Calcification
A process in which tissue becomes hardened as a result of deposition of insoluble salts; can signify local tumor presence
Question: What is calcification in the right lateral aspect of the tentorium cerebelli of the brain? I had a brain scan as I have been getting bad pains at the back of my head. Can this cause headaches? I saw my doctor and he said calcification is just normal.
Answer: See a neurologist. It's time to get a second opinion, as your doctor hasn't offered you any relief from the headaches.
Question: What are the chances a breast calcification is cancer? i found my mom's mammogram results in her room and it said that she had a newly formed breast calcification and that she should have it surgically biopsied... what are the chances it is cancer or will turn into cancer?and what do the different classifications mean or what are they?? Question: How is calcification of the prostrate gland treated. I am on pain killers since my hospital stay at the? weekend for pain management. What is the treatment for this, how long does the condition last and will I get it again. Also will I wee the calcification out like I would a kidney stone. I didn't understand what the dr was telling me on my discharge from the hospital. I had a cat scan which confirmed the problem.
Answer: All glands, and the prostate is simply a gland which produces the nutrients for sperm, suffer from calcification at some point in their career. Women have the same problem with their breasts. Anywhere you have lots of blood sloshing through along with a high secretion rate, calcium can build up in the ducts or arteries. The question, as you so rightly ask, is whether this is a problem. It can result from infection or inflammation - prostatitis. This is not important so long as any infection has been dealt with. There is no good evidence that calcification of the prostate increases your risk from cancer.
If treatment is required then this will usually be with tablets. Drugs from the so called "alpha-blocker" family can help relax the muscle in the prostate and bladder neck and help you to pass urine more easily. More severe cases may require an operation called a TURP (Trans urethral resection of prostate). This is performed with a telescope passed up the urethra (water pipe) under a general anaesthetic. The urologist can remove prostate tissue to widen the channel through the prostate.
Question: How does lemon juice afflict calcification processes in the blood vessels? I have to use large amounts of the juice as a part of my doctor's healing program.Yet I hear it contains much calcium. Is the calcium from lemon juice able to fasten vessels calcification?Any other side effects from drinking it?If yes, please warn me about them
Answer: It has no effect on blood vessels. It's a fruit juice.
I doubt if you could drink enough to cause any harm, its SO sour!
It will just be digested.
Question: What is focal central disc protrusion with calcification at the L5-S1 producing impression on thecal sac? I had a CT for something else, and the radiologist found a problem with my back. The report said there was a focal central disc protrusion with calcification at the L5-S1 level producing a subtle impression on the anterior aspect of the thecal sac.
I'm waiting on the doctor to call. What does this mean? Should I be concerned because I'm only 26? Any experiences?
Answer: You have a small herniated disc in your back - this is actually a fairly normal finding and a lot of people have them, they only cause symptoms in a percentage of the population. The impression on the thecal sac indicates it is abutting one of the multiple layers surrounding and holding the last of the nerves exiting your spinal cord (called the cauda equina) (although your spinal cord ends at about L1-L2, inches higher than your herniated disc). Calcifications are really non-specific and generally nothing to worry about. All in all, if you aren't experiencing any symptoms from this, they are all incidental and relatively benign findings. Follow up with your doctor on your concerns, he should be able to reassure you. Good luck!
Question: What happens when you have cranial calcification? What is the cause and long term effect of this calcification?
Answer: cranial is relating to the brain
calcification is when a bone or something calcifies, or hardens. I'd imagine that the situation is not good when that happens.
talk to your doctor.
Question: What does it mean to have calcification of the ribs? I have been having lots of pain in by back and stomach area, feeling sore to the touch. Have had tons of blood work done. Started going to a chiropractor who did some xray's and found some calcification on the tips of my ribs...does this mean anything bad. She said not to worry but is this normal? When I lay on my stomach it feels hard and uncomfortable almost like I am laying on something. What could this mean?
Answer: Your doctor is right, it's nothing to worry about.
Calcification is a process in which a mineral called calcium builds up in body tissue, causing the tissue to harden. This can be a normal or abnormal process.
Ninety-nine percent (99%) of calcium entering the body is deposited in bones and teeth. The remaining 1% of calcium is dissolved in the blood.
