Limbal Relaxing Incisions

Surgery on the eye involving multiple incisions to correct astigmatism; abbreviated as LRI

Question: Has anyone had the LIMBAL RELAXING INCISION either during or after cataract surgery ? If so what was your astigmatism, and was it worth it? When did you have the LRI, and have you had any side effects? All details greatly appreciated!

Answer: Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRIs) are routinely done during cataract surgery. Today we performed 14 surgeries and nearly all had an LRI. Most of the patients I saw today will probably have 20/20 vision within the next two weeks. Most people do not even realize we did an LRI. On occasion we have performed LRIs after cataract or LASIK when a person has residual astigmatism left from the procedure. It is quick and recovery is usually just a couple of weeks or so. Patients usually use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops for about a week or so just to limit risk of infections. (which are extremely rare) Since the LRI incision is a surface incision and does not go through the full thickness of the cornea there are not a lot restrictions after the procedure. Just keep your hands away your eyes for a couple of weeks and no water in the eye or make up for a couple of weeks are about it. Ask your doctor for the names of people he has done these procedures for. Most doctors have a list of people who have given the physician permission to release their names for others who are contemplating procedures to discuss the experience. While anyone can tell you good or bad about their personal experience, it is always good to discuss the details with someone who had the same physician.
