Cartilage
A type of connective tissue
Question: Cartilage? I got my cartilage pierced 6 months ago and I cleaned it with this thing they gave me everyday for 2 months. Now I barely noticed theres this bump beneath my cartilage. What is that and will it go away? Sometimes my cartilage bleeds and clear stuff comes out. also when can i like take the earring off? i just want to take it off to makes sure everything is clean than put it back on but i'm scared. plz help thank u
Answer: The bump doesn't mean it's infected.
The bump is hypertrophic scarring, and will leave a link about them and how to get rid of them.
Cartilage piercings take about a year to heal, even longer if you got it pierced with a piercing gun. Clear stuff (lymph) is normal in a healing piercing, and if you're rotating it blood is also normal. If your rotating it, stop. It's doing no good for your piercing and is causing you unnecessary pain.
You have to wait until the piercing heals to change the jewelry, if it's still producing lymph and bleeding it's nowhere near healed yet. If you take the jewelry out even for a minute, you have a higher risk of an infection and a very angry piercing.
Just keep doing sea salt soaks until it heals. I don't know what "this thing" is but if it's anything from a piercing gun place, stop using it. Chances are it's a great harbor for bacteria to live and grow in -- infection causing bacteria
Question: cartilage?? okayy so i go my cartilage pierced about less than a week ago, and right now its starting to hurt a lot, feels like theres a heart beat in my cartilage. is this normal or is it infected?!?
Answer: IT IS NORMAL!!! don't worry about it as long as you are following directions on cleaning it then you'd be fine..when you start noticing a bump and it will not go down within a week or 2 then you have to remove it beause it got an infection but go see your piercer before removing it because if you remove it then the ball will close and the infection will not heal and will stay inside the bump you can also see a doctor for that as well...
i have my cartilage pierced and it is gonna hurt A LOT for a long while...it takes a long time for it to heal so its normal...
dial soap is good for cleaning it, NEVER use alcohol though

&& im curious to know, is table salt mixed with warm water, ok? would it take down the swollen? i had my piercing since sat.
Answer: No, table salt is not good. It must be non iodized sea salt (1/8-1/4 tsp) mixed with warm water (distilled or bottled).
Question: How bad does a cartilage piercing in your upper ear hurt? How bad does a cartilage piercing in your upper ear hurt? I want to get one of those bars that connect two cartilage piercings and I actually have my nose pierced and my ears triple pierced which didn't hurt at all but I've heard mixed stories about cartilage piercings. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Answer: First things first - you should NEVER, EVER have a cartilage piercing done with a gun. Even the makers of piercing guns (Inverness and Studex) state right in their instructions that they should NEVER be used on anything other than your earlobes because of the trauma to the skin and damage to cartilage that it causes. Don't just go for "who has the cutest earrings" - wait until they're healed!!!
Cartilage can shatter (much like bone would) and with a gun piercing, will take far longer healing and much longer pain.
There are other reasons that you should never be pierced (at all) with a piercing gun, but we'd be here all day - for more info on that, go to the Association of Professional Piercer's website at www.safepiercing.org for more info on that (check out the FAQ).
All in all, do you REALLY want someone who's been "trained" by watching a 15 minute video that doesn't even MENTION cartilage? I doubt it.
There is no numbing that you can do for cartilage - and even so, if there were, they'd have to stick a needle in your ear in order to numb it. Topical ointments only numb the skin.
Helix (upper ear cartilage) piercings are generally one of the longest healing times for any body piercing, being 6 months to a full year or longer for a good solid heal - THAT is with a needle piercing. It's usually near twice the healing time for a gun piercing due to increased trauma.
The reason for this - although there is sufficient bloodflow to the area, the blood vessels are far too small to transport oxygen to the upper ear. Oxygen is needed to heal wounds, and since this is not an option, the healing time increases and you have to care for it much more than any other traditional piercing.
And last, but not least, unfortunately pain is relative to the person getting pierced - which means that some people will find it painful, while others will not. In general, a helix piercing, because it's through cartilage, will be slightly more painful than most other body piercings.
Question: How long after a cartilage piercing should you start to clean it? I got my cartilage pierced today (12th Aug) and i've read the aftercare guide for lobe piercings and it says not to touch or clean the piercing for the first 36 hours. Does this apply to cartilage piercings aswell? And some people have been saying not to turn the ear ring but when i got my lobes pierced i had to turn it everytime i cleaned the piercing. Do you still have to turn it for a cartilage piercing?
Answer: You should never, ever, ever rotate the jewelry no matter what the piercers at Piercing Pagoda or people online tell you. That is bad, outdated advice based on the myth that unturned jewelry will grow stuck inside the hole. It's physically impossible. All turning the jewelry does is break down healing tissue and present the risk of infection. Read the article below. It explains, in detail, why turning the jewelry is not good.