When a disorder affects the balance between calcium and other minerals or chemicals in the body, calcium can be deposited in other parts of the body, such as arteries, kidneys, lungs, and brain. Calcium deposits in these parts of the body can cause problems with how these blood vessels and organs work
Question: What is 'ligament calcification' in the following case please? Lady, aged 45, had pain under armpits for 2 years. Xray of area today revealed 'ligament calcification'. She also has pain in other shoulder and right hip. Her GP did not explain what this is and she is very frightened. He suggested Physios should try to "elongate" her ligaments. Does anyone have any knowledge of this and what might help/hinder her path to coping with the condition? She has been on HRT for 2 years. Hysterectomy 2006.
Answer: Ligaments become less flexible as people age, partly because a small amount of calcium replaces tissues that are more elastic. The loss of flexibility is faster in people with arthritis, joint problems, or joint injuries.
When ligament damage from overuse or an injury causes chronic inflammation, or when a joint is frequently inflamed by arthritis, the inflammation sometimes causes the ligament to harden from deposition of calcium. A hardened ligament is less flexible than a normal ligament, which can create an achy joint and limit the range of motion at the troubled joint.
A large amount of calcification can make a joint painful and unusable.
People can fight off or even reverse calcification with stretching and exercise. If a person has arthritis, it is very important to remain active to prevent or reduce calcification.
Elongating ligaments through stretching takes some work, and a month or more to get noticeable results. Elongation is nothing more than stretching with the purpose of increasing the range of motion. This usually involves some type of warm up to soften the ligament as much as possible, followed by stretching exercises designed to push the joint slightly farther than it can move comfortably. If done correctly, a person feels a little sore the next day or two - similar to the aches that happen from spending a day gardening.
Sometimes, the stretching doesn't produce any results and medication to break up the calcium is needed. In such cases, a common approach is to inject cortisone into the ligament. Cortisone removes calcium from the ligament. The injection is very painful for a a minute or two, but once the cortisone starts working, the joints usually loosen up and feel great for 3-6 months or more.
Question: what does mediastinal calcification in small lymph nodes mean? I have been having heart issues for 5 months now and my most recent test was a 320 CT heart angiogram. The one thing it said was "there appears to be mediastinal calcification presumably located in small lymph nodes". I have no idea what that means and the doctor said everything was fine. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks for your help and God bless.
Answer: Its nothing bad.
Lymph nodes often become calcified and hardened for various reasons. Normally because they have swollen several times in the past from infections.
Most people will have these in their bodies at some point in their lives.
Question: Does calcification in thyroid nodules mean you have cancer? Ok so I had a thyroid biopsy done because there were multiple nodules found in my thyroid. I was told they are about 2 cm, (the 2 largest ones) The tech and the doctor that was performing the biopsy they said that I had calcification in the nodules, from what I saw the calcification was a little less than half the size of the actual nodule. Now does this indicate thyroid cancer?
Answer: Actually, calcified nodules of the thyroid account for only about 5% or so of thyroid cancers in general.
What needs to be done at this point is have the pathologist take a look at them to be sure.
A thyroid uptake scan is usually done BEFORE any biopsy would be done -- typically looking for what are termed "cold nodules." These are suspicious for cancer.
Best of luck to you!
Question: Do willow trees perform leaching or calcification? To get water in the soil, do willow trees perform leaching or calcification?
Answer: In some areas around landfills or polluted water, willows are being used to help draw out the pollution from the soil. The water they withdraw is called leachate as it has leached poisons out of the area that were in the soil water.
However, it is not recommended to plant willows near a leach-field of a septic system since they grow into the field and decrease its ability to work efficiently.
Calcification refers to having calcium salts solidify. No reference to Willows
Question: I sufffer with chronic pancreatitis, and alsoacute pancreatitis, there is dense bone calcification on the tail there is dense bone calcification on the tail end of my pancreas, can someone recommend a cure for my condition, i dont consume alcohol, and my pancreas is cery painful. Will somebody out ther please help me!
Answer: my mother of 85 years suffers from this. i don't understand it but want to know more. thanks for asking here. i will be watching for some wise-head to clear it up. been intending to do some searches on this. again, thanks for posting the question before i did.
