthetics but most hospitals require them to be certified first by someone within their facility so that this practice will fall within a nurse's scope of practice and so they can cover their butts if litigation should occur.
Question: When you get a tattoo could you ask for a local anesthetic? Not that I'm interested in getting a tattoo, but if everybody who gets one says it hurts, why don't they just try to arrange for a local anesthetic injection so they don't feel the needle (or any pain, for that matter)? I mean, they do that with minor surgery all the time, right?
So do you know if they do use local anesthetic when tattooing? I would have thought that most people would have figured that out by now.
Answer: There are several different angles you need to look at this from:
First, in order to be allowed by law to provide anesthesia you need to be either a medical professional such as a dentist physician or a certified anesthesiologist. In other words, you need to be a medical doctor in order to inject people with anesthesia. This would prove to be a huge waste of time and money for tattoo artists to provide this service.
Secondly, tattoos have always been a rite of passage. There are two cannon rules to something being a rite of passage: 1.) There has to be pain 2.) It must leave a scar. Tattoos qualify for both. By taking away the pain you're taking away part of the experience.
If getting a tattoo was painless, people would have a lot more of them in many areas of the body. Getting a tattoo is an experience. You SHOULD remember when why where and what it was like the day you got your tattoo forever. I can...
That's my two cents. Hope it helps.
Question: Is a local anesthetic administered as a shot when you get a cavity filled? Hi...I'm due to get a cavity filled, and I hate shots...so for minor cavities, do you get a shot w/ local anesthetic or do they use some kind of numbing jelly or something?
Answer: A numbing gel is placed on the gum first and then when the needle is inserted you wont feel it but as the anesthetic is injected you'll feel a slight stinging sensation. I have had 9 fillings and I had two minor ones done without anesthetic and hateded it, it was really umcomfortable.
Do your best to relax, close your eyes and take calming breathes.
Good Luck, Be Brave
Question: What is the best local anesthetic drug.Is there any one available in spray form? What is the best local anesthetic drug.Is there any available in spray form?Different brands name such as Xylocaine are used in local anesthesia but it is available in the gel and ointment form.Could any body search the right one in spray form, and also its use.
Answer: What's best for you depends upon what you need it for. Is it to remove a splinter or treat something on the surface in the skin. In that case sprays which produce an instant freeze and numb the area for several seconds can be used - sprays such as a skin doctor uses. For longer time control creams or patches with numbing lidocaine can work for an hour or more. For something deeper you might require an injection. You decide.
Question: how long on average does it take for local anesthetic to wear off after injections? My Girlfriend has had a local anesthetic in her foot today to have the anti inflammatory injection in her ankle, she had this at around 11am today and her whole foot is still numb and warm 10 hours after it happened, the consultant had told her that it should wear off after about 6-7 hours. We just need to know that if it's OK or not.
Answer: i had it on my foot too on monday it took about 12 hours.it defo will go away by morning
Question: does anyone know of the side effects of a local anesthetic given toremove a syst? my mom had a syst on her chest and the dermatologist removed it using a local anesthetic. now she is having facial numbness and jaw pain. almost like when the novacaine wears off after a dentist procedure. also she chews nicorette gum so this may be the cause. we aren't sure. any help is appreciated.
I have been reading and find that this might be Bell's Palsy. Anyone know anything about this.
Answer: it isn't the local that is doing that. Mom needs to be evaluated in an emergency room, her symptoms are congruent with cardiac pain, she could be having a heart attack.
Question: Ive a very rotten wisdom tooth (bottom right) Can I have it out under local anesthetic ? I first noticed it 3 years ago and now there isn't much left that's visible above the gum line - But its hurting now more than it did.
I can't bear the thought of general anesthetic - Can I have it out under local?
Answer: Sometimes you can. It depends on if the tooth is impacted ( if the tooth root has grown into your jawbone) If it is impacted they may have to knock you out. I have had three wisdom teeth removed with only having the numbing injections because they were not impacted. I feel bad for you, I know how bad it hurts. Do not put it off and get it taken out because trust me, the pain only gets worse.
Question: When getting a spinal, do they give a local anesthetic first? I am having a c-section on Thursday and i was just wondering when they do the spinal do they numb you with a local anesthetic first and then do it? Or do they just put it in?
Answer: They will give you a local such as lidocaine. For some, this is the most painful part, as lidocain stings like a bi***!
ADD: Of course the lidocaine hurts less than the procedure would without it :)
Question: Is it NECESSARY to tell my doctor that I smoked marjuana a week before im but under a local anesthetic? I've never smoked marijuana before but plan on doing it one week before I have to get an embolization...they're putting me like on some sort of mild sedative or local anesthetic or something while theyre doing the procedure. Is it possible that smoking a week before it could present complications during the procedure???
Answer: It's unlikely it's going to make much difference, but that's beside the point. You should always tell your doctor about these things. He isn't the police.
Question: Could you explain how each local anesthetic solution is used in Dentistry? I am a new dental assistant and if a dentist, hygienist or assistant could explain the different local anesthetics used and when used when numbing someone, that would be wonderful! Also, what gauge of needles are used for injections? Thank you.
I need to know this for setting up rooms for procedures.
Answer: Sounds more like you are trying to practice dentistry without a license. If you are really a dental assistant, you won't need to do any of these things, nor would you need to know this information. If you really think you need it, ask the people you work for.
Question: Can a meniscal tear be repaired by a local anesthetic? I am having a meniscal tear repaired on may 20th and was wondering if this can be performed under a local anesthetic.
