Endoscopy
A technique using an endoscope to view images of the body's internal structures through very small incisions
Question: Endoscopy? I am due for a endoscopy tomorrow morning, and i was wondering if anyone had this done before, and if so, how long did it take and what did you feel like afterwards. thanks i am sooo nervouse about this!
Answer: I had an endoscopic test last week. It wasn't bad at all--I didn't feel a thing! They give you partial anethesia, so you're out. I also had a colonoscopy, and both procedures took about 45 minutes total, so it shouldn't talk too long. I was kind of out of it afterwards, but I didn't really feel sick. They tell you your throat might be sore afterwards, but it wasn't. Just make sure you swiggle that liquid they will give you tomorrow morning. It tastes DISGUSTING, so be prepared. It's only a little bit, and it will automatically numb your mouth, so you won't feel a thing.
The worst past honey is drinking that prep! I promise it's all downhill and fast from there :)
Question: endoscopy?!?!?!?!??!? I had an endoscopy w/ sedation and anesthetic spray. My throat didnt hurt all day but, now it has been hurting really bad. I took tylenol but, it hasnt helped. Is this normal that it hurts like this? Or should I talk to my doctor, could it be b/c I had biopsies too?
Answer: I have had an endoscopy and the doctor biopsied something, I was fine after wards, no sore throat.
Perhaps talk to your doctor, especially if it hurts bad enough to take Tylenol and ask if its normal or not.
Question: What are the risks of getting infections from endoscopy? Hi I wonder if anyone could provide more info on this please?I'm due for an endoscopy in a couple of weeks. However, upon doing some reserach on the hospital where it'll be done, I found that it was listed as 'London's dirtiest hotel' in a spot check done recently. I am really worried about the possibility of contractiong something like HIV or Hepatitis C through an endoscopy procedure??So now, I'm as stressed out about this as well as the lump I feel in my throat.
Would appreciate any advice/answers?
Answer: Ask the doctor to start you on Antibiotics before the endoscopy and continue for a few days after. Don't take chances with NHS badly cleaned hospitals.....
Question: How long does it take to return to normal activity after endoscopy? I am going in for an endoscopy in the AM will be home by 2pm. It's the same day as my husbands holiday party starting at 6pm. Will I be feeling well enough to go to this event or should I reschedule the procedure for another day?
Answer: I had an upper endoscopy done last year. The procedure was not hard to get over, the only problem I had was the anesthia that they give you. It took me about 24 hours to recover from that. HOWEVER, I do not respond to anesthia that well, so it always takes me longer than the average person. For you, I would say that you may not be feeling great at your husband's party, but you can probably make it through. It all just depends, in my experience, on how you react to the medication.
Question: How much time should I request off for work for an endoscopy/colonoscopy? I received notice in the mail yesterday with my appointment for my endoscopy/colonoscopy. I have to prepare for it one day and then have the procedure the next day. And they are putting me to sleep for it. Should I just prepare for it while I'm at work and only take the day off the for procedure? Or will I feel good enough to go to work the next day after the procedure? Anyone else go thru this and have any advice? Thanks in advance to all answers.
Answer: You should only need the the day of the procedure off. You will need the rest of the day to sleep off the effects of sedation. You are not asleep. You will be lightly sedated and then given Versed which produces amnesia so you will forget everything.
Question: What can i eat before an endoscopy and a colonoscopy? I am having an Endoscopy and a Colonoscopy tomorrow at 10:00 AM, and I would like to know what I can eat, and when is the last time I can eat.
If you would answer quick I would appreciate it.
Thank You
Answer: If you are having a colonoscopy they should have told you that you can only have clear liquids for day before your test. Then they should have prescribed some meds for "cleaning out our colon" that you take the night before the test.
Question: I am having gallbladder issues and need an endoscopy, what is entailed in this? I am having an endoscopy done tomorrow, but, they gave me no information. I read once that they keep you in recovery for a few hours, but, others are saying you are done in 15 minutes. What exactly is entailed? What drugs do they give me, how long does it take and what does it feel like?
