Allergy
Hypersensitivity or reaction to environmental factors or substances such as foods or medication
Question: allergy??? my pit has a white spot on his skin(no hair) do you think because of his food? im feeding him natural choice... or is it because of the shampoo? i use to give him a bath 3x a week... the vet said use the johnson baby shampoo then give him a bath 1x week. should i change his food to I AMS to see if his allergy to natural choice?
Answer: Only try one thing at a time. I would do what the vet said first. 3x a week may be a bit excessive and you could be drying out his skin. The Johnson's baby shampoo is very mild and wont zap the moisture from his skin. Do this for a few weeks, keep him on the same food. If he gets better, then that was the problem. If he gets worse, try changing his food one at a time, leave him on the new food for one week straight and see how he is doing. If he continues to worsen, take him back to the vet, he may have a skin condition requiring a prescription.
Question: Allergy????? I have a seasonal allergy although it does not persist for longer period of time but it causes me to sneeze, to cough and to wheeze a lot. Can anyone tell me what else can happen in allergies and what are the factors that can cause allergies??
Answer: Allergy is the body reaction to the foreign substance that comes in contact with the body through the surrounding environment and is mostly known as allergen. Basically, these are the factors that cause allergic reaction in your body and they include so many things like egg, milk, fruit, Soya, pollen, some drugs like penicillin, dust, smoke, flakes of pet skin and etc
Allergic response varies from person to person. It can be different for you and different for me and it also depends on the factor that is causing this response I usually suffer when I take seafood and what happens to me is shortness of breath, sneezing and diarrhea. And it subsides after some time I do not need to take any medicine for that. I hope this will help you, and still if you have any confusion related to allergies read the following article

Question: What is the best allergy medication to get? My boyfriend seems to have allergies all year long but he hates Benedryll because it makes him feel like he's high and sleep. Lately he's been having them really bad because of the warm weather with all the pollen in the air plus our cats are shedding and he's allergic to cats. We didn't know he was allergic until we got them and we're not getting rid of them now. He's is eventually going to go to a doctor about it but for now what is the best allergy medication? Claritin? Zyrtec? What?
Answer: Claritin is weaker than Zyrtec but less likely to cause drowsiness.
Zyrtec is about as strong as Benadryl and less likely to cause drowsiness than Benadryl, but it does make some ppl drowsy.
If Claritin is too weak and Zyrtec makes you drowsy, you will have to reduce your exposure or suffer until you get a prescription. Nasalcrom is OTC and useful for some ppl, but only if its used 4 times daily so this medication does not make sense for ppl who have allergies for many months of the year. It prevents but does not reverse allergy so you have to use it for a few weeks before you feel the difference, unless you start it before the exposure.
In the meantime consider using a Neil-Med sinus rinse, a HEPA vacuum, washing the cats (or cleaning them with Aller-pet) frequently, keeping the cats out of the bedroom. If you keep the windows closed to keep out the pollen (usually a good idea in spring) you will also trap in the cat allergens, so only do that if you also use a good air filter in your bedroom (like the 3m filtrete or honeywell---never use an air filter that makes ozone, please).
sounds like your bf is a perfect candidate for allergy shots. they are scientific and really work.
Question: Is there any allergy medicine i can take for animal and outdoor allergies? I love going to the farm but i am VERY allergic to most of the animals there (horses, cows, dogs, cats, etc.) I also am allergic to the plants like flowers and pollen. I want to spend a few months on a farm through wwoof, but i cant right now due to my allergies. my question is to know if there is any type of allergy shot that will last a while or will I have to take pills? Will these methods work on ALL of my allergies?
Answer: I would recommend Nasonex or Beconase AQ. You will need a prescription. Both are steroidal nasal sprays. It is recommended that you start the medication nearly a week before exposure, because the nasal spray can take up to five days to start working. In my experience, it works better than any antihistamines. Allergy shots can take up to five years to get the maximum benefits.
Question: What's the difference between an allergy and a reaction to something? Last night I had to take my little boy to the emergency room. The nurse asked if he had any allergies. I told her panadol makes him throw up. She said that's not an allergy, just a reaction.
Isn't an allergy just the bodies way of reacting to something that doesn't agree with it?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Answer: Allergy is an immune system response, an adverse drug reaction isn't. The consequences are so similar that the real world difference between the two is mostly just that avoiding a drug is a lot easier than avoiding all the usual traces of an allergen. (It isn't technically 'proper' to say 'drug allergy'; you should say 'adverse reaction' even though just this week I've been asked, again, by Dr.s, am I allergic to any drugs...)
