Genioplasty
Surgery of the chin
Question: Genioplasty...? I am having mandibular advancement surgery for my deep bite.
I was wondering whether I should get a genioplasty as well. It is part of the surgery but is not absolutely necessary and would cost about $1200NZ extra.
Any recommendations from someone who might have had one?
Answer: If it's something you would like to have done, that's the time to do it. No extra pain, anesthesia, or recovery time.
It can make a big difference in your appearance, but so will the mandibular advancement. Your surgeon is the best one to tell you what the expected results are with and without the implant.
Good luck with your surgery!
Question: If I wanted to have a genioplasty done on my jaw, should I see a plastic surgeon or oral surgeon or both? My whole face is kind of malformed....so I probably would have to see a plastic surgeon anyway.
But I have also heard that the more plastic surgery you get, your face has more chances to look even worse than you started off at.
So I am wondering if I should go to the oral surgeon or the plastic surgeon. If I just wanted one thing done, it would be the genioplasty.
Answer: any of them can do the job...
depend on his experience with such case
Question: How long does it take for the swelling to subside from a chin implant? Sliding genioplasty? Anybody know where I can see a picture timeline of patient recovery?
I'm hoping the swelling will not be noticeable after 10 days.
Answer: even less
Question: Anyone know the approx cost of a genioplasty/mentoplasty OR in addition with the cost of orthognathic surgery? the orthognathic surgery would NOT a very severe case. Also, what about the recovery time with either surgery? Anyone ever had either surgery before? Thoughts?? Thanks to all.
Answer: Orthognathic surgery excluding braces (us +/-4000 dollars), is 3000 us dollars approx and genio in addition another 1000 dollars if it is done separately there will be more costs due to separate theatre times.
Question: In a sliding genioplasty, how long does swelling last? I want to make sure I can go back to school without my face being all puffed up and blue.
In another related question, how soon can I get back to working out and lifting weights after the surgery?
Answer: hrm...usually 3-4 weeks, i didnt get one but my friend did and all noticable swelling went down between that time period
Question: Whats the difference between a chin implant and a sliding genioplasty?
Answer: A chin implant involves placing a plastic bump in your chin under the skin layers. A sliding genioplasty involves cutting off the lower portion of your jaw bone and sliding it forward a bit and then stablizing it until it heals in place in the new position. The chin implant is easier and I know at least one person who had this done about 40 years ago and she has had no troubles with it.
Question: Has anyone had sliding genioplasty? Has anyone had or knows of anyone having a sliding genioplasty? How did it go?
Answer: Its not a very difficult procedure, looks very good afterwards
Question: How can I speed up the healing of nerve damage on my face? I just had a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy and genioplasty. my lower lip and chin is completely numb and no sensory whatsoever. Is there any herb, supplement, vitamin, or therapy that I can do to encourage regeneration of the inferior alveolar and mental nerve?
Answer: Your nerves regenerate at a set pace. If you eat healthy, get enough sleep and stay generally healthy it will come back. You should check with your doctor before taking any suppliment. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it can't hurt you. You may lose some sensation permanently. Hopefully your surgeon was very careful to spare your nerves permanent damage.
Question: Pain in jaw joints after jaw surgery should i be worried? I had overbite and I just had the bottom jaw procedure and genioplasty done. Since right after the surgery I have been experiencing occasional pressure and pain in both of my joints and feels like they are worse than before the surgery. It's been 10 days since the surgery. Should I be worried?
Answer: wait for some time this may be a normal response to surgery and dont worry so much just consult with ur doctor.ok
Question: Will a chin implant make my face look longer? Okay I've always had a not very structured chin. Its kind of punched back a bit. Thing is though, my face is more of a long oval shape. I want a more prominent chin, but I'm afraid my face will look longer. I've heard of sliding genioplasty where they actually take a section of bone from your chin already and slide it forward. Will that keep my face at the same length b/c the last thing I want is a Sarah Jessica Parker length face.
Haha, love South Park by the way!
Answer: u should get that doctor from south park to perfom a chinoplasty!
Question: Rhinoplasty/genioplasty- PLEASE HELP? Okay so here's my situation:
I'm a 16 year old girl. I have always wanted a nose job and chin augmentation. I have a large nose and my receding chin makes it look even more big. People pick on me ALL THE TIME and I get a lot of stares when I'm out in public. I feel totally alienated from my friends. I cannot find the courage to speak to my mom about getting plastic surgery. The last time I brought it up she got up and walked away like she didn't even hear me!
