Gingivectomy
Temoval of part of the gum to treat gum disease or to improve the appearance of the teeth or the smile; used for a gummy smile
Question: Gingivectomy? I'm getting a gingivectomy tomorrow (a relatively minor type of surgery that involves the removal of a small amount of gum tissue around one or more teeth)-but luckily, only on one tooth. i was just wondering-if you have had a gingivectomy; how painful is it? how long after the procedure will my gums be sore?
thanks in advance!:)
Answer: DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF TISSUE REMOVED SOME DISCOMFORT MAYBE EXPECTED. TAKING ADVIL AFTER THE PROCEDURE IS OVER AND BEFORE THE ANESTHETIC WEARS OFF WILL GREATLY HELP.
Question: Does anyone know when gums start to look the way they're supposed to after a gingivectomy? I had a gingivectomy yesterday because my gums we're pretty big. After they were sort of swollen and really red along the edges. She said that's normal, and now it's gone down a little, but my gums sort of look exactly the same as they were. Im not too sure if they're still swollen or not, but I hope so because I don't want this to be the final result. =] Thanks!
Answer: It takes 2 to 3 weeks to be back to normal provided that your oral hygiene is very good
Question: How long should I wait to use Crest Whitestrips after getting a Gingivectomy? I hear there's gum irritation.? Gums heal pretty quickly after gingivectomy's but i'm not sure how many days I should give my gums to heal before starting Advanced Seal Crest Whitestrips. There's already a warning for gum irritation on the box and i can't find an answer to this question anywhere.
Answer: you want to wait until your gums are completely healed if you don't it will hurt if the bleach gets in there.
Question: How much does a gingivectomy cost? Im 15 year old, my teeth are so small, when I smile its very gummy. I want to get a gingivectomy, but i need to know how much it cost (my mom probaly cant afford it) so i want to save up and get it done. Does anyone know? thank you!
Answer: You can easily check your minimal health care rates in internet, for example here - health-quotes.talk4fun.net
Question: Will a Gingivectomy make my gap seem larger? I am having a gingivectomy in about two weeks and I have a slight gap in my two front teeth and I am nervous that my gap will look larger. Will it?
Answer: Because of having some of your excess gum tissue removed, it may appear that the gap has gotten larger even though it hasn't. Good luck with the gingivictomy and am glad you are doing something to treat your periodontitis.
Question: What is the process of a gingivectomy via laser? Just wondering. I'm getting it done after my braces for aesthetic reasons. Also, is it possible to use topical anesthetic to perform this procedure? Thanks.
Answer: you'll be having a little soft tissue contouring done. there are certain proportions of heigth and width for each tooth. the laser gently removes some of the gums. healing is much faster and virtually pain free compared to use of a scalple. i would rather have local anesthetic than topical for this procedure. on the patients i've tried doing this with topical there is usually some discomfort and i really need you to sit very still while i'm contouring the gums. it only takes about 3 small shots to get numb enough.
Question: What is a gingivectomy and is it worth having if your gums suck? I'm 26, got my braces off, my teeth are straight, but I have cavities I need to take care of in addition to bleeding gums I suffer when I floss. Is surgery on my gums the answer? If so, when's the recovery time?
Answer: A gingivectomy is necessary when the gums have pulled away from the teeth, creating deep pockets. The pockets make it hard to clean away plaque. Gingivectomy is usually done before gum disease has damaged the bone supporting your teeth.
How Well It Works
If you maintain good dental care after surgery, a gingivectomy is likely to help stop gum disease. Your gums should become pink and healthy again.
Risks
Gum surgery can introduce harmful bacteria into the bloodstream. Gum tissue is also at risk of infection. You may need to take antibiotics before and after surgery if you have a condition that puts you at high risk for developing a severe infection, such as:
Damaged or artificial heart valves.
A congenital heart defect.
An impaired immune system.
Liver disease (cirrhosis).
Artificial joints, such as a hip replacement.
A history of bacterial endocarditis.
What To Think About
Gingivectomy may help keep gum disease from further damaging your gum tissue, teeth, and bones by helping you to clean better around and between your teeth. If bones are damaged, it is more likely that you will lose your teeth.
Gum disease usually will progress if you do not brush and floss regularly after surgery or if you continue to use tobacco.
To promote healing, stop all use of tobacco. It decreases your ability to fight infection of your gums and delays healing. For more information, see the topic Quitting Tobacco Use.
Regular follow-up with your dentist is important. If your gum disease gets worse, you may need a different type of surgery.
Question: If u have gingivitis is gingivectomy necessary? If one has gingivitis is gingivectomy necessary? Or can one just treat oneself by flossing and brushing daily?
Answer: I didn't have gingivitis to my knowledge but did have deep gaps in my gums beside my teeth. My dentist was worried about this condition and had mentioned surgery. I didn't like the sound of that.
I had been using toothpicks with the plastic holder to work around my gums as instructed by my hygienist and it had helped but not done a complete job. At his recommendation, I got a water pic. The first time I used it my gums bled quite a bit but by day 3 this had stopped. This indicated that I was successfully cleaning out the bacteria. My next cleaning visit showed a wonderful improvement in the depth of the gaps and they had improved so much that my dentist was very happy and didn't worry about the surgery. I have continued with the water pic and think it really helps.
Certainly brushing twice a day is very strongly recommended. Flossing is also recommended.
I think you should try the water pic but only your dentist can tell if it will prevent the need for the surgery.
Question: How long does a one tooth gingivectomy take and does it hurt?
Answer: im not an expert on periodontal surgeries (that would include gingivectomies, etc) but im assuring you that at the most this would last for a few hours(it may even be as short to half an hour, depending on how complicated the gingivectomy is). it will not hurt during the procedure because you would be anesthesized. it could be compared in length (maybe) to tooth extraction, it doesn't take too long. however after you undergo the procedure a type of wound dressing would be placed on the area and it might feel a bit sore for a while due to the surgical wound. however, this can be addressed by instructions you will recieve from your dentist about caring for the area while it heals, this may or may not include anti-inflammatory drugs to help ease the discomfort a little.
this is a fairly simple procedure and complications are manageable, just ask your dentist especially on taking care of the area while it heals and follow his/her instructions. if complications arise, i suggest calling him first, although anticipated complications for this are quite manageable as long as they're reported promptly and properly. take care!
Question: How much is a gingivectomy? When I smile, my gum shows a lot and I want to reduce that as much as possible.

