Alopecia
Loss of hair; can be caused by genetics, disease, malnutrition, or hormone imbalance
Question: .......Alopecia? I recently found out that one of my friends has alopecia. I was just wondering if it was only temporary.
Answer: It depends. There are three types of alopecia: areata, universalis, and totalis.Totalis you lose all your body hair. Universalis you lose your hair from your head & face. Areata you lose your head hair in patches. Alopecia is an auto immune disease where your white blood cells attack the roots of your hair and kill it.. It's like being "allergic" to your hair. Her hair MAY grow back. It depends. it is not contagious and does not affect her health in any way. I have a friends whose sister has it. A lot of people don't know about this auto-immune disease. Please tell people not to make fun of people with this condition. It is NOT cancer. never try to pity your friend either. Please be a supportive friend. BTW we don't know what causes Alopecia, but it could be stress, pressure, or rosiola virus. Her hair may come back, but for now don't count on it. Don't judge her. Hope this helps. Good luck to you and your Friend!! :)
Question: Does alopecia areata have anything to do with asthma or allergies. Can i heal alopecia areata any way? I am 12 almost 13 and in seventh grade and have had alopecia since the summer before third grade. I am really sick of having it and i have lost it fully a couple of times and a little several times. I am desperate of getting rid of alopecia so if you could tell be if there are any cures for it and if it is related to astma and alleriges or stress. Any other information would also be greatly apreciated.
Answer: Sweetie, I wish there was a cure- heck from what I have read they don't even know what causes it. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago, thankfully I have only had spots. I did the steroid injections and it helped me. People kept telling me it was stress, but there was no new stresses in my life, so I don't believe that.
Keep your chin up, educate people about it.
Are you totally bald?
Question: What are the reasons and cure for alopecia? I have come across many cures on alopecia but still I am not convinced. Do these cures needn’t be effective on everybody? Does one need to first consult his/her Doc? Some cures are really scary; the impact would be on one's hormonal imbalance. Can anybody, who is an expert in this field, advice me on this?
Answer: having been in the hair buisness for 30 odd years i have seen a lot of alopecia in all ages both male and female ,
the cause seems to be stress related ,being put under pressure in many different ways you might not be aware or show outward signs of this but your body can and does so in different ways .the scalp normally pales in the affected area .
the hair can return in your natural colour but usually returns white but it always comes back, doctors are grasping at straws for a cure with no success . so no cure but yourself, so unwind and take life as it comes without any pressure on yourself.
hope this helps
Question: How long does it take for alopecia to heal after starting wheat-free diet? I have alopecia areata. I've read reports that people with alopecia have reversed their hair loss by following a wheat-free/gluten-free diet. I'm willing to try it, but I'm wondering how long of a trial would be a fair test. How long did it take for YOUR hair to grow back after starting a wheat free diet? I'm looking for first-hand experiences here, please don't just drop a URL--I've already read a lot on the web. Thanks.
Answer: My bro managed to find a website called http://www.ALOPECIA-AREATA-CURE.com when he had the same problem that explains about the condition and suggests treatment. He gave it a try and to all our surprise he recovered.
Its quite informative. You might want to give it a try. Wish you a quick recovery
Question: How do I give my cat Alopecia? I want to see what my cat looks like without hair, how do I give her alopecia so that it all falls out?
She wont run away, its hot today and she's soo hairy she must be too hot, so it'd be good for her as well.
Answer: You want to see her with no hair? well I don't think it'd be a good idea but I guess you can take her to the groomer for them to shave the hair off. I don't even know why I'm posting this. I don't even agree with what you want to do. It's mean.
Question: What hair products are safe with alopecia areata? My mom has alopecia areata and is currently undergoing treatment but I am wondering if certain hair products (shampoos, dyes) are considered to affect hair regrowth?
Answer: if i had this problem i would wash my hair in the purest soap form possible and that would be something called Green Soft Soap which might be available in chemist or pharmacy...with your Mom already taking medication i would avoid heavy chemical hair products for the moment....i have an old book and it says that for hair restorers there is a choice of lavender, lime, nasturtium, nettle and thyme so maybe you could ask at a Herbalist or Health Food store/shop and see what they have got there for hair...hope this helps..s
Question: How does pregnancy affect the mother when she has Alopecia Areata? I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata about a year and a half ago. It is mostly under control. I regrew all the hair after my first episode. I didn't have another episode until a few months ago and it happened after a very stressful event in my family. The hair is now regrowing again. I've only had two episodes. I have two kids ages 12 and 7. I am thinking about having another child and wonder if my Alopecia Areata will be worse, the same or completely unaffected by pregnancy?
Answer: I have had alopecia for 23 years (i am now 28 years old), in all its forms, but have leveled out at alopecia totalis for the last 15 years or so of it. (just loss of hair on scalp)
While i was pregnant with my twins (who have no sign of alopecia) my condition did not change, but *after* i had them, with hormones and body trying to regulate themselves to pre-pregnancy levels, for the first time since i was in 4th grade, I lost my eyelashes and eyebrows. (i'd forgotten how different my face looked without them!)
I hadn't gone to the doctor for my alopecia since i was in gradeschool, but decided to go this time. He gave me prednisone (sp?) a type of steriod commonly used to treat alopecia and I hated it.
The eyelashes and eyebrows grew back within a couple weeks. I think they would have done so with or without the sterioid.
So to make a long, rambling story short...there were some short term effects, but everything went back to normal (normal for me, anyway) after a couple weeks. I think is just took some time for my body to adjust to not being pregnant anymore.
Everyone reacts differently to different things, and alopecia is a completely unpredictable disease. It may not change at all, or may even get better. This was just my experience.