Answer: yes it can be repaired under a local anaesthesia ,
Question: hey! any body have an idea about using local anesthetic in conjuction with epilation? I want to use local anesthetic during epilation with Braun. Can i use that before this and what brand i should have to prefer?
Answer: This is the promlem of milions of girl. But if somebody ever find something for the pain i realy think that it will be very popular by now. :( This is life..... you will get use with the pain in te end...
Question: ( Use Local anesthetic or laughing gas)i am having oral surgery to expose a tooth that is stuck in my gums? i have had this surgery before and i used sedation due to the magnitude and seriousness of the operation. I am sort of doing the same thing except a lot less serious. the oral surgeoun gave me the option of local anesthetic or laughing gas. I have never used laughing gas so can i please have some peoples experience using laughing gas and their opinion on wether i should use local anesthetic or laughing gas thank you....( i want the least amout of pain and anguish) ($%^)
Answer: I would ask for both. Laughing gas will not deaden the pain at all it just helps you relax. You want to be numb and even though the shots are not fun you will have no pain. Both of my children had this procedure done on them and both were numbed.
Question: Is a local anesthetic anything to worry about? I am having a procedure in about a months time and I am getting a little nervous about having a local anesthetic, I know it won't take long but I am just such a worrier..can anyone help?!
Answer: It really isn't anything to worry about. It will sting a bit, more so in specific areas (having it done in my thyroid hurt worse than having it done on my liver; having it done in my liver hurt worse than having it done on my toe- all in all though, it wasn't unberable), but once it's done, it's done and you only feel light pressure afterwards.
The main thing I didn't like was the pain I felt after the procedure. This really depends what procedure you're having done, but I can almost guarantee that you will feel at least a little sore afterwards.
Question: is it normal to have a general anesthetic and a local anesthetic at the same time? last week i had a circumcision with the chosen aneshetic being a genral anesthetic, but i when awoke from the operation the nurse told me that i was also given a local anesthetic. in my dazed statew it didnt even cross my mind to ask her why.
any ideas why i was given the second anesthetic?
Answer: The general knocks you out for the procedure
The local controls the pain after you awaken
Question: Getting wisdom teeth cut out- do they put you to sleep or give you a local anesthetic? I do not want to be put under/put to sleep...I want local anesthetic. Do they do this? Does it hurt too much doing it that way?
I mean extracted/cut out of the gum....they haven't come through yet bc there's no room, they're making my other teeth crooked. :/
Answer: It depends...my sister only got local anesthetic..my mom was put under.
Question: Couldn't a local anesthetic be given to baby boys when they're circumcized? How do we know for sure that baby boys don't feel the pain of circumcision? If we're not 100% sure (and only a baby can tell us this), wouldn't it make sense to err on the side of caution and give the baby a local? He wouldn't be drugged down with a general anesthetic, so important to be careful of with babies.
Wouldn't it be better to use a local rather than nothing?
Btw, I'm not prego and I'm not a Mommy, but curious. I read about this on Wiki, and yes, some docs put a cream and others use a local, and some even do both (so the cream can reduce the pain of the local injection... yeow!), but there are still some Dr's who use nothing.
Barbaric.
I read about mohels and how they don't always use anesthetics, but that their way is a quick clipping, rather than crushing the skin. Jewish babies generally experience less pain than babies having this done by crushing the skin.
I wonder if mohels would do this for non Jews, being that the parent can always request a local, their clipping method is less painful than crushing? That is, of course, if the mohel is an MD, 'cause not all of them are.
Answer: Yes, it is better to use a local rather than nothing. But best of all is to leave him with his male parts intact! Why would you do this to him anyway? It is proven to decrease sexual sensation, and he's eventually going to grow up and be sexually active, even though it's hard to think of that now. And keeping it clean is not a big deal. NEVER force the foreskin back to clean under it, though. It will loosen by puberty, and he should be taught to roll it back himself when he washes all his other body parts.
There is NO good reason to do this barbaric procedure. It is dropping sharply in popularity, and most of his peers will have intact penises.
Question: I am nervous for a local anesthetic surgery? How can I calm myself? I am getting surgery on a bad scar on my chest and will be getting local anesthetics and am REALLY worried! Please help?
Answer: The fact that you will be conscious and able to see what is going on should be a great relief and should calm you down.
With a general anesthetic you are unconscious and you will not be aware of what is going on.
Question: Impacted wisdom tooth taken out with just local anesthetic? I plan on going to an oral surgeon this week to get my impacted wisdom tooth taken out. I'm choosing only to get the local anesthetic because I really dont want to be put to sleep for 1 tooth. However, my dentist recommended I should probably be put to sleep so I wont feel anything. Has anyone had an impacted wisdom tooth taken out with just the novacaine, and if so how was it and how was recovery after? Thanks!
By the way, Im 21 years old and the tooth has not fully developed yet.
Answer: Yeah, if you are not scared of it or nervous or whatnot, you can do it with just local (actually novocain has been off the market for like 30 years now, apparently, it's a whole host of other 'cains nowadays :)
I had mine out with local and light nitrous, for about half the thing, and I've had a bone graft with local only, and it's really not bad.
BUT: you should know that as an OMFS, your guy may not want to (or would rather not) work with conscious patients. IT does give them another thing to worry about, and some OS may not want to worry about that. But it may not bother him, just depends on your surgeon :)
good luck!