I feel like everyday that goes by is another day that was wasted and I won't truly start living my life until I feel beautiful. I want to do this for ME and not anyone else.
So my problem is, how can I afford this? My parents aren't going to help me
Answer: Next time you go to your doctor, mention this to him/her, and ask the doctor to speak to your mother about how this is affecting your self-esteem. Maybe that will at least open their eyes to how you're feeling. I'm sure your parents think you are beautiful and see you as a perfect young lady that doesn't need to change... all parents are like that. As for paying for it on your own, I have no idea other than get a savings account at a local bank and start saving. The problem is, you won't be able to get the surgery without your parent's consent until after you turn 18.
Question: Should I get a sliding genioplasty-cosmetic surgery? To fix jaw line..? I started invisalign to straighten my teeth about a year ago, stupidly thinking that it would move my lower jaw forward somehow as well to fix my overbite, but found out later it will do no such thing. I recently went to two orthodontists to find out what I could do about my lower jaw being too far back. It messes up my appearance because it is not as far forward as it should be and I have no jaw line when you see me from the side. I asked about jaw surgery and one orthadontist told me having my entire jaw moved forward would be very major and my case isn't as major as most who would go through that kind of painful surgery, he said that he definitely sees that my lower jaw is too far back though. He recommended moving just the front portion of the jaw forward, my chin. It is much more minor but will have a similar affect on my profile but the recovery is only a week or two. I visited an oral surgeon who said he usually does this procedure WITH jaw surgery, and rarely does it for cosmetic purposes. He referred me to the best of the best, a surgeon trained both in oral surgery and plastic surgery he said if his daughter was to have this procedure, he would take her to him.
My question is do you guys think I should do this? I have always been somewhat against plastic surgery and I never in a million years would have thought I would get it. I am a 19 year old female by the way, in college. I just hate the way my chin messes up my profile and face and just doesn';t look normal so far back, I wish I had gone to an orthodontist when I was a kid because they could have fixed this while my jaw was still growing but now surgery is the only option. Every day I wear my long hair on the sides of my face to cover my profile and I could never wear it in a ponytail due to being so self conscious about it. Please let me know all of your opinions on this. Thanks.
Answer: Hello..Before you consider having jaw surgery to improve your profile you need to consult with a plastic surgeon to see if a chin enhancing implant would achieve the profile your looking for. An implant is easier to do and the healing period is far shorter. As for should you or shouldn't you, If you would feel better about yourself, do it. Good luck and I wish you well.

Question: I have a receding chin due to having a severe overbite and also this is hereditary I was told. I was told I? I was told I needed sliding genioplasty. That procedure involves cutting and moving the jaw forward and screwing it in with plates and screws. I really don't want to get it done. Will braces help move my lower jaw forward, helping the appearance of my chin? Thank you for your advice.
Answer: This sounds like the right thing, genioplasty is only where they move your chin, not the whole jaw. Osteotomy is when the jaw is cut. Braces cant change your skeletal, it only changes the teeth and in most cases, surgery is needed to enhance appearance.
Question: Why do pain killers have no effect on me? I recently underwent jaw surgery on my upper and lower jaws including genioplasty. This was my first major surgery and I was suprised to find out that no pain killers the nurses gave me had any effect! It's two weeks later and I'm still in constant pain. In the hospital, large doses of morphine and tylenol 3s did nothing. At home, the huge ibuprofen pills might as well be made out of sugar. :(
Why does the medicine have no effect on me and is there something I can do about it? All this pain has not been fun and I'm scared that someday I'll have something happen to me where I'll be in a lot of pain and nothing will help!
;_;
I am 5'5 and weigh 140 lbs.
So no.. it's not because I'm too big.
I have never used drugs, smoked, or anything like that and I never took these drugs before.
I don't notice a difference in pain when I take the drugs and when I'm not taking them. It's the same level.
if morphine is the strongest and that didn't work, does that mean that I'm doomed to be in pain no matter what happens to me?
Answer: I think you need a prescription for a stronger med. When I had my ear surgery, MD gave me this Oxycodone, which is a mild pain killer. It works well. There are also other types of stronger pain killers out there. You doc will have to be the one who write an order for you. Talk to your doc because I don't think any of these over the counters will help you really.