Question: I have alopecia and why does my hair grow back when I get mad and yell? I have alopecia in spots and when I yell, it starts growing the roots. What is wrong with me?? What is the cause of it then?
Answer: the exact cause of alopecia is not known but it has a very definite relationship with stress, however, most people lose their hair with stress, you are the only only who get his hair back with stress. a dermatologist may be helpful to you but I wouldn't expect much
Question: When suffering from alopecia - will dying your hair make for a greater hair loss? I am 26 years old and have dyed my hair since I was 16. I recently was diagnosed with alopecia. Can i still dye my hair or will that make more hair fall out? I currently have roots that i wanted to touch up but am afraid I'll lose more/all of my hair!
Answer: Dying your hair shouldn't make more hair fall out. (I have had alopecia since I was 12 - off and on... now, just on) If the hair is going to fall out, then it will fall out. The process of dying your hair may even help. If the dye is irritating to your scalp, it may direct the immune cells to your scalp instead of your hair follicles. Thats how many topical treatments work, however, they are used daily, not just once.
Question: Can color dilution alopecia happen in a blk/tan doberman? My dog is almost 3 years old and has all the symptoms of color dilution alopecia but she is a black and tan not a blue or fawn. Can she have it?
She has been to the vet. No mange and the vet doesn't think its thyroid based on her appearance. She does have a tan/brown undercoat over most of her body that is only supposed to be allowed around the neck area.
Answer: Your dog cannot have Color Dilution Alopecia ("CDA") because it isn't a Dilute. To determine the cause of her hair loss, look first to her breeder. Do you still keep in contact with her breeder? The breeder should be able to let you know if the parents or other littermates have any baldness. If they do, then this is purely a genetic baldness pattern. If you can't contact the breeder, then keep in mind that there is no way to know if this is simply baldness.
My next guess, however, would be allergies. Is she scratching or licking a lot? Does she get any yeast infections? Any itchy ears or eyes? Or goop in her eyes? If she has any of these symptoms, she may have allergy problems. Since most kibbles have the same ingredients, buying an expensive kibble won't fix this problem - first you have to know what she's allergic to. I'd say you need to do 1 of 2 things: (1) Put her on an elimination diet, where you feed her one novel protein (i.e., a protein source she hasn't been exposed to before - so if her kibble has chicken and beef in it, try buying a kibble with just fish in it) and nothing else. If you ask at the pet store (try a local independent pet store), they should be able to help you find a good kibble. No treats, no nothing, just the kibble. For 2 months, minimum, to see if her symptoms cease and her hair starts coming back in. OR... (2) Put her on a raw diet. Most dogs that are on raw diets stop having allergy problems pretty quickly. Since most kibbles have some sort of grain or other gluten source, if that's what they're allergic to, then no kibble will help. On raw, their coats, and everything else about their general health, improve unbelievably. It's great. Not to mention the smaller, less frequent bowel movements and the decrease in the amount of gas expelled from their guts! Heaven. If you'd like to learn more about raw feeding, please check out the Yahoo! Group "Rawfeeding."
If you really don't think it's genetics or allergies, then the thyroid would be the next place to look. She's a bit young to be showing symptoms at 3 years, but it's not impossible. Has she recently developed any behavioral problems like unexpected aggressive outbursts (another symptom of thyroid problems)? If you choose to test her thyroid, don't have your regular vet do it - just have him draw the sample and send it to Dr. Dodds. Just do a Google search for "Dr. Dodds Hemopet" and you'll find all the information you need to get this done. Dr. Dodds tests all 6 thyroid factors, whereas most vets only test four. And they analyze the results based on the sex, age and breed of the animal, instead of just generalizing all dogs as having the same healthy levels. This is definitely the way to go.
Question: Can shaving a pomeranians hair too short cause alopecia? I had my pomeranian groomed a month ago and she has a few patches that arent growing back. The groomer shaved her har way too short. The rest of her hair has grown out. What could cause this? Could the bad haircut cause alopecia?
Answer: It can grow back different...kinda fuzzy and yes in some areas thinner. After a few months I think those areas usually fill in. It isn't about your groomer shaving the pom too short. If it is your choice to have your Pom shaved there really is only one way and that is down to the skin. This is due to the Poms coat with a thick undercoat. This breed is not meant to be shaved. It should be brushed daily with additional attention about Feb Mar when they start blowing that winter coat and again in the fall when they shed the summer coat to grow the winter coat. Fair warning...a shaved down Pom is more prone to sunburn. Good Luck and hope her coat grows back without patches of baldness. BTW...I have groomed for years and never had a Pom be completely BALD in spots when full grown.

Question: what is the inheritance of alopecia areata? What is the inheritance pattern of alopecia areta. I would appreciate it if you would give me a site for it.?

Question: Is regular hair gel bad for your hair if you have alopecia? I am 16 years old and I have been diagnosed with alopecia since I was 2. I was wondering if I put regular hair gel in my hair, is that not good for my hair, seeing as I have alopecia?
Answer: I have alopecia too. Some sites say that you should be very gentle with your hair, don't use hairspray, gel ect. to help keep as much as you can. But I belong to an online support group and everyone on there says do whatever you want, it doesn't really matter wether you use products like this or not your hair will do what it wants either way. I continue to color my hair and use hairspray as I want and it does not seem to make the hair fall out any worse than usual. Also using the products helps me to cover the spots. If I don't use hairspray the wind blows my hair and shows my bald spots!!!!

Question: Are there any UK organisations or charities which accept donated hair for making wigs for alopecia? I'm looking specifically for an alopecia (permanent hair loss) charity as opposed to a cancer charity as most cancer patients use synthetic wigs as opposed to using real hair. The hair I'm getting cut is about 15 inches long which seems to meet most requirements. Thanks for any answers.
Answer: Locks of Love accepts hair from any country.
