Question: Is it bad to take Colace more then the recommended amount? I've been taking Colace for 2-3 days now and it hasn't been working. I am going to the bathroom but my stools have still been hard. Is it bad if I take 2 in the morn and 2 in the evening?
I've also tried Metamusal for 2 weeks and that hasn't softened my stool either. Any other recommendations for meds would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: You can take as much Colace as you need. I'm assuming it's the 100mg tablet. But if you take 4-6 a day and it still doesn't help, try another brand. Are you dieting? What is you diet like otherwise?
Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
Question: How many colace is a person supposed to take? It doesn't say on the bottle and I don't want my spleen to fall out.
Answer: I'd stick with 2 pills in one dose. When it was given to me post birth, I was give two pills at a time every 12 hours and my spleen didn't fall out :)
If taking 2 pills doesn't help within 12 hours then take one more. Drink lots of water.
Question: Does a certain type of Jelly Belly or Jelly Beans contain colace? My dad is having surgery and is going under anestetic and you know how it affects you being able to go to the bathroom well, I had a woman at my work that doesnt work there anymore so unfortunatly I cant ask her that told me that a certain kind of Jelly Belly or Jelly Bean contained Colace in it to help soften stool. She had a stomach problem and sad she always carried a baggie of them with her. I am trying to fiure out what kind it was? Can anyone help?
Answer: That is an urban legend that came about because one woman said she became more regular if she ate jelly beans before bed, and it ended up on the internet.
The active ingredient in Colace is docusate sodium. There is no docusate in jelly beans.
You can buy docusate over the counter as Colace or any number of cheaper generic brands. Just look at the labels in the laxative section of your store.
Question: Has anyone used peri colace during pregnancy? My OBGYN said it was okay to take 2 a day, but I am still hesitant. Has anyone had any experience in taking peri colace?
Answer: Yes, it's definitely okay and perfectly safe! I took it a lot during my pregnancy because two doctors told me I could and I needed it! I was totally fine and so are all the other preggos I know who take it. You'll be perfectly fine :o) Also, lots of water and wlaking really helps to get things moving!
Question: Is the effect of taking colace the same as taking a water pill? That is, does it dehydrate you? Please, no need for gross, stupid answers. Really trying to understand and determine if dehydration from colace is what is making me feel run down fatigues.
Answer: While every med book you will ever find on the subject will list "dehydration" as a side effect of Colace, it does NOT have the same effect as a water pill. Colace is a stool softener, that is, it helps your system retain more liquids in your bowel so that they may pass through you without straining. The liquids retained in your bowel by colace are most likely liquids that your body would already be disposing of through your urine. as far as I am aware there is nothing in colace to make your body excrete more liquid than it already does, and nor is it really a laxative because it does not force your bowels to move. My suggestion would be just to push more fluids if you are feeling run down or fatigued, and if this makes you feel better than you are probably dehydrated ... if after a few days of drinking as much fluids as you can tolerate (unless you are on a liquid restriction, of course) you dont start to feel better I would suggest seeing your doctor.
Question: What are the side affects of taking ferrous sulphate 325 mg twice a day? And the side affects of taking colace 100 mg twice a day? Both were prescribed for anemia. Thank you.
Answer: Hi..ferrous sulfate is iron-prescribed to build back up low blood counts. But taking iron pills is VERY constipating. Therefore, the colace was probably prescribed to counteract that nasty side effect of the iron pills. Hope that helps!
Question: Politically speaking, would Colace, properly administered, lead to better government by our leaders? Or am I full of it and in need of my own dose? Thanks for your judicious and thoughtful responses!
Answer: Maybe a little colace, vicodin, and prozac cocktail.
Question: Is Senna or Colace made in an oral suspension for children? I have a 2 1/2 yr old that has chronic problems with constipation...mainly due to her picky diet. Ive tried everything such as pureeing veggies to blend in to try to hide in another food, citrucel, adding more fiber, prune juice, etc. I have an appt with her doctor tomorrow morning, but was curious to see if they actually made this in an oral suspension that I could give to her.
Answer: No, you just get them in tablet or syrup form - but I wouldn't recommend either, especially not senna because that's not a softener, it's a powerful stimulant-irritant laxative, the kind that causes stomach pain and diarrhea.
It's not what you want to hear, I know, but mini-enemas and suppositories are safer for frequent use because they don't have to aggravate the whole intestine to get where they're going! And they empty the lower bowel in only a few minutes.
Question: Is giving Dulcolax (Colace) and Lactulose together safe in a hospital setting? It's for a school project. I can't find this specific info about giving these together anywhere on the web.
Answer: They do the same thing but operate by different mechanisms so they can work synergistically. Common in hospital setting.
Question: How come you never really hear about Colace shoplifting in neighborhoods with a high volume of drug addiction?
Answer: Beats the poop outta me!
Question: Is taking Colace 50mg bad after taking Fleet enema the day before? So I took Fleet enema yesterday night, did not work for me. I haven't pooped in a week and 2 days. I went to the doctors and I forgot to tell him about me taking enema yesterday. Can someone tell me if that can damage me in some way?
Answer: No it shouldn't hurt you as Colace is a softener; however, I would take a Fleet mineral oil enema and retain it for at least an hour (it does not produce an urge to go). Then I would take a 1 to 2 quart soap suds enema using either Ivory bar soap or castile soap until the solution was milky. I would try to retain that for at least 15 minutes and repeat until the bag was empty. Then I would follow that with a couple of 2 quart warm water enemas with a teaspoon of salt added per quart of water to remove the soap and oil residue. Do not trust a fart for the next day or so as it will most likely be oily. The other option is to skip the oil and go for the SSE and warm water enemas by themselves.
Question: has anyone else experienced weird dreams when taking colace? okay so both my brother and i have been talking colace and we both have been having really really really strange dreams. has anyone else experienced this and should i be worried?
Answer: Colace is a very, very non-toxic laxative. I'm thinking it's nothing but mineral oil in a gelatin capsule. I think I'd check what you had for dinner before I'd blame it on colace.