You should clean your piercing tonight with saline solution. Never use handsoaps, Bactine, ear cleaning solution from gun piercing salons, peroxide, Betadine, iodine, rubbing alcohol or antibiotic ointments. You can either purchase H2Ocean, isotonic contact lens solution or make the saline solution yourself.
Heat 1 cup of filtered or distilled water and add 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized (it must be a non-iodized salt) sea salt. Use a cotton ball saturated in the solution to gently loosen up crusting. Hold it to the front of the piercing until the heat dissipates. Repeat with a fresh cotton ball. Then do the same thing for the back. Rinse and then dab dry with a dry paper towel. Always make sure your hands are exceptionally clean when doing this.
Do this twice a day and that's it. No other treatment is necessary.
Question: What are the chances of your cartilage collapsing if you get it pierced by a gun? I heard the gun was unsafe, but if you do get your cartilage pierced by the gun, is it common for your cartilage to collapse? I was thinking about going to Merle Norman. Many people have said they have been pierced by the gun and their ear turned out fine. If i get my Cartilage pierced by the gun and clean it on a regular basis, will i be fine? Thanks for all the help!
Answer: I have peirced ears at claire's for a long time......I have heard that people say your cartilege can collapse if you get it done...however of the thousands of ears i have peirced not one thing has happened like that. even talking with my coworkers, they say its never happened to them. And all the ones i've seen them do nothing has happened. If you prefer a needle go that way, but a gun should not do anything.
I had mine done by a gun and it healed fine. You just have to be extra careful with it and when you can put in an endless hoop. Some times the pressure of the backing of the earring against your ear will cause a huge bump...that is what happened to mine. It takes about a year for it to not feel tender and weird anymore. Just make sure you clean it good and often. don't get nething in it and try not to sleep on that side. Mine got infected and i put a hoop in and it was fine....i just dont think I cleaned it enough
just be patient.
Question: What are some different types of cartilage piercings? I've already gotten a couple regular cartilage piercings, and am getting another one sometime soon. Can anyone find some pictures of cartilage piercings that have cool/different placement on the ear? No tragus, rook, or conch piercings please. Just cool placements of cartilage piercings.
Answer: anti tragus, snug, daith, industrial
Question: What does cartilage mean - ie the "cartilage" of a building? According to the dictionary, the only meaning I can find for cartilage is cartilage in the human body ie cartilage in your knee.
But it's also used in building planning applications, specifically when talking about listed buildings, "within the cartilage of the proerty" "the cartilage of a building" "the residential cartilage".
I can't find a definition...does anyone know?
Thanks

Answer: the materials its is constructed from!!! (so they are pointing out that any works carried out on a listed building must be as for like)
Question: How long will it take for the Cartilage piercing hole to close? Hi! I got my ear piercings (on the cartilage) done approximately four months ago. The ears have not been healed and there is a little infection so I have taken my cartilage earring off and I want my piercing hole to close. How long will it take? I don't want my cartilage pierced anymore.
Answer: Alcohol may help to get rid of the infection. I'm sorry but the hole might not close. I had that problem. This was done years ago. Still today I can use earrings if I want to cause it never closed. I had to live with it. Maybe if you are a good healer, then it probably close. Good luck!
Question: Can the cartilage in your nose suddenly move without causing any pain? My housemate woke up and there is a bump on the end of his nose it is noticeable and slightly redish but not too bad. It doesn't hurt him at all to touch it but it feels hard and much like a piece of cartilage has moved there or something. It also appears this way. Upon close inspection you can see how the skin is mildly streched and the pores are not as close as in other areas. Does anybody have any idea if this is possible? Or what this is?
Answer: it may be a small blood clot ,he needs to c a ENT doc!!
Question: How to clean cartilage piercing and how long does it take to heal? I just got my cartilage pierced, upper right ear &i was wondering how to clean it and when will the pain stop &How long does it take for it to heal. Please answer.
Answer: healing time:
it takes about 6 months to 1 year to it to fully heal, but you can change the piercing after 4-8 weeks
what to clean it with:
clean it with saline solution (basically saltwater), you can buy it at drug stores, claires, or make it yourself (look it up online)
how to clean it:
pour some of the saline solution directly on the piercing, or use a cotton ball and drench it in the saline solution and place it on your piercing
+make sure you clean it 2-3 times a day, and if you touch it make sure your hands are clean
Question: Is it safe to get your cartilage pierced while having a staph infection? I am planning on getting my cartilage pierced on my left ear, but I have a staph infection on my right ear lobe. Could this pose any risk factor in obtaining an infection in the cartilage piercing?
Answer: I would not risk doing this at this time. If you have a staph infection manifesting itself on your ear it is most likely present on other areas of your skin. Until the infection is properly treated with the appropriate antibiotic and long gone, I would not chance staph getting into my blood stream and possibly causing boils and all sorts of problems. Get the current infection healed and don't puncture the skin until it is all gone.