Question: can anyone tell me what calcification of iliopsoas and tendon is? My father has just had his results back from a hip x-ray saying that he has calcification of iliopsoas and tendon but no explanation as to what this is or what this will do or if its treatable, can anybody throw some light on this?
Answer: If a tendon has decreased blood supply, the tendon tissue slowly deteriorates and replaced by calcium deposit as a natural process. This normally occurs in the rotator cuff tendons of the shoulder.
Is your father obese? So that when he sits around the mass of fat will compress on the tendon located on the inner side of his pelvis and medial to the level of thigh facing the groin area. Have him take Niacin that is a Vitamin that moves the blood and tell him not sit and lean forward.
Question: What is calcification problem around joints? I have calcification problem on my right shoulder .
What causes this problem?
Is this problem cureable medically.?
Answer: Well it's calcium depositis in you joints is what it is. It can be caused if you have some types of arthritis. and they usually give a med called mobic for it
Question: what causes calcification of the lymph nodes, especially the ones of the respiratory system?
I had a chest x-ray as part of a routine physical due to new employment. I have had no major health problems. The chest x-ray was normal but did show calcification of some of the lymph nodes. I have no symptoms, is this anything to worry about?
Answer: Likely, there was some significant infection, inflamation at some point! This can eventually evolve into a calcification. You will have to have the insight of the physician working this up and his correlation of other testing and clinically what everything looks like. I am only giving you "one" possible explaintion...so follow through or comply with what is necessary to arrive at a definitive answer. Not enough information to go on.
That is my best answer!
Question: What is calcification of the anterior falx cerebri? Causes and cure? My CT Scan showed that I have 0.03cm elongated calcification along the left side of the anterior falx cerebri. I want to know what this means, its causes and cure?
Answer: this is usually a common finding in normal patients, especially as you get older. the falx cerebri is part of your dura, which is the covering over the brain.
sometimes meningiomas (benign tumors) might present as calcifications, but this is much less likely than it being normal. not knowing your medical history or why you had imaging done, i can't tell you for sure- i can only play odds and give you the most likely explanation.
if you are still worried, i would suggest you talk to your doctor about the radiology report and ask them to explain things to you.
Question: Where can i find information on the term breast calcification? I'm just looking for more inforomation on that subject.
Answer: Here's a good site:http://mayoclinic.com/health/breast-canc…
Question: Can I use lemon juice in my cats plastic food bowl to prevent calcification and mold? I'm wondering if I can just put a few drops in the actual water or wipe some juice around with a paper towle and then fill with water.
Answer: I solve this problem by having two water bowls. I simply switch them out twice a day, morning and night. If you let the bowl completely dry between uses, you wont have any mold or bacteria build up!
I give them a good scrubbing once a week to prevent any hard water calcification.
Question: What is the link from ocean acidification and marine calcification? Hey Guys,
The questions the title, what is the link between these two things?
Sara
Answer: This is a Biology question and a very good one!
I am NOT a Biologist and have little experience with it but I have read that some marine organisms which secrete CaCO3 in their shells, actually use the increased acidification to increase secretion of Carbonate skeletons.
It is puzzling to me that in the Devonian, CO2 levels were 2200-4400 PPM and yet this was an extremely prolific period of Reef Growth, despite incessantly rising sea levels and Lower Ph levels. Remember that "acidification" still means that the Ocean waters are very Basic at about 8.0 to 8.2 vs a "normal" of 8.3-8.4.
Ask this in the Biology Section. I will check your responses in there!
Question: Calcium deposit (calcification) on my brain causing sinus and headaches? I recently went to the doctor because of sinus, allergies and headaches. They did a CT scan and flund I have calcification (calcium buildup) on the left of my sagittal sinus (brain section). Wondering if because this is on the part of the brain that control sinus flow if that's why I've had problems with my sinus?
Answer: No. The Sagittal Sinus is the large vein that collects blood from the brain and drains into the Internal Jugular Vein. You have one on either side of the head. Many people get calcifications in the venticles and sinuses of the brain without any issue, in fact you wouldn't even know it's there if someone hadn't told you.