Question: Natural Allergy treatment what has worked for you? It seems I am getting more and more seasonal allergies every year. My symptoms are getting to the point where no matter where I am, indoors or outdoors, I am getting dry coughing hacking attacks. Avoidance of my allergies is not an option anymore. My house is cleaned regularly, and we have air conditioning, so I have done what I can environmentally. I am trying also the netti pot which is not doing anything.
I have heard of allergy shots or taking raw honey, and I would like to know of any natural remedies or permanent solutions that anyone has tried.
Answer: I'm the same way. I also get really bad allergy eye, like i have now. My whole left eye is swollen to the point where I can't see!
Natural Allergy treatment is hard. I'd consider going somewhere and get over the counter medicine. You can get most for 3-6 Dollars. Don't get brand names. Get ones that are similar to brand names. (It should say on the box what allergy treatment it's similar too.)
Question: What to do if you have an allergy to fragrances, besides avoid them? I have an allergy to perfumes, colognes. I try to avoid going to stores where people are wearing them, but still have to leave my home. So many people wear tons of perfume and it makes me really sick. Is there such a thing as allergy shots I can get for a fragrance allergy ?
Answer: A problem with allergies is prolong exposure can make things worse. I'm not sure your case merits the use of immunotherapies. I know that seems harsh but without knowing the exact chemical in the perform which is causing the hypersensitive reaction, you can't really have a anti-allergy shot. If the problem is really bad, visit your personal physician and negotiate an allergy test. Investigating the actual ingredient is imperative. I tip could be to smear a layer of vaseline over the nostrils when you go out, it doesn't treat the reaction, but it does reduce the effects [for some people].
Good luck.
Question: What are good type of allergy medicines that work well? I've tried Claritin, Zyrtec, Singulair, and Xyzal. None of them worked except Xyzal, but apparently my medical coverage doesn't cover xyzal. Is there any other type of allergy medicines that are as well as xyzal?
Anyone know what allergy medicine Medi-Cal covers?
Answer: Zyrtec is a medication that consists of two molecules. It turns out that only one isomer (configuration of the same molecule) is active in blocking histamine (the chemical that causes bad allergy symptoms). They purified that isomer and concentrated it then marketed it as Xyzal.
Before I recommend anything, please check with your doctor before taking any medications or changing medications.
If Xyzal really worked for you, just try doubling your dose of Zyrtec.
If you want an alternative suggestion - allegra works well for some.
Question: Is an allergy to penicillin inheritable or genetically influenced? I've never really thought about it, but my grandmother has a penicillin allergy, my father (her son) has a penicillin allergy and I have a penicillin allergy. There's no history of it in my maternal family.
Answer: the answer is DON'T KNOW. Although there are loads of evidence in favour of it and contrary to it, none of them is conclusive. So, I am afraid, you will have to wait for some more years before any conclusive reply can be given. Until then, the answer is MAY BE.
Question: What foods should I avoid with my corn allergy? I have been having allergies to corn and tested positive on my allergy test. I also tested positive for grass. I am now having allergy symptoms when I eat oat meal and any other products that contain oats.
What other foods may be related to corn? I already have a 4 page list of corn and corn byproducts so I am looking for other foods in the corn/grass family.
Thanks for your help!
Answer: Hi. I suggest you visit the Yahoo Groups "foodallergynetwork". THere are a few ppl on there who are allergic to corn (I think one of them is named Donnie, I'm not sure.) but just join and post a message about needing info and they'll be glad to help you. I am gluten free, not corn free so I can't help you to much myself!
Best of luck, Amy
Question: How does someone develop an allergy to something? When do you develop an allergy? Is there a certain point in time where you develop them? What could determine what allergy you might have?
Thanks!
Answer: You are not necessarily "born" with allergies. Some allergies are "acquired" such as being allergic to penicillin after taking it many times. I have recently been diagnosed as being allergic to phenoxyethanol, an ingredient in cosmetics, and I realize I have been using several products over several years that have that as an ingredient. The same overexposure concept applies to food allergies also. You could have been eating strawberries all your life, then one day, suddenly, have a reaction. The immune system is what is causing this and you could find lots of info under that topic for more details.
Here's an excerpt from a site explaining allergic reactions for nail techs to watch for in their clients!
"Irritant Contact Dermatitis can develop after a short, heavy exposure or a repeated or prolonged low exposure to a substance. The appearance of irritant contact dermatitis varies considerably according to the conditions of exposure. For example, an accidental contact with a strong irritant causes immediate blisters. Contact with a mild irritant may only produce redness of the skin. However, if the irritation continues, small lesions or sores appear on the reddened area; afterward, crusts and scales form. The skin damage usually heals a few weeks after exposure ends if no complications have arisen (no infections occurred)."