Answer: they will give you fentanyl and versed more than likely. It is a great drug combo. You will be very relaxed maybe even sleep some and then its over. The drug causes loss of memory so you will wake up not remembering the entire thing. Its a quick, simple procedure. Also the drugs wear off about an hour afterwards depending
Question: Is it normal to feel a uncomfortable pain in your stomach after getting a Endoscopy stomach biopsy? I got my Endoscopy yesterday morning, but I still have the achy pain in my stomache.
Answer: I had my endoscopy yesterday and I still feel bloated as well, so it's nothing to worry about. However, it abdominal pain persists you should definitely call your doctor! My dad's a doctor, and he said I may feel uncomfortable for a couple days, so not to worry.
Question: What could be wrong with me, if I've already done an ultrasound and endoscopy and had nothing come up? I've been sick for about a year, and it's been slowly getting worse. I've gotten an ultrasound and an endoscopy, and the docs couldn't find anything. I can feel something in my stomach that wasn't there before and I think that's what's been bothering me.
Please help? And if you have any suggestions for tests I'd be happy to hear them.
No rude comments, please.
Answer: Ask your doctor for a MRI, it may show something the other tests couldn't find.
Question: Can an endoscopy pick up gallbladder problems? I have an endoscopy coming up for some tummy troubles I have been having. The doctor thinks its either my Crohn's Disease flaring up or gallbladder problems. Just curious if the gallbladder problems would show up on an endoscopy.
Answer: Endoscopy...no, ERCP...yes
In an endoscopy, they send a scope to go through the esophagus,
stomach, and the first part of the intestines (duodenum).
Your throat is numb and you are sedated and ask to swallow
the scope.

In an ERCP, they go through just like a
regular endoscopy but further....over to where
the bile ducts come down to meet the first part of
the intestines (duodenum). They usually shoot dye
up into the bile ducts, then and it will show up on
the screen. They can see if the bile ducts are
malformed, twisted, obstructed, have a stone or
growth in them, etc. If they see a stone, they can
remove it. If the bile ducts are narrow, they can
use a balloon catheter to expand them. And more.

Usually, for a gallbladder problem...an Ultrasound
is done. They can see stones in the gallbladder,
and the bile ducts and if there is a stone that has
moved into the bile ducts. The can also see
how the blood is flowing through the liver, if
necessary.

Question: what is the difference between a colonoscopy and an endoscopy? I had a colonoscopy done 3 years ago, they went in through the rectum, I had a friend tell me that I should get an endoscopy where they go in through the mouth, I asked if this would reach my colon and he said yes, is this true too?
Answer: I don't think so. Your small intestines are far too long for a camera to make it through the meters of that ****(Not literally). But I' a designer, not a doctor!
Question: Is it okay to smoke if you recently got an Upper endoscopy? My friend got an upper endoscopy about 3 days ago & he occasionally smokes marijuana, His doctor said he wasnt suppose to take any medication for a month. Will it effect him in any way besides the high .
Answer: That is inserting a camera.
Your friend should ask his Dr. what exactly he means by not taking medication for a month.
The Dr is probably meaning tablets but should be more specific. Smoking MJ goes into the lungs and not the upper GI.
Question: Are you supposed to fast before an endoscopy procedure? Ive to go in for an endoscopy on thursday and it says nothing on my hospital letter about fasting , so im just wondering do i have to fast?
Thanks!
Answer: yes matt i think you do as it gives a clearer picture call the hospital and see what they say
Question: How uncomfortable is an upper endoscopy with sedation? i m going for an upper endoscopy tomorrow morning and i feel very scared and worried about it
can i request for a larger dose of sedation?
will i feel the tube going down my throat?
will i gag alot?
Answer: I've had 3 of them. The sedation is really the trick. You have this vague idea that something is happening, but you really just don't care. They can give you something to numb your throat so you don't feel it. I have a strong gag response, but even I didn't gag until maybe the end of one of them. I think that Dr. was being too conservative with the sedative.
Question: Endoscopy: better to have it done via a spray without sedation or better with sedation? My mum's got an endoscopy soon, and in the letter, it says she can either have a spray and stay awake or a sedative. She doesn't know which to choose.