Question: Is taking Colace everyday realy safe during pregnancy? I'm currently pregnant and have had problems w/ chronic constipation for years now. Now that I'm pregnant, the constipation is alot worse. I asked my ob/gyn about it and she recommended Colace. She said it was ok to take everyday during my pregnancy. Just wondering though if anyone ever actually did this during their pregnancy and was the baby ok? Also, does anyone continue to take Colace even after the birth of your baby or did you find that you became regular after having the baby?
Answer: It should be safe since your doctor said it was, but taking any medication everyday during pregnancy can cause problems. You should try eating a high fiber diet along w/ supplementing w/ Metamucil or something similar. Also make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of water a day.

Question: Why must you drink plenty of water while taking colace? I'm taking colace 100mg a day and I was given direction from the doctor to take two Vegetable Laxatives in the morning and two at night. I'm not constipated but I have rectal bleeding due to tons of internal hemorrhoids so my stool needs to be soft to help prevent any extra damage. But why is it so important there is a sticker on the RX bottle that says drink plenty of water while taking this medication?
Answer: Because, over time, the taker can become dehydrated. Many medicines can cause a water depletion effect due to how they work in conjunction with treating a problem.

Question: Why can't I use Mineral Oil and Colace together? I remember a few years back when my family doctor prescribed both to me and they worked wonders. Now, when I was feeling a bit constipated and bloated I figured I would try both again but it always states on labels of both medications not to use together. Anybody have an answer?
Answer: mineral oil should not be consumed or used on the skin as it depletes the body of all vitamin e and is unhealthy.
it also inhibits the absorption of the importan vitamin c and d
Question: does anyone know where you can buy colace suppositories? grandma like this brand and she cant find it anymore.
Answer: Amazon.com has them. And Walgreens used to carry them but maybe not in all stores - I've noticed a lot of stores have cut back on things that don't sell well..

Question: Why is a stool softener with laxative not recommended in pregnancy? Like peri colace?
Answer: Because laxative can cross the placenta causing the baby to pass meconium, or the first poop while still inside.
Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit and vegetable. Probiotics are safe during pregnancy and will often help for constipation.
