L-ascorbic Acid
L-ascorbic acid is a form of Vitamin C.
Question: What does the L mean in "L(+)ascorbic acid", and what does the plus sign mean? Is L(+)ascorbic acid the same as L-Ascorbic acid?
Answer: The L means that in the second carbon from the bottom, the order is HO-C-H. The (+) means that the compound rotates the plane of polarized light to the right as opposed to the left, which would be denoted (-).
L-(+)-ascorbic acid is sui generis. The other would be D-(-)-ascorbic acid.
Question: I use a L-ascorbic acid product on my face, but it is turning my nails yellow - any suggestions?
Answer: Using a L-ascorbic acid product is actually a lot more tricky because of how difficult it is for companies to extract it without exposing it to oxygen. In other words, you may be using a rancid product which is actually harming your skin than being beneficial. The more expensive the product, the greater the possibility of it being extracted correctly, but even so, it's still not 100% productive, so generally staying away from it is a safer rule of thumb for your skin.
It doesn't sound like a very good sign if your nails are turning yellow. Maybe quit using the product. What could it be doing to your face that you're not aware of right now?

Question: Does anyone know if Trader Joe Vitamin C Crystals is L-ascorbic acid? It says on the ingredients 100% ascorbic acid with no fillers. How do I know which type of ascorbic acid it is? (I already e-mailed Trader Joe's I am just waiting for a response)
Answer: I'm pretty sure it's L-ascorbic..A slightly more expensive oil-soluble form called Ester Vitamin C would be indicated as a "selling point" on the bottle
Question: How Can I Measure A 30% Solution Of L-Ascorbic Acid In Water? I assume by weight would be most appropriate. I can get to 25% at 1:3 grams, but am unable to figure out how to get 30% exact, and don't want to guess. I have a scale, and small bottle that could measure mL, and some other measurement, I don't have it with me.
Could someone help me? Thanks!

Answer: If you are happy that 1g ascorbic acid + 3g water is 25% m/m solution, ( this is totally correct) then a 30% m/m solution is 3g ascorbic acid + 7g water.
Question: Where can I get L-ascorbic acid in Sydney? Hello there !! anyone got a store name/location in Sydney where they sell L-ascorbic acid for personal skin care purposes ?
Answer: Buy it online if you can't find it anywhere online.
Question: 10 cm3 of 0.2 mg cm-3 L-ascorbic acid equals to how many mg L-ascorbic acid? 10 cm3 of 0.2 mg cm-3 L-ascorbic acid __________mg L-ascorbic acid
please answer that question for me, thanks
Answer: 1cm3 = 1ml
0.2mg = 0.0002g
10ml (0.0002g/ml)(1000mg/1g) = 2mg
Question: I can't find L-Ascorbic acid anywhere!? So I live in Albany, NY and I am trying to find L-Ascorbic acid and vegetable glycerin to make my Vitamin C serum. Ive checked CVS, Walmart and can't seem to find it. Should I ask the pharmacy in these places if they sell it? Also should I go to a health food store? which aisle would it be in? THanks
I am trying to make vitamin c serum for my acne scars.
Answer: All biologically derived vitamin C is the left handed stereoisomer.. It is possible that some synthetic processes make equal combinations of both L and D or the right hand version. It is likely that D works just as well on the skin even if they sell it. If they sell it as vitamin C, it should be the left handed version. That is what vitamin C is.
Question: Where can i buy L-ascorbic acid in Manila? vitamin C that is used for topical creams.
Answer: You need ascorbic acid in powder form, not the tablets or capsules (for oral intake) right?
You can probably call Alyson's chemicals (02 7122266) in Del Monte Ave. QC. I'm not sure though if what they have is L-Ascorbic acid or dl-ascorbic acid, or if they are still selling ascorbic acid.
Question: Does anyone know of a company that carries 100% pure L ascorbic acid vitamin c? making a DIY Vit. C serum?