Question: What happens after you get your cartilage pierced? I reeeeeeeaally want my cartilage pierced, on my ear, and also my nose pierced too. I was wondering if there were any "side-effects" to getting it done. I heard that with the cartilage piercing, once you take it out there is a permanent hole in your ear afterwards. Is that true? And does anyone know some pros and cons to getting both piercings done?
ALSO - what if you get a cold? like, a runny nose, or conjestion? is that going to hurt/infect the nose piercing?
Answer: I had mine done(ear cartilage) a few years ago. I felt constant pain and couldn't sleep for days. There was no getting comfortable and I had to take it out after about 3 weeks. The hole closed. My ears are small so maybe that had something to do with it but it's something I would never try again. The pain was unbearable.
Question: What is so bad about getting your cartilage pierced with a gun? Everyone says that it is a really bad thing to do, and that your cartilage can shatter, but I've never personally seen or heard about anyone that this has happened to. So, what is so bad about getting your cartilage pierced with a gun?
Answer: It is extreemly unsafe to pierce your body with an ear piercing gun due to many reasons. The gun cannot be cleaned so it can harbour bacteria that can cause dangerous infections, the method of bluntly shooting a pierce of metal into yuor body can cause trauma to the area and end up scaring or shattering the cartilige (which has personaly happend to me and I have one nasty scar from it, I ended up having to have the top of my right ear surgicaly reconstructed) and they cannot be trusted because the tirgger on them can sometimes be bumped causeing it to push the earing through even if the body was not ready. Your safest option is to get your ear pierced by someone who is medicaly trained to do so in a professional shop with sterile equipment.
Question: How long does a cartilage piercing stay open? Which portion and what location are the easiest to care for in a cartilage piercing?
Answer: Good question. I think it depends on several factors: skin type -- sensitive-skinned people take longer to heal; care -- how well you care for it; and luck -- everything in life depends on luck (from my pov).
I had my navel pierced twice. Sexy as it was, and I felt, that area was sensitive for a lot longer than the 6 months that they claimed. Plus, although I cleaned it the recommended twice daily, it still got crusty and puss-y and eventually left a dark mark. It was yucky to look out once I finall went back to them to have it removed. I later described this to a friend to told me that such things would do that to me because I have keloidal skin.
EU... :-(
Question: How long does a cartilage piercing take to heal? I'm thinking about getting my cartilage pierced, but school's starting up again soon, which means Field Hockey is too. I'm pretty sure I can't wear earrings during a game, but just to be sure, I don't want to risk the piercing closing up. How long do they usually take to heal?
Okay , yeah I probably will wait until the seasons over.
Answer: 4-6 weeks, It's best to wait the 6 though. Please don't change it know like they are saying it's okay, It's not. It could get infected, and they grow back incredibly fast. So Just wait the 6 weeks.
Question: How badly should ear cartilage hurt the day after getting it pierced? I just got my cartilage pierced yesterday, and I heard from more than one people that it would hurt for a while, but how badly right away? It's definitely manageable, but if like, any pressure gets applied to it, it hurts pretty badly. Also, there's a little bit of bruising around the area. Everything was sterile and I had it done professionally, but it that normal?
Answer: yess it completely normal.. on the flip side it does hurt like that for a while.. i had mine done since march and it doent hurt.. but if i get it caught it hurts but everybody does that.. i hope i helped
Question: What kind of earrings are allowed with cartilage piercing? What kind of earrings are you allowed to wear in a cartilage piercing? Do you have to wear a special kind just for cartilage piercings? Or are you allowed to use basic posts/studs that you wear in your ear lobe piercings?
Answer: You can wear the same kind as for the lobes :) However they take longer to heal, so don't change them for a while.
Remember, though, many of the $5 earring you can buy are not so healthy for your ears.
Question: How long after a cartilage piercing is done will it stay swollen? I just got my cartilage pierced about 6 days ago and it's still kind of swollen. It also hurts a bit if i try to move my ear (like when im cleaning it). This is normal right? I just want to make sure that it doesn't get infected or anything...
But if it is infected what do i do? Is there a way to fight the infection without having to take out my piercing?
Answer: Its normal for it to hurt for the first few weeks.
I got mine done about 3 months ago and it still hurts if i hit it with a hair brush or something
Mine never really swelled up though
You may wanna see a doctor
Question: How painful is it to get the cartilage on your upper ear pierced? My friend got hers done a little over a month ago and she said it didn't hurt hardly at all. She has her lobes pierced once, plus the one in her cartilage. I have my lobes pierced twice. The lobes didn't hurt at all except for the sting of the alcohol.
And would three piercings in one ear look bad? My mom keeps saying that the two I already have looks bad (I like them and I love my gauges, no matter what anyone says)
So I guess I have two questions. Does the cartilage hurt and would three in one ear be too many?
Answer: It doesn't really hurt, I have both ears pierced this way. Make sure you rotate and clean the area daily though. I also have a double piercing with a barbell running through the top of my right top ear lobe. Use good jewelry made of surgical steel until the piercing takes, you will be just fine.