Question: Can i get a gingivectomy whilst wearing braces? Or do i have to wait until they come off?
Thanks!
Answer: I think its best to talk to your dentist, A gingivectomy is a type of minor surgery that involves the removal of a small amount of gum tissue around a tooth or teeth. A gingivectomy can be performed to correct a poor smile or maybe needed to be done to remove a diseased tooth or allow a filling to be placed.
Performing a gingivectomy is quick and relatively painless. Firstly a local anesthetic is applied to completely numb the area of the gums. A small incision is made and the excess gum tissue is removed using a dental tool. A periodontal dressing covers the teeth and gums post-surgery to protect them while fully healing. This takes a few weeks but after that the gum is completely free of pain.
Question: I had a gingivectomy yesterday and my gums are still sore. What can I do to relieve the soreness?
Answer: BEN,
YOU NEED TO TAKE SOME ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDS LIKE ADVIL TO HELP WITH THE PAIN AND SWELLING.
Question: what if i don't get a Frenectomy or a Gingivectomy done? What will happen i have braces? I need to kno & fast please & thxx
Answer: They are both right, if the space closes, you will have a large piece of gum tissue between your teeth and then when your braces come off the space with open back up, even with good retainer wear. It doesn't hurt, they numb you.
Question: I had a gingivectomy on monday. My mouth is still a little sore, when willit be better?
Answer: It will problably be better in a few days as loong as you are following your dentist's directions for pain control and as well infection and bacteria . I hope you get well soon and good luck
Question: will i be in pain after gingivectomy? i have to have it done tomorrow, and i was wondering if my gums are gonna hurt, after the numbness wears off.
Answer: It takes a few days or weeks for the gums to completely heal. Ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) is very effective for pain. Dental management after surgery that includes deep cleaning by a dental hygienist will be put in force to maintain the health of the gums. Visits to the dentist for the first year are scheduled every three months to remove plaque and tartar buildup. After a year, periodontal cleaning is required every six months.

My two front teeth were being forced apart because of excess gum tissue.

Question: gingivectomy? how much does it cost? i have a gummy smile and want a gingivectomy done, how much does it normally cost? i want as much info about this as possible, thank you

Question: Does a gingivectomy hurt? And how long does it take?
Answer: When a gingivectomy is performed by a skilled dentist or periodontist, it is not a particularly painful procedure. You might be provided with a prescription for painkillers to get you through the first night, but most patients find they don't require them. Keeping the surgical site clean and exercising care when eating (soft, bland, luke warm foods recommended) definitely helps to reduce discomfort. Most importantly, to speed up the healing process and to reduce the risk of infection, DO NOT SMOKE after surgery!!! How long the procedure takes depends on how large the surgical area is. Some patients only need surgery around one tooth. Other patients need surgery around multiple teeth.