Question: Does L-Ascorbic Acid or Retinol work on redness left by acne? thx
Answer: 1. Not sure on Ascobic acid.
2. Retinol will work (Acutaene).
3. Keep in mind that Acutane is prescription medicine. Do NOT over use it. There are some side effects. It will get rid of about 30% scarring.
Question: What types of bonds/functional groups are in ascorbic acid? here is the diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:L-Asco…
I know the molecule is covalent and the C/O bonds are covalent but are the bonds with H hydrogen bonds??
And as far as functional groups all I know is that it contains alcohol and is a lactone but I'm confused if there are any other functional groups I'm not seeing..we didn't learn much about these in class yet :/
Answer: * Cyclic Ketone
* Cyclic Ether
* Cyclic Alkene
* Alcohol
Those are all the functional groups. Functional group = anything other than alkane basically.
And no they are covalent bonds. Hydrogen bonds are more or less interactions (not bonds, just given the name bond) - also hydrogen bonds are not usually shown in diagrams of molecules like the one you gave the link to.
Question: Where can I buy L-ascorbic Acid? I live in NC. Thanks
Answer: Go to any drug store, or health food store. Ascorbic acid is commonly known as vitamin C. Even better, eat some citrus fruits.
Question: molarity of dissolving .145g of L-ascorbic acid in 250mL of distilled water.?
would it be .0033 moles/Liter?
Answer: Molarity = moles/L
So you need to figure out the atomic weight of L-asorbic acid.
Then figure out how many moles you have by dividing your .145 by the atomic weight
Then take the moles and divide by .250 (which is 250 mL in Liters)
Question: Can both enantiomers, L- ascorbic and D- ascorbic acid, able to act as vitamins?
Why is it that L- ascorbic acid is active and not D- acscorbic acid? What are the similarties and differences between these two?
Answer: Only the levo form is active, which I'm pretty sure is true of most things used by the body.
The difference between levo- and dextro- forms is that they are mirror images of each other. The levo- form molecule rotates polarized light to the left and the dextro- form molecule rotates it to the right.
For unknown reasons, life just happened to evolve prefering the left-handed form.
Question: converting glucose to ascorbic acid??how is it done ,I need to know the mechanisms,help? help me i need to know how is glucose converted to L.ascorbic acid
thank you.
Answer: One industrial process is illustrated here:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co…
For more detail, read about the Reichstein Process (Hint: google). The modern process uses the following sequence (numbers refer to the diagram at the link):
glucose (1) ---> sorbitol (2) ---fermentation---> sorbose (3) ---fermentation---> ketogluconic acid (5) ---> ascorbic acid (6)
thereby avoiding the protection / deprotection that was included in the original synthesis.
Question: I'm trying to make a face cream using ascorbic acid.? I read about the benefits of vitamin c for the skin and how to make a moisturizer using L-ascorbic acid powder mixed with moisturizer cream. I picked up a bottle of ascorbate C from the Vitamin shoppe. It's made by Twinlab. Is that the same as L-ascorbic acid powder. I mixed it with a cream but the powder didn't dissolve totally and I can still feel grittiness when I apply it to my face. It also works as a tightening mask instead of moisturizing. Anybody know if I'm using the same thing as the L-ascorbic acid? Anybody hear of this skin idea?
thanks,
Answer: The pH of the resulting cream is critical when mixing up ascorbic acid, as it has a very narrow "workable" pH range without it becoming deactivated. Your best bet is to research the chemical in the US Pharmacopeia, or talk to company chemists about the pH of their products,and what they use as stabilizers in their products.
Question: Help with identifying functional groups and understanding the structure of ascorbic acid? I'm supposed to do a project on ascorbic acid for chemistry class and my part of it is explaining the diagrams and all the parts of the molecule but I don't exactly understand...
here is the structure diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:L-Asco…
what are the functional groups?? i think it has alcohol but that's all I know :/
and when it has those broken up lines on the bond with the H and HO what does that mean?
Answer: It has four alcohol groups: one primary (at the left), one secondary (on the chain) and two tertiary.
To some extent one or other of the two 'enol' groups on the five membered ring will possibly exhibit keto-enol tautomerism (Google this phrase if it's new to you).
There is a C=C double bond making it an alkene (though see keto-enol above).
There is an ester group -O-CO- in the ring (so you might term it a lactone)
The two hatched lines indicate that the -OH and -H are arranged above the plane of the paper.
OK?
Question: What meal is made with these ingredients and instuctions? Salt, cumin, cinnamon, paprika, tumeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cloves, olive oil, ginger, garlic, red food coloring, chicken, and 2 other ingredients I'm not sure of: (S)-2-hydropropanic acid and L-ascorbic acid which is vitamin c, but that's all I know.
Directions: Mix everything other than the chicken in a bag. Add the chicken to the bag and let sit overnight. Cook the chicken.
This is for a school project so I'm sorry about the lack of information, but it is all the professor gave.
Answer: I agree with Jane. The first chemical is found in yoghurt and the second is found in lemon or lime juice. When you throw all those ingredients together in a plastic bag with red food color you're making Chicken Tandoori or Chicken Tikka I'm pretty sure. Check out the attached recipes:
Question: where can I buy different organic/inorganic ingredients online in Canada? For example, I'm looking to buy just PLAIN:
L-Ascorbic Acid, Ferulic Acid, Sea Kelp Bioferment...
not lotion, shampoo, but PLAIN ingredients... I want to mix it with other ingredients to make my own DIY products :S. please help & thank you
Answer: Ebay & Amazon
Question: im using retin a right to thicken my skin..i kjnow it thins out the outer layer of the skin and thickens the? epidermis...does it take time for the epidermis to thicken? because right now my skin is becoming thinner, it's starting to sag...what about l-ascorbic acid...i herad that thickens the skin as well...does that thin the skin first too?....any other cream to help with my condition besides surgery...i'm so depressed...
Answer: RetinA if used properly will help to regenerate skin similar to a baby's skin. You must stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm, use a sunblock from head to toe EVERYDAY, reapply to exposed skin like hands, face, neck and consume plenty of fruits, veggies and fish.
Most people who use Retin A are not disciplined enough to use it for at least 6-8 weeks. All they see is the dead and red skin. You must be patient with Retin A.
Retin A rids your skin of the damaged skin and rebuilds your skin to a thicker and more collagen rich structure. If you continue to bask in the sun you are SIMPLY wasting your $$$ and making your skin a haven for wrinkles and sun spots.
I have used RetinA for 4 years...my skin is blemish free and flawless!
Retin A is really the only skincare product that is really a "miracle" in a jar. In grad school I worked part-time at the Estee Lauder counter. Women would think I used that expensive stuff to maintain flawless skin. It was using Retin A 4 times a week that keeps my skin perfect.
Along with the SUNBLOCK!
