Question: anorexia???????????????????????? when is the point a patient diagnoses with anorexia needs to be admitted to the hospital?

Answer: usually it's when they have potentially life-threatening physical complications, or their anorexia is too severe to treat with simply an outpatient program. most of the time though, an anorexic can be treated in an outpatient with a general practitioner, nutritionist, and psychiatrist/therapist.

Question: Anorexia?? I have been struggling with anorexia for the past two years on and off. I feel as though im never going to get out of this cycle. I just hate my body. I have an intense fear of gaining weight and that no one will like me. Has anyone on here ever suffered from anorexia or bulimia? If so any advice that would help me? Any information is appreciated.

Answer: Well, I was anorexic for about eighteen months until my mom basically forced me to eat and gain weight even though the whole hating my body thing was still there....but one thing that helped me finally get out of it, for the most part, was my mom took all the scales out of the house and she got rid of all the mirrors, except for the ones over the bathroom sink so I couldn't see myself in the mirror (like my whole body), and when she would pack my lunch she's black out the nutritional information, so I wouldn't freak out about the calories, and she had my friends make sure that I ate, and if they said that I did, she'd give me a point and at the end of the month if I had a certain number of points I got to go shopping and she'd buy me a new outfit (which was almost a necessity since my weight changed so much). This seemed a little drastic to me, but in the long run I was happy and I gained enough weight to be back at a healthy-is weight (I have a BMI of 18, which is borderline anorexic). Sometimes when I feel myself slipping back into the urge to think bad stuff about my body and become anorexic again, I spend time with people who love me for who I am, like my boyfriend and my friends and relatives and they help me through. Answer: Well I cant speak for everyone but back in the day when i went that route for a lil while I was hooked on eating an extremely small amount of Iceberg lettuce with water. Gum was a bit of an addiction because the sugar in it was a substitute for food... it kinda nullified the hunger pangs a bit. For me, ice aside, that was about it. Or little bits of fruit or cucumber. Pretty much anything water based.

Answer: Food is what keeps us healthy...you shouldn't be thinking fat or skinny right now, you should be thinking vitamins, minerals. I mean your heart is a muscle....it needs real food. Otherwise you are self destructive and killing yourself and yes...you need help. Take a nutrition class. I took one in college and it gave me a whole new perspective on how the body works. Gardenburgers are good for you...and all those things. I dare you to gain 10 pounds.

Every time i try to talk to her about it, she just says to stay out of her personal business. then she tells me that if i tell anyone, that she will make it so that no one will believe me. any tips on how to help her without ruining our friendship? Answer: Oh my gosh I know how she feels. I was Anorexic, and I hated it when my very best friend said anything to mme about it. But my parents already knew. My advice is to a) Invite her for dinner to show your parents so they get the hint that something is wrong (if your parents and your friend know each other well.) Then ask your Mum to ring her Mum and say "*friends name* is looking very thin and my husband and I were very worried as she wouldn't eat much while she was here is she okay?" {{{Honestly, if you tell your Mum in confidence, and beg her not to mention you when she rings, it'll be fine, your mum will understand}}} or... b) Try and make her illness look obvious, but subtly, like above) c) She may aspire to be a model? If she does, tell her that you need to be at least 5"9, and you WON'T GROW UNLESS YOU EAT. d) Tell a teacher to mention it to her annonomously, eg ask a teacher to say "a member of staff saw you eating very little at lunch" or ask a teacher to mention it to her parents. e) Ask if she wants her bones to crumble. f) Have a good cry with her. HONESTLY THOUGH! You must tell somebody. Personally, I like a), thats the technique I used when I thought my friend was heading in the Anorexia path. Would you rather save her life, or help anorexia ruining her life, because it isn't your friend telling you not to tell, It is the anorexia that has locked her away. Somewhere inside her she wants to beg for help, but the anorexic urge is too strong. You could also help her eat by not limiting your intake (not dieting) SHOW HER WHAT A NORMAL PERSON EATS! Answer: Anorexia is just a shortened version of Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa is a bit more of a scientific, or technical term. If someone has the eating disorder, they'll say "I have anorexia.", not,"I have Anorexia Nervosa."

Question: What is the diffrence between bulimia and binge and purge anorexia? Hi, I am doing a research paper on eating disorders, and in my research, I have found that there are two sub types of anorexia- restricting and the binging and purging type. To me, the binging purging anorexia sounds very much like bulimia. If you could tell me the distinguishing characteristics between the binging purging type of anorexia and bulimia, that would really help with the report. THANKS!!!!