And...I hope you never have any!!!
Question: How long does allergy medication take to start working, and how long does it last? If I take a generic, one-a-day allergy medicine, how long will it be before it starts working? How long until peak effectiveness, and after how many hours will the effect wear off.
Answer: Depends on the medicine.
The non-sedating antihistamines like Claritin and Zyrtec don't work at all if you only take the occasional one. You have to take them every day, and you don't notice that they are working until you've taken them for 3 or 4 days. If you take them every day, they are always at peak effectiveness - the medicine is maintained at the appropriate level in your body. If you are a very big person, you might need to adjust your dosages accordingly - like taking 3 of them every 2 days (about every 18 hours).
Benadryl starts work in about 30 minutes, and lasts 6-8 hours.
Read the package - there's lots of good info there.
Good luck!
Question: What is the difference between food allergy and food intolerance? I was diagnosed with a cashew nut allergy as a small child will I still be allergic? I've never tried the nut. Is there any way for completely curing the allergies?
Answer: A food allergy describes a reaction to food that is immune mediated - characteristic features are rash, difficulty breathing, eczema, swelling, itching - usually around the mouth and throat. Food intolerance describes a physical reaction to food that is not immune mediated - feaures may be similar to those of food allergy, and include vomiting, ulceration, abodminal pain, diarrhoea, bloating, and it is thought that some food intolerance may be associated with features such as arthritis, seizures, migraine etc.
One way of finding out if you're allergic to cashew nuts is to try and persuade your GP to do a RAST test for cashew nut protein. Some allergies can be cured by hyposensitisation, which involves desensitisation to the allergen by sequential administration of increasing doses of the offending substance. This should only be done in specialist clinics, and is not advised for life threatening allergy or peanut allergy.
Question: How long between allergy medication can I give a child cold medication? I gave my boyfriends son allergy medication and he also has a cold I wanted to know when I can give him cold mediation for his cold. He is 5 years old.
Answer: Call a pharmacist and tell them what medication you gave the child, they know way more about meds than the doctors do, thats what they went to school for.You dont want to give him too much medication and overdose him. Be carefull and call a professional first.
Question: What is the best type of allergy pill to take if you have severe allergies and you do shots? I have severely bad allergies.
I currently take Allegra 180mg but I still get symptoms.
Allergens: Most grasses, trees, cats, ragweed.
I take shots for my allergies every 3 weeks currently.
And if my allergies are irritated enough, I tend to go into something like an "allergy shock."
Answer: Ask about Clairitin.
Question: How can MSG allergy sufferers identify what contains MSG when it's not required to be listed as an ingredient? Most restaurants use MSG in their food preparation, but it's not noted on the menu, as peanut products are. It can even be listed generically as "natural flavorings" as an ingredient. My friend developed a sudden and severe allergy, and died an agonizing death from anaphylactic shock, because she specifically asked the person selling it, and he said it didn't (don't think he knew). Can't something be done?
Answer: i ate msg, make me fat. i have kind of a way to see where the glutamate is hiden.
1. if our heart keeps very fast when you smeel the food, probably has msg.
2.in case you acidentally eat msg, take some taurine suplement ( it worked in diabetics)
3. Avoid any processed food ( its the safest think to do)
4. There are 4 natural foods that have it naturally, that optional to avoid it but you feel much better if you dont eat them: corn, soy, diary and weast.
In restaurants, avoid chinese and in japanese eat without wasabi. Avoid any food in seasonings and french fries from restaurants, they usually put msg instead of salt on it.
i know that really hard to believe, but the big companies first think in money not in the clients heath...
Question: What kind of allergy would cause hot red blotches to the face and neck? I think one time he got it from cheese that had horseradish in it but we have yet to figure out what else causes it.
I believe he also has a different allergy to wine and or hard alcohol.
Nothing else usually happens to him other than the hot red blotches.
Answer: What your describing sounds like Hives! That is an allergic reaction to something. He best be tested for food allergies. In the meantime, take Benedril, it will help with the hives.
Question: What are the best cats for allergy sufferers? I have mild allergies, but love cats and have heard there are breeds that are better for allergy sufferers than others. Which are the best breeds for this?
I've heard Siberians and Maine Coons are good, THANKS!
Answer: Maine Coons? NFW, they have lots and lots of long hair. Look for rexes, as they have no undercoat and tight curly fur.
Some people (like me) are more allergic to exotic breeds like Abyssinians and Ragdolls.
And allergies do not automatically get worse over time. Your body can get accustomed to your own cat's allergens, and thus your allergies get better.