Question: What's going on with my jaw line? I'm not overweight or anything but looking at some of my pictures from when I was a preteen and even into my teenage years it looked like I had a more well defined jawline. Now in my thirties it's like there is very little left as if the bones shrunk or something. I'm not sure if this is natural or part of an illness (I have had bouts of illness throughtout my late teens and 20's--bleeding kidneys for a few weeks here, a few months there) I'm considering Genioplasty when I have enough money because I would like to be able to see a picture of myself and not think yuck. Because it's like I have no chin and I'm 5' 10'' 138 pounds so I'm not fat. Just don't know what's going on here.
Answer: Some of us have smaller chins than others, and often our facial characteristics become exaggerated as we mature. I'm guessing that what you perceive as an undershot jawline is just a natural consequence of aging.
If you're uncomfortable with it, see a board-certified plastic surgeon about chin augmentation! It's a safe and relatively reasonable procedure. I see nothing wrong with minor surgery to make us feel better about ourselves; I've always had a tendency to carry my weight in my torso, so three years ago I opted to have abdominal liposuction, and I couldn't be happier to have a flat tummy!
Good luck to you :)
Question: Orthognathic surgery recovery? It's been 3 weeks since I had lower jaw surgery to correct an underbite and crossbite, as well as genioplasty (chin forward) and today I got my splint out so Im wearinng rubber bands and Im still not allowed to open wide. So Im just wondering...based on your experience whether you're a doctor or nurse, or a patient who went through this. when do you think I will be able to open wide and eat whatever I want? Im still on a liquid diet. Thanks
Answer: The usual recovery period is 6-8 weeks. Don't try to do too much too soon.
Question: Digital Imaging and Cosmetic Surgery...Accuracy? I will be having cosmetic surgery, a sliding genioplasty and rhinoplasty (in other words, a chin augmentation and a nose job), and I wanted to know how accurate the digital imaging is, assuming that the surgeries go well. Before you tell me the importance of respecting your own body, understand that this surgery is reconstructive in nature.
Anybody with experience, did your nose job/chin augmentation look very close to the digital imaging, or did it look quite different and was the image only a general idea?
Answer: Yes, I would say that they're about 90% identical/accurate. The purpose of digital imaging is to give the patient a good idea of the outcome of a specific operation. As long as you're going to a respectable plastic surgeon who is board certified and well-qualified, then your outcome should be very satisfactory.
Question: My Chin is messed up? I had a sliding genioplasty done, and now my chin is discolored. It is slightly darker and has a tendency to go red if I rub it or shower too much. I'd like to know if this is because of some kind of skin infection like dermatitis, or if it's because of something damaged inside the chin.
Answer: It is dermatitis
Question: Nose job advice needed? I've been unhappy with the balance between my nose and my chin since... forever. My nose is slightly too big IMO and my chin slightly too weak, plus my nose is slightly tilted, only a bit, but enough to wreck my confidence.
I'm sick of it, I have £1000 in the bank and I'm just going to do something about it now, hopefully with further financial help from my parents.
I want a combined rhinoplasty and genioplasty (chin) - I'm not talking major stuff, just a balancing of the features by making the nose slightly smaller and smoother and pronouncing the chin.
Could anyone tell me whether or not it's a good idea to get this done elsewhere in Europe, how much it would cost in the UK, how successful these things usually are, and if they have any other advice on this I'd like to hear it.
This has been getting me down for literally years and years, it's my one and only weakspot in my confidence, but it's a huge one :(
Answer: Hi, well .. Only you can decide where it is best to have it but I had mine done in the UK by one of the nest surgeons and now it looks wonderful. Mine used to be a bit droopy like Paris Hilton's but now I have a cute nose that suits my face. I was unhappy with it for years and it is definitely the best thing I ever did. It'll cost about £5000 in England if you chose a good surgeon. I'd say if you really want to do it, go for it. But remember there are always risks attached. You are lucky that you can tell your family about it. I was nervous about telling, so only my fiance knew. Also, there will be a lot of swelling for a while. It's about 4 months since my op now and my new nose is looking really nice and the swelling is nearly all gone. I've never known anyone to have chin work but if you go to a good doctor, he will be able to advice you. Good luck and don't rush into anything.