Question: What is the best anorexia recovery book? Please give me your advice! Can you tell me the name of the very best book/books to help me recover from Anorexia? I don't have much money to spend. Answer: Hey Im currently suffering with anorexia myself. I have found the list of books really helpful.... -Mind over Mood (its a workbook). But then again, I am still battling, but I have to admit that my mood is MUCH better and my self esteem is really improving. The documentary "THIN" really helps give an insight of the inpatient treatment and actually makes you cringe at the thought of inpatient, so it motivates you to work at it so that you dont have to resort to it. Another documentary is the INTERVENTION series, especially those on anorexia or other eating disorders. They shed light and actually document the life of those suffering from ED. It is like you are watching yourself. Its good to see your life from the ersective of others, and see that your not so weird, and that you can get better. Answer: Anorexia is not eating at all or eating tooooooo little. Bulimia is binging-purging either by throwing up or by exercising too much. Both are not advisable and are harmful to one's health.

Question: What is the difference between binge/purge type anorexia, and bulimia? I am doing a research paper on eating disorders and I know there is two types of anorexia nervosa. Restrictive type & Binge/Purge type. But how does binge/purge type anorexia differ from bulimia? Can someone explain?

Answer: AN b/p type aka AN subtype II is diagnosed instead of bulimia when the individual's weight falls below a certain level (bmi 17.5, or 85% or less ideal body weight - doctors differ on which criteria they use as the DSM specifies both, sorta). Someone with AN-b/p may binge and purge (ie, "like bulimia") or just purge wihout bingeing. But the PRIMARY and ONLY difference between the two diagnoses: Weight, as well as fitting the other dx criteria for Anorexia Nervosa, which is loss of menses of 3+ months. So when someone fits dx criteria for AN but they b/p, they are dx as that instead of BN. Make sense?? One cannot have 2 simultaneous diagnoses, so that's why the DSM was adapted to include the b/p subtype of anorexia nervosa.

Question: Why isn't extreme body building considered a mental disorder but anorexia and others is? Ever wonder this? Obviously anorexia nervosa is a recognized mental disorder that can lead to death. But, why isn't extreme bodybuilding? You know where men take steroids and looking so unaturally buff and extremely unhealthy. I mean obviously anorexia nervosa and exteme bodybuilding are caused by emotional, biological, and environmental factors. But I just don't understand why extreme body building isn't considered a mental disorder? Is it because you don't have a chance of dying, unlike anorexia?

Answer: It is. Its called bigorexia. Obsessed with the Perfect Body: Bigorexia Interestingly, both male bulimics and body builders seem to be equally over-concerned with weight and shape. Both feel that body shape is just as important as friends or work. Furthermore, distortions in thinking can be seen by the fact that body builders are just as unhappy with their bodies as non athlete male bulimics, which leads many to anabolic steroid use to get bigger, leaner, and more muscular. These men feel too small and want to increase the size of various upper body parts at any cost. It is no wonder that some have termed this obsession as "reverse anorexia," "bigorexia," or "muscle dysmorphia." Researchers believe that this is a form of body dysmorphic disorder, a disorder whereby a person feels they are physically flawed despite appearing perfectly normal. This may also be related to the condtion called obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is on the spectrum that includes bulimia nervosa.

Answer: like others here, that is exactly how it started for me. about this time last year, i decided to start exercising and eating healthy. by the end of summer i was over- exercising and eating less and less.eventually i began to eat so little i could no longer exercise and became a full-blown anorexic. many people tend to think that anorexia happens overnight- in reality, that is very rare. many sufferers fall to anorexia gradually, with the smallest things, which soon turn into very large ones. hope this helped!

Well unfortunately many young women today, who are trying to fit in, are actually dying from anorexia just so they can fit a image that they see in magazines and on T.V. of super skinny women. Question: How to help a best friend that has anorexia? My best friend has anorexia and im the only one she feels comfortable around eating! I'm always there for her no matter what. She does not make herself sick in any way and i would like to know what else can i do to help her?

Answer: It is perfectly normal for some-one who is recovering from an eating disorder to only feel comfortable eating around their closest friends or their family. Just wondering though is your friend recovering (been diagnosed) or does no one know about the eating problems other than you?