Answer: Many endoscopic procedures are considered to be relatively painless and, at worst, associated with mild discomfort; for example, in esophagogastroduodenoscopy, most patients tolerate the procedure with only topical anesthesia of the oropharynx using lignocaine spray.
The sedative most commonly used is Versed - which is a light fast-acting sedative that will leave your Mum with little or no memory of the procedure; however she can respond to the Doctor's questions during the procedure, ( she will not feel any discomfort). I've had many "scopes" - all using versed, (injected into my IV), and I was very happy with how things worked: - no after surgery sickness, groggyness cleared up right away upon waking, time in Post-0p was usually about 1 hour. (Plus I like the fact that I did not have to be awake while whatever was being done was done, and I did not have to listen to the Doctor's & nurses chatter, - I was asleep and comfortable, and that was fine with me.
Question: How do you feel after an upper endoscopy? My husband is having an upper endoscopy and he wants me to stay with him all day after it! Is that really bad or is he just being a baby?
He never had one (neither did I) so I dont know how people usually feel after.
Thank you so much Diane! Yes I think he is just being a baby... he is not even going back to the office after the test. Men!
Answer: It depends. What sort of drugs is he getting? If he is in the US, he should be getting some pretty good drugs and will not be allowed to drive home on his own. After the drugs wear off he should feel fine. His throat may be sore because of the tube.
I was up and about (with some burping and stomach pain due to them blowing me up with air so they could see) and acting normal after all the drugs wore off. He should be fine, just take half a day off. OR you could decide to just be with him and fool around all afternoon, lol!
Question: What foods should I avoid after an endoscopy? I have a lot of abdominal pain and I think its a certain food I'm eating.
Its been 3 days after the endoscopy and I still have pain.
What should I do?
What should I take to make this pain go away?
Answer: Watch out for spicy acidic foods and I would calll my MD to be on the safe side!
Good Luck!
Question: How long will your throat hurt after an endoscopy? I had an Endoscopy thursday 10/22. My throat is still killing me! Only on the left side. How long should the throat pain last for???
Answer: I had an endoscopy 2 weeks ago and I did not have a sore throat at all.
Altho, a friend of mine had a sore throat after her endoscopy and she said it took about a week for hers to go away.
If your throat is really that sore, maybe you should call the office of the doctor that performed the procedure and see what their advice might be.
Question: To undergo an endoscopy procedure for the pancreas do they really have to make you to sleep? Has anyone ever underwent an endoscopy procedure before?
If so can you explain what they did?
If they put you to sleep will you wake up immediately or will your waking up be that painful type that involves a gradual process?
Thanks..
Answer: They make a very small incision and use a tiny camera to look at your innards. You definitely do NOT want to be awake because 1) why would you want to be awake while people are poking around inside you and 2) the last thing you need is to move or squirm and end up having the camera tear your intestines or liver.
Coming out of anesthesia isn't usually painful and this procedure won't be very painful to heal from because the incision they make is so small (1cm or so).
Question: If I got an endoscopy through my nose, how far would the doctor have seen down my throat? I've had difficulty swallowing for a bit and got an endoscopy done through my nose, it took about 15 secs. He said everything was ok. I was just wondering IF there was cancer near the bottom of my neck area, if he would've seen it. Now I'm waiting to do a barium swallow.
Answer: What kind of doctor did the endoscopy. I it was an ENT or cancer specialist, they passed the scope down the nose, into the pharyngeal area (inside throat, below the back of your tongue) and probably to the opening of your esophagus. If there was any abnormal growth in this area, the doc would definitely be able to see it. If a gastroenterologist passed the scope, 9 times out of 10 they would put you in a twilight sleep before passing the scope. They would be able to see the same areas as mentioned above but they would also pass the scope into the esophagus, into the stomach, then the upper part of the small intestines.
What kind of trouble swallowing are you having? There are so many different types of difficulty swallowing. A barium swallow will mainly look at your esophagus, making sure you do not have an obstruction, mass, or even reflux. If the barium swallow is negative and you symptoms continue, you may benefit from a Modified Barium swallow. This test is different than a standard barium. The MBS is performed by a trained speech pathologist. They look in the pharyngeal area, making sure the muscles that protect your airway when you are swallowing and making sure there is nothing going into the airway.
Hope this helps!
